Guide
The BYD Dolphin has a strong 5-star Euro NCAP rating, an industry-leading 8-year / 250,000 km battery warranty, and a 4.5/5 owner score in China across 4,000+ reviews. The core Blade Battery and electric drivetrain are consistently praised. The main concerns from Chinese owners — boot-lid corrosion, infotainment glitches, and weak highway range — are worth knowing, but the UK-spec Dolphin is a different (longer, heavier) body built to Euro NCAP standards. BYD's controversial September 2024 steering recall was China-only; the UK Dolphin launched post-fix in August 2025. Brand-level satisfaction in the UK remains a watch point: BYD ranked second from last in the 2025 Driver Power survey, though the 2026 survey shows significant improvement.
For a car that has been on UK roads less than a year, the BYD Dolphin's reliability picture is encouraging rather than alarming. The Blade Battery LFP chemistry is inherently more thermally stable than nickel-based rivals, the 5-star Euro NCAP rating is current (2023), and the warranty terms — 8 years / 250,000 km on the battery, 6 years / 150,000 km on the car — are among the best in class. The things to watch are lower-tier: software stability, boot-area corrosion on Chinese-spec cars, and BYD UK's still-evolving dealer network. Nothing in the current evidence suggests a structural powertrain problem.
On 15 January 2026 BYD extended the Blade Battery warranty across all European models to 8 years or 250,000 km (≈155,000 miles), up from 150,000 km previously. This extension applies retroactively to existing European owners as well as new purchases. The 70% minimum state-of-health (SOH) guarantee is written into the warranty, meaning BYD must repair or replace the battery if capacity falls below that threshold within the warranty period. The vehicle-level cover is 6 years / 150,000 km; the electric drive unit is also 8 years / 150,000 km. An anti-perforation warranty runs for 12 years with unlimited mileage. All cover transfers to a second owner, which matters for used-car buyers and residual values.
The BYD Dolphin has been on sale in China since August 2021 — four years of owner data against a UK market that only launched in August 2025. Autohome (汽车之家), China's largest owner-review platform, scores the Dolphin 4.50 out of 5 across 4,224 reviews, with 583 on the current 2025 model. Owners cite range adequacy, suspension comfort, and low maintenance costs as top positives. The most-mentioned complaint is boot space — too small for multi-passenger luggage — followed by wind noise at motorway speeds, and interior odour on new cars (typically dissipating within a week or two). On the 车质网 (China's official consumer complaints platform), the Dolphin records 31–33 complaints per 10,000 sales. The dominant complaint category in the 2025 model is body corrosion: rust appearing on A-pillars, door sills, and interior metal within relatively short ownership periods. Charging-port overheating, ADAS dropout, infotainment freezing, and inaccurate range estimates also appear. One critical caveat: the UK Dolphin is a different vehicle — around 200 mm longer, built to Euro NCAP crash standards. Whether the A-pillar blind spot complaint (a structural characteristic Chinese owners flag repeatedly) applies to the UK car is unconfirmed; check it yourself on a test drive.
In September 2024, BYD recalled approximately 96,714 Dolphin and Yuan Plus vehicles in China because a CEPS (electric power steering) controller could fail in a way that risked fire. Reuters and others covered this widely. The critical context for UK buyers: this was a China-only recall; the UK Dolphin did not go on sale until August 2025 — a full year after the fault was identified and corrected. There is no separate DVSA recall notice for the UK Dolphin as of July 2026, though buyers should check their own vehicle identification number via the DVSA recall checker before purchasing (especially used).
BYD's 2025 Auto Express Driver Power brand ranking was stark — second from bottom out of 31 brands, ahead of only MG. This is consistent with a brand in its first year of meaningful UK volume: small sample sizes, variable dealer experiences, and software-first products that feel rougher than their long-established rivals. The picture has improved: in the 2026 Driver Power survey BYD scored 84.69% overall, described by Auto Express as a significant improvement from its 2025 placing. UK Trustpilot reviews (430 ratings, 2.3/5) skew negative, as Trustpilot self-selects for dissatisfied customers, and the reviews cover all BYD products and dealership experiences — not the Dolphin specifically. The BYD Dolphin was named Best Small Electric Car in the Carbuyer Best Car Awards 2024, providing a more positive counterpoint from expert road testers.
The UK Dolphin is less than a year old at time of writing, so used stock is limited and largely ex-fleet or early private sales. When viewing, check these specifics: (1) Run the DVSA recall checker on the VIN — confirm no outstanding recall notices. (2) Look for corrosion on lower door sills and around the boot floor edge — the Chinese-spec car showed early rusting in these areas, and while UK spec differs, it is worth examining on a car that has seen a British winter. (3) Test the infotainment thoroughly — DiLink screen, CarPlay/Android Auto connection stability, climate controls. (4) Confirm the battery warranty extension to 250,000 km applies to the specific vehicle's registration (it should apply automatically to all European BYD cars, but get written confirmation from the selling dealer). (5) Check service history — BYD recommends annual service intervals.
