Comprehensive UK buyer's guide to the BYD Sealion 7 — specs, WLTP range, charging, practicality, running costs and a head-to-head verdict against the Tesla Model Y.
The BYD Sealion 7 is a five-seat, fully electric mid-size SUV that arrived in the UK in Q1 2025. It is the largest and most expensive model in BYD's UK line-up, positioned directly against the Tesla Model Y. BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the world's largest producer of new energy vehicles by volume — outselling Tesla on combined BEV and PHEV sales globally in 2024 — and has been present in the UK since 2022 via the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal and Seal U. The UK operation trades as BYD (U.K.) Co., Ltd (Company No. 08458577), registered in Denham, Uxbridge. BYD has demonstrated strong financial resilience and vertical integration: it manufactures its own Blade batteries, e-motors and semiconductors. The Sealion 7's UK launch was supported by a nationwide dealer network and BYD's own Autocharge-capable CCS charging compatibility. The car carries a six-year / 93,750-mile warranty plus an eight-year / 125,000-mile battery warranty — the most generous coverage in the segment. Three trim levels are offered: Comfort RWD, Design AWD and Excellence AWD.
Three variants are on sale in the UK. The entry-level Comfort RWD (82.5 kWh, single rear motor, 230 kW / 308 hp) is priced from £46,990 OTR. The mid-range Design AWD (82.5 kWh, dual motors, 390 kW / 523 hp) costs £51,990. The range-topping Excellence AWD (91.3 kWh, dual motors, 390 kW / 523 hp) is priced at £58,990. Note: initial pricing announced at launch (October 2024) was £44,990 / £49,290 / £57,290 — the figures above reflect confirmed OTR prices at time of writing (mid-2026) as reported by What Car?, The Independent and RAC Drive. All versions include a comprehensive standard equipment list: heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 12-speaker Dynaudio audio, 360° cameras, adaptive cruise control, V2L and heat pump. Design adds 20-inch alloys; Excellence adds real Nappa leather seats and a head-up display. Discounts of £3,000–£5,000 are routinely available through brokers such as Carwow.
Official WLTP combined ranges are: Comfort RWD 300 miles, Design AWD 283 miles, Excellence AWD 312 miles. These are WLTP figures only and should not be compared directly with CLTC ranges (which are typically 20–25% higher). EV Database estimates the Comfort RWD's real-world range at approximately 260 miles in mixed conditions — around 235 miles at a steady 70 mph motorway cruise in mild weather, dropping to roughly 185 miles in cold weather (-10 °C). What Car? found a real-world range of approximately 249 miles in 20 °C ambient temperatures. EVGuide.uk estimates motorway range at around 204 miles for the Comfort. For context, the Tesla Model Y RWD (WLTP 314 miles) achieves around 251 miles motorway real-world on the same methodology. The Sealion 7 uses BYD's Blade LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery chemistry, integrated into the vehicle's structure via Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology. LFP chemistry supports daily 100% charging without significant degradation — an advantage over NMC rivals — but delivers lower energy density, which explains why the large 82.5 kWh battery yields only 300 miles WLTP.
All Sealion 7s use a CCS2 DC port and Type 2 AC port, both located on the right rear. AC charging is 11 kW (three-phase) on all variants — typical UK home wallboxes deliver 7.4 kW single-phase, giving a full charge in around 13 hours 15 minutes. This is limited compared to rivals that offer 22 kW AC. DC rapid-charging capability differs by trim: Comfort and Design carry an 82.5 kWh battery that peaks at 150 kW DC, delivering a 10–80% charge in around 32 minutes. The Excellence AWD's larger 91.3 kWh battery peaks at 230 kW DC, enabling a 10–80% top-up in approximately 24 minutes — comparable to the Tesla Model Y Long Range. Note: real-world peak charging on the Excellence has been reported by some owners at 100–140 kW rather than the full 230 kW claim, depending on charger capability and battery temperature. Battery preconditioning via navigation is not automatic, which can affect rapid-charge performance in cold weather. V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) is standard on all trims, exporting up to 3.3 kW AC via a Type 2 adaptor — useful for camping or emergency power. The Sealion 7 does not support V2G or V2H.
The Sealion 7 is a large car by class standards — 4,830 mm long, 1,925 mm wide (mirrors folded), 1,620 mm tall, on a 2,930 mm wheelbase. This puts it fractionally longer than the Tesla Model Y (4,794 mm) but narrower with mirrors folded (a useful advantage in multi-storey car parks). The boot offers 520 litres with seats up, expanding to 1,789 litres with seats folded in a 60:40 split — useful, though the Model Y's hatchback design delivers 854 litres seats up and 2,118 litres folded. The frunk adds a further 58 litres (enough for charging cables and a carry-on bag). What Car? confirmed eight carry-on suitcases fit in the combined storage, versus ten in the Model Y. The rear bench is flat, accommodating three adults comfortably; rear seat backs recline manually but do not slide. Rear headroom is slightly squeezed by the coupé roofline but sufficient for a six-footer. The 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen is the cabin's centrepiece — it rotates between landscape and portrait via touch or voice. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and (on Excellence) a head-up display complete the driver information suite. BYD's DiPilot 10 ADAS suite is standard: it includes AEB, lane keep assist, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise, rear cross-traffic alert and 360° cameras. OTA software updates are supported. Cabin quality is broadly praised — plush door cards, quilted faux leather (real Nappa on Excellence), 128-colour ambient lighting, Dynaudio 12-speaker audio — though some reviewers note harder plastics lower down and a steering wheel angled slightly away from drivers.
As a zero-emission car registered from April 2025, the Sealion 7 pays £10 VED in year one, then £200 standard rate per year from year two. All three trims exceed the £40,000 list-price threshold, triggering the Expensive Car Supplement (ECS) of £620 per year for years 2–6 of ownership (total £730/year in years 2–6). However, from April 2026 the ECS threshold rose to £50,000 — meaning the Comfort (£46,990) and Design (£51,990) straddle the new boundary: the Comfort avoids the ECS from April 2026, while the Design and Excellence still attract it. For Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) purposes, all EVs sit at 3% for 2025–26 and 4% for 2026–27. At the Comfort's P11D of approximately £46,935: a 20% taxpayer pays ~£23/month (2025–26) or ~£31/month (2026–27); a 40% taxpayer pays ~£47/month or ~£63/month respectively — highly competitive versus petrol equivalents. This makes the Sealion 7 a strong salary-sacrifice proposition, with some employees seeing all-in costs around £600–£940/month gross depending on scheme terms. Insurance sits in group 45 (Comfort), 47 (Design) and 49 (Excellence) — on a par with the Tesla Model Y but higher than Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
UK-specific reliability data for the Sealion 7 is limited given it launched only in Q1 2025. No BYD model has yet featured in What Car?'s Reliability Survey with a statistically significant sample. UK press reviews have not reported significant quality complaints during test drives, but owners on UK Facebook groups have noted some software quirks (primarily around CarPlay takeover of the screen and lane-keeping sensitivity). For a broader perspective, the Sealion 7's Chinese equivalent — the BYD Hǎi Shī 07 EV (海狮 07 EV) — has been on sale in China since 2024 on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture. Chinese owner reviews on Autohome (汽车之家) and Sohu Auto highlight strong powertrain satisfaction, smooth acceleration, and quiet cabin as key positives. China owners note the car scores above 74% of same-class rivals overall, with range performance scoring above 84% of peers. Reported niggles from China owners include: occasional touchscreen freezes, some body creak on rough roads, and battery pre-conditioning requiring manual activation (no automatic navigation-triggered pre-conditioning). No significant mechanical faults or battery fire incidents related to the Blade battery have been reported in either the UK or China press for this model. The structural Blade battery has passed BYD's nail-penetration test and Euro NCAP's battery safety protocols. BYD's 6+8 warranty structure provides meaningful protection against early failures.
The Tesla Model Y is the Sealion 7's clearest benchmark. At a glance, the Comfort (£46,990) costs roughly £5,000 more than the Tesla Model Y RWD (approximately £41,990). For that premium, the BYD offers more interior kit as standard (HUD on Excellence, Dynaudio audio, V2L, heat pump, rear seat heating) but trails on boot space (520 L vs 854 L), efficiency (317 Wh/mile vs ~255 Wh/mile estimated), charging network (no dedicated Supercharger equivalent) and estimated real-world motorway range (~204 miles vs ~251 miles). The Sealion 7's cabin receives strong praise for perceived quality and a higher SUV driving position; most reviewers find it more comfortable at low speeds than the Model Y, but less engaging dynamically and no better (sometimes worse) on motorways. The rotating touchscreen is a differentiator, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are wireless and standard — neither of which the Model Y offers. For salary-sacrifice and company-car drivers, both cars share the same 4% BiK rate (2026–27), so the lower P11D of the Model Y translates to modestly lower monthly company-car tax. On resale value, Tesla's brand recognition currently gives the Model Y an advantage in the used market. EVGuide.uk's composite scoring awards the Model Y a clear overall lead on value, motorway range, family practicality and charging, with the Sealion 7 ahead only on city narrowness and towing capability (750 kg braked vs zero for the Model Y).
The BYD Sealion 7 is a genuinely capable, well-equipped and premium-feeling electric SUV — but its value proposition is complicated by pricing that sits above the Tesla Model Y. It scores strongly on standard equipment depth, cabin ambience, V2L capability, warranty length and Blade battery safety. It trails on boot space, charging infrastructure (no Supercharger equivalent), motorway efficiency, and — for now — brand recognition and resale value in the UK. The Sealion 7 is best suited to: buyers who want a classy, tech-rich interior with V2L; families doing shorter daily commutes where 250–300 real-world miles is sufficient; company-car and salary-sacrifice drivers benefiting from the 4% BiK rate; and buyers who prioritise outright purchase value over financed monthly costs (PCP deals for the Sealion 7 are notably more expensive than equivalent Model Y deals). Avoid if: you regularly drive 300+ motorway miles in a session (range anxiety is real at highway speeds); you rely on rapid-charging and need consistency above 150 kW across all trips; or you are buying on PCP where the Model Y's lower list price and strong residual values make it significantly cheaper per month. The overall risk classification is LOW: the Sealion 7 is built by the world's largest NEV manufacturer, carries strong warranty cover, uses a well-proven battery chemistry, has passed Euro NCAP five-star testing, and is backed by a growing UK dealer network.
