The car is not yet Euro NCAP-tested and carries four years of vehicle warranty rather than the six years offered by BYD on comparable models. China owner intelligence is broadly positive (Autohome 4.55/5.0, 车质网 83/100 quality score), with small boot and frameless-door wind noise the top complaints in both markets.
The Leapmotor B05 is a genuine achievement: a rear-wheel-drive electric hatchback with 300 miles of WLTP range, 174 kW DC rapid charging, a heat pump, Apple CarPlay, 12-speaker audio, V2L and a panoramic roof — all included for £28,995 OTR (after the manufacturer's own £1,500 LEAP-GRANT discount, valid to 30 September 2026). At that price it undercuts the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born and Renault Mégane E-Tech while matching or exceeding their standard equipment.
Every UK first-drive review published to date praised the value proposition and flagged the same single issue: the lane-keep assist and driver monitoring systems are hyperactive, near-impossible to disable through the touchscreen menus, and will re-enable themselves without input. Car Magazine called it a 'wrestling match' on tight roads; The Car Expert rated the driver aids 'among the poorest implementations in the UK market.' The intrusive software is not a minor irritant — it actively makes the car less safe on typical British B-roads. Leapmotor has promised an OTA fix, but as of the July 2026 first deliveries, no confirmed UK software update had resolved the issue.
The B05 is not yet Euro NCAP-tested, carries a four-year vehicle warranty (versus BYD's industry-leading six years), and has a small 345-litre boot. These are real trade-offs at the price point, not dealbreakers. The car is recommended with a firm caveat: confirm the ADAS OTA update has been applied before taking delivery.

For a buyer weighing the risk of a Chinese entrant, this structure is meaningfully different from a standalone brand with no European footprint.
Leapmotor (零跑, HKEX: 9863) is a Hangzhou-based EV startup founded in 2015. It sold 596,555 vehicles globally in 2025 — a 103% year-on-year increase — and posted its first-ever semi-annual profit in H1 2025. In December 2025, FAW Group (a Chinese state-owned automaker) paid approximately USD 530 million for a 5% stake, adding further institutional backing. Production of B05 and B10 technology at Stellantis's Zaragoza plant in Spain was announced as an intention in May 2026, pending definitive agreements — this would reduce EU import tariff exposure and demonstrate deeper European commitment.
The one unresolved risk is Stellantis itself, which reported a USD 26.3 billion net loss for full-year 2025. Stellantis has identified the Leapmotor partnership as a strategic highlight, and LPMI's European sales remain one of the few growth lines in an otherwise difficult year. The brand-survival risk for UK B05 buyers is assessed as low-to-medium — well below the risk profile of a standalone Chinese entrant.
The B05 comes in a single variant in the UK: one battery, one motor, one trim, one price. The 67.1 kWh LFP battery (Leapmotor's stated usable figure; EV Database estimates ~65.0 kWh true usable) is integrated into the floor using Leapmotor's CTC 2.0+ cell-to-chassis architecture, which stiffens the body and recovers interior space. Chemistry is LFP — lithium iron phosphate — meaning the battery can be charged to 100% daily without meaningful degradation, but energy density is lower than NMC, which contributes to the car's weight of around 1,837 kg.
The official WLTP range is 300 miles. UK press estimates for real-world range in mild conditions sit at 250–275 miles, with cold-weather figures around 200 miles per EV Database modelling. The single rear-mounted motor produces 160 kW (218 PS), driving through the rear wheels — an unusual layout in this class, and one that gives the B05 a more natural, balanced driving character than the typical front-wheel-drive electric hatchback. Zero to 62 mph takes 6.7 seconds with launch control engaged; top speed is 106 mph.
DC charging peaks at 174 kW (CCS Combo 2). Leapmotor claims 30–80% in 17 minutes; What Car? independently timed approximately 24 minutes for 10–80%, which aligns with EV Database's published charging curve. AC charging is 11 kW three-phase via Type 2, completing a 30–80% top-up in around three and a half hours on a home wallbox. V2L (vehicle-to-load) is standard, providing 3.3 kW AC output via a Type 2 adapter — useful for camping or powering tools. V2H and V2G are not supported.
The B05's chassis was tuned at Alfa Romeo's Balocco test facility in Italy by Stellantis engineers, and the results show. Front McPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension deliver a neutral, balanced character that most reviewers praised as better than expected for a sub-£30,000 electric car. Body roll is well-controlled. Cornering is predictable if unenthusiastic — this is not a car that rewards being pressed on a B-road, but it handles tidily and feels more composed than the front-wheel-drive B10 and C10 siblings.
Steering is very light in Comfort mode — acceptable at city speeds but disconnected on faster roads. Sport mode adds helpful weight and can be locked into one of eight driver profiles. Ride quality prompted different verdicts from testers: Electrifying.com and Motoring Research praised a smooth motorway gait; What Car? described the ride as 'fidgety' over town imperfections and 'thumping' over larger bumps. All agree motorway refinement is impressive, with minimal wind and tyre noise at legal speeds.
The one unambiguous failing is the driver assistance stack. Lane-keep assist is calibrated so aggressively that it actively steers against the driver's inputs on lanes with visible road markings. Disabling it requires navigating multiple touchscreen menus, and it re-enables itself without intervention. Car Magazine described the experience as a 'wrestling match'; The Car Expert rated it among the worst ADAS implementations currently sold in the UK. This is the same complaint levelled at the T03 and C10 — Leapmotor has promised an OTA update, but as of the first UK deliveries in late July 2026, no published confirmation of a fix has been noted by any major UK outlet.

The B05 comes with everything included in a single trim — no options beyond colour (metallic adds £575) and interior choice. The standard equipment list is genuinely comprehensive for the price: 14.6-inch 2.5K infotainment touchscreen, 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 50W wireless phone charging, 12-speaker audio, panoramic sunroof (fixed glass, electric sunshade), dual-zone climate control with heat pump, heated front seats (6-way electric driver, 4-way passenger), heated steering wheel, 19-inch aero alloy wheels, 360-degree cameras, keyless entry, frameless doors and V2L.
The heat pump is worth highlighting: it is standard on all UK cars, meaning cold-weather efficiency is meaningfully better than a car with resistive-only heating. V2L at 3.3 kW — enough to power a kettle, laptop and lighting simultaneously — is becoming expected in this class but is included here at a price where many rivals still charge extra.
The touchscreen interface is the weak point. Almost every control — including climate temperature, mirror adjustment and ADAS settings — routes through the screen, which requires multiple taps to reach. The screen is sharp and responsive, but the software layout squeezes functional buttons into the lower third, leaving much of the display as wallpaper. Reviewers from What Car? and The Car Expert flagged the icon size and menu logic as frustrating on the move.
Practicality is a mixed picture. Rear legroom is genuinely generous — a 6'3" tester from Car Magazine confirmed they could sit comfortably behind themselves. However, the fixed panoramic roof eats into headroom for passengers over six feet tall, and the boot at 345 litres is the smallest in its competitive set: less than the MG4 (363 litres), Cupra Born (385 litres) or Renault Mégane E-Tech (440 litres). There is no frunk, no underfloor storage, and no ski hatch. The frameless doors, while distinctive, generate noticeable wind noise above 55 mph — the second-most-common complaint in Chinese owner reviews after the small boot.
The B05 is not yet Euro NCAP-tested as of July 2026. No official result published as of July 2026. Leapmotor International stated that testing was complete and a five-star result was expected (CarExpert, Jun 2026) — but this is unconfirmed until Euro NCAP publishes. The vehicle warranty is four years / 60,000 miles. The battery is covered for eight years / 100,000 miles. Both are industry-standard figures; Leapmotor's T03, B10 and C10 carry the same terms. By comparison, BYD offers six years / 93,750 miles on the vehicle across its UK range — a meaningful gap for fleet buyers calculating residual risk. The Leapmotor/Stellantis dealer network covers warranty claims, which reduces the risk of a Chinese-brand warranty being difficult to enforce.
In China the B05 is sold as the Lafa 5 (零跑 Lafa 5 — styled after Lifestyle, Attitude, Freedom, Art). It launched on 28 November 2025 and accumulated approximately 9,700 China sales in the final weeks of the year, with 5,960 sold in Q1 2026. It is not a volume leader in China — Leapmotor's higher-volume domestic cars are the B10 SUV and the C10 — but owner feedback from a relatively early pool of reviewers is a useful leading indicator for the UK car.
Autohome owner score (口碑评分): 4.55 out of 5.0 from 125 reviews as of early July 2026, ranked joint first in its competitive set alongside the Geely Xing Yuan. The most-praised attributes by mention count: powerful acceleration (46 mentions), interior material quality (45 mentions), precise steering (34 mentions), and DC charging speed (15 mentions). The most-criticised: small boot — 29 mentions — and wind noise from frameless doors — 28 mentions. These match the top concerns raised by UK press.
车质网 new-car quality survey (104 questionnaires, May 2026) gave an overall satisfaction score of 83 out of 100, ranking joint second among 2026 model-year cars. Quality reliability satisfaction came in at 70% satisfied or very satisfied. The primary quality complaint category was body accessories and electrical systems; the primary service complaint was difficulty recovering pre-order deposits. No recalls have been issued for the Lafa 5 in Chinese mainland as of July 2026.
The most significant divergence between the China and UK versions is the autonomous-driving hardware. Chinese Max and Ultra trims include a roof-mounted solid-state LiDAR enabling city navigation on autopilot (城市领航辅助) and 27-sensor ADAS suite. The UK B05 has no LiDAR, 14 sensors only, and 21 ADAS functions at Level 2 maximum. The UK also lacks the China-spec DeepSeek AI voice assistant and 5G connectivity. The B05's P11D value for company car purposes is £30,430. At the 2026/27 BiK rate of 4% for zero-emission cars, this means company car tax of approximately £1,217 per year for a 40% taxpayer — making it one of the cheapest ways to put a C-segment electric hatchback on a company car or salary sacrifice scheme. This is particularly competitive against the Renault Mégane E-Tech and Volkswagen ID.3, which sit in higher price brackets.
Insurance group data has not been assigned as of July 2026. Road tax (VED) for zero-emission cars registered after 1 April 2025 follows the new UK rates: £10 in year one, then the standard £195 from year two. Cars with a list price over £40,000 attract the Expensive Car Supplement (currently £620 per year for years two through six); the B05 at £30,495 list price does not trigger this — a meaningful saving over rivals priced above that threshold.

The B05 makes most sense for buyers who prioritise value, specification and range over driving excitement, who charge primarily at home, and who can confirm — before collection — that Leapmotor's ADAS OTA update has been applied to their specific vehicle and tested on a local road with lane markings.
It is a particularly strong candidate for salary sacrifice and company car schemes: at a P11D of £30,430 and 4% BiK, the annual tax saving versus a comparable petrol or diesel is substantial. Private buyers in the market for a Cupra Born or MG4 Long Range should cross-shop the B05 seriously — it undercuts both on price while matching them on range and outgunning the Born on included standard kit.
Buyers who primarily need rear-seat headroom for adults over six feet tall, who regularly drive in wet and dirty conditions (where the missing rear wiper becomes a daily annoyance), or who need a large boot for family loads should consider the MG4 Extended Range, Cupra Born 79 kWh, or — if budget allows — the BYD Seal or BYD Sealion 7.
The B05 is explicitly not for buyers who want the full autonomous driving capability that the Chinese version's LiDAR Max trim delivers. The UK car is Level 2 only.
Buyers who want more driver engagement should note: Leapmotor bosses are seriously considering bringing the B05 Ultra (additional power, uprated brakes, stiffer suspension, sportier seats) to Europe. No UK confirmation or date has been given as of July 2026, but it is worth noting if you are tempted by the B05 concept but want more performance (Top Gear, Jun 2026).
