SAIC's MG4 rewrote affordable EV value in Britain, yet its reliability record demands scrutiny. Complete verdict for UK buyers.
The MG4 is built by SAIC Motor Corporation — one of China's largest state-owned automotive enterprises, headquartered in Shanghai. SAIC acquired the MG marque and Longbridge site from the collapsed MG Rover Group in 2007, reinventing MG as a global electric-car brand while retaining a design and engineering centre in Birmingham. In the UK, MG has sold new cars since 2011; annual registrations climbed from roughly 3,100 in 2015 to more than 85,000 in 2025, establishing it as the best-selling Chinese automotive brand in Britain. The franchise network now covers over 120 authorised dealerships across the UK — adequate coverage for most owners but smaller than established European marques. SAIC is financially robust and carries the implicit backing of the Chinese state, providing structural stability. Prospective buyers should nonetheless monitor evolving UK policy on Chinese EV import tariffs and data-security regulation, both of which could affect the brand's long-term position in Britain.
The 2026 facelift rationalised the MG4 range significantly. The entry-level SE Standard Range has been discontinued, its price point filled instead by the separate MG4 Urban model. Three variants now form the core MG4 range as of mid-2026. The Premium Long Range (64 kWh LFP battery, 280 miles WLTP, rear-wheel drive) is priced at £29,995 OTR — a cut of over £2,000 on the outgoing Trophy Long Range it replaces. The Premium Extended Range (77 kWh NMC battery, 338 miles WLTP, RWD) costs £32,995. The XPower AWD (64 kWh NMC, dual-motor, 435 PS, 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds, 251 miles WLTP) commands £33,995 — exceptional performance value. All models are equipped as standard with heated front seats and steering wheel, 12.8-inch HD touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 360° HD parking camera, vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, and climate control. MG routinely offers factory deposit contributions and interest-free PCP deals; salary-sacrifice users can access the Long Range for monthly payments well below those of comparable European EVs. P11D values closely mirror OTR prices for BiK calculation purposes.
On official WLTP combined figures, the MG4's range is compelling for its price: 280 miles (Premium Long Range), 338 miles (Premium Extended Range) and 251 miles (XPower). These are WLTP certified figures measured under standardised European conditions — not the Chinese CLTC protocol. CLTC figures, used in domestic Chinese marketing for the equivalent MG Mulan, run substantially higher and are not directly comparable with WLTP; buyers should ignore any CLTC claims when assessing UK real-world expectations. In independent UK tests, the Extended Range achieved approximately 3.9 mi/kWh in mixed wintry non-motorway conditions (Top Gear), equating to roughly 290 miles — close to its WLTP claim. Carwow independently recorded ~3.9 mi/kWh on the Long Range in testing, projecting approximately 250 real-world miles. Electrifying.com quotes a real-world band of 190-300 miles across the range depending on conditions. The XPower's range degrades rapidly under performance driving; forum owners have reported as little as 170 miles at sustained UK motorway speeds. In cold weather, the NMC-battery Extended Range and XPower are noticeably affected; the 2026 Long Range's LFP chemistry is less temperature-sensitive but charges more linearly, without the fast top-end fill of NMC. The absence of a heat pump — standard on rival VW ID.3 and Kia EV4 — contributes to winter range reduction.
All 2026 MG4 models use CCS (Combined Charging System) for DC rapid charging — the dominant UK and European standard, compatible with the vast majority of public chargers including Gridserve, bp pulse, Osprey, Pod Point, and Tesla Superchargers (open to non-Tesla EVs via the Magic Dock network). The Long Range model's 2026 LFP battery supports up to 154 kW peak DC, enabling a 10-80% charge in approximately 25-30 minutes at a suitably powerful rapid charger. The Extended Range and XPower peak at roughly 140 kW, taking about 40 minutes for 10-80%. A rough rule of thumb across all models: 100 miles of additional range in approximately 15 minutes on a 150 kW charger. AC onboard charging is 11 kW (three-phase Type 2) on all 2026 variants, meaning an overnight full charge from a 7 kW home wallbox takes approximately 8-9 hours. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) is standard on all models, allowing the car to power external devices from the high-voltage battery at up to 3.3 kW — useful on a building site or at a campsite. The MG4 does not include a heat pump as standard or as an option; rivals such as the VW ID.3 and Kia EV4 offer this technology, improving cold-weather range and charging efficiency. Owner reports across the UK describe occasional failures for rapid-charge sessions to initialise at public charge points — a software or compatibility issue rather than a hardware fault, but one that has affected enough owners to warrant mention.
The 2026 facelift substantially upgraded the MG4's cabin technology. Every model receives a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen (replacing the original 10.25-inch unit), a 10.25-inch digital driver display, physical climate-control buttons below the screen (a direct response to persistent owner criticism), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in-built satellite navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and a 360° HD parking camera with transparent-chassis mode for tight-parking manoeuvres. MG Pilot — MG's collective ADAS suite — is standard across the range and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, active emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, lane-keep assist, driver attention alert, intelligent high-beam control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The system earned a 5-star Euro NCAP rating when tested in 2022, though the test has since become more stringent. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates were a material gap in early MG4 generations, requiring dealer visits for all firmware changes — a shortcoming compared with BYD and Tesla. MG confirmed OTA capability was being progressively rolled out to MG4 models from late 2025, though the update remains a work-in-progress rather than a fully established feature. The Chinese-market MG Mulan (the direct domestic equivalent) features additional camera-based intelligent-driving modes that have not been confirmed for UK specification; UK buyers receive a slightly stripped-back ADAS palette relative to the domestic version.
Reliability is the MG4's most significant weakness and must be weighed carefully by UK buyers. In the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, the MG4 ranked 18th out of 20 EVs with a score of 76.1%. In 2024 it fell further — last out of 18 EVs at just 63.8%, substantially below the class average. The 2025 survey showed marginal improvement for the MG4 itself (12th of 19 EVs), but the MG brand as a whole finished last of 30 brands assessed — now two consecutive years at the bottom. Carwow's Driver Power survey independently corroborates this picture. The most frequently reported fault categories are: non-motor electrical issues (15% of affected cars), interior trim (9%), bodywork (7%), motor problems (7%), and infotainment/sat-nav glitches (7%). Battery and charging-system faults account for 4% of reports. When a fault occurs, 68% of affected vehicles spend more than a week off the road, and 39% of repair bills exceed £1,000 even within the warranty period — MG covers costs in only 55% of warranty cases according to survey data. Recurring owner-reported issues include: infotainment freezing and Apple CarPlay connectivity failures requiring a software update; rattling from interior trim, dashboard panels and door cards; frozen charging-port flaps in sub-zero temperatures (a confirmed recurring issue across multiple UK winters); and public rapid-charge sessions failing to initialise. The 2022 recall covered a locking-system fault affecting approximately 1,960 cars and should have been resolved on all affected vehicles. China owner voice: published owner reports for the domestic MG Mulan equivalent on Chinese automotive platforms echo the same fault themes — software freezes, charging-port reliability, and interior panel rattles — suggesting these issues are systemic to the platform rather than specific to UK market assembly or configuration.
Despite its Chinese origins, the MG4 slots neatly into UK tax structures that advantage zero-emission cars. Vehicle Excise Duty (VED): new electric cars registered from 1 April 2025 pay £10 in the first year, then £195 per year from year two at the standard rate. All MG4 variants are priced below £40,000 and therefore escape the luxury-car VED supplement (an additional £425/year on cars above that threshold). Benefit-in-Kind (BiK): for the 2025/26 tax year, the zero-emission company-car rate is 3% of P11D value, rising incrementally to 4% in 2026/27 and 5% in 2027/28 per HMRC's published roadmap. At a £29,995 P11D, a 40% taxpayer pays approximately £360 per year in BiK tax — a fraction of equivalent petrol or diesel. Salary-sacrifice schemes can cut effective monthly costs further still, making the MG4 one of the most cost-efficient salary-sacrifice choices in the market. Insurance groups range from 27-29 for the Long Range, 33 for the Extended Range, and 40 for the XPower — broadly comparable to a Volkswagen ID.3 (groups 24-34). Servicing is due annually or every 15,000 miles; MG offers prepaid multi-year service plans covering periodic maintenance and 12-months' AA roadside assistance. Depreciation is reasonable: industry data suggests approximately 44% value retention after 3 years and 36,000 miles. Tyres are standard-profile sizes (215/55 R17 on Long Range; 235/45 R18 on Extended Range and XPower) widely available at competitive aftermarket prices.
The MG4 remains the strongest price-to-specification proposition in the UK electric-hatchback class. The Premium Long Range at £29,995 delivers 280 miles WLTP, genuine rear-wheel-drive handling dynamics, comprehensive ADAS, and a class-leading 7-year warranty — at a price that undercuts the VW ID.3 by several thousand pounds and the Kia EV4 by a wider margin still. The 2026 facelift meaningfully improved the interior and infotainment, removing the most common day-to-day irritants. Buy it if: you are a private buyer or salary-sacrifice user who prioritises range and value per pound; you primarily use the car for urban and suburban commuting where real-world range shortfalls and occasional charging faults matter less; you have home-charging capability to avoid reliance on public rapid chargers; and you are comfortable using the 7-year warranty as your primary risk-mitigation tool. Do not buy it if: you depend on the car for business-critical daily transport and cannot tolerate extended off-road repair periods; you regularly make long motorway journeys requiring reliable public rapid charging; or interior quality and build-finish parity with European rivals are non-negotiable. Versus BYD Atto 3: the Atto 3 offers a better-quality interior, LFP Blade battery chemistry with superior thermal stability, and arguably more mature software. The MG4 wins on driving dynamics, range (Extended Range's 338 miles vs Atto 3's approximately 260 miles), and price. Versus VW ID.3: the ID.3 costs several thousand pounds more, has a substantially stronger reliability record, smoother Travel Assist lane-centring, and a more refined motorway ride. The MG4 is more engaging on a B-road and better value; for company-car drivers the similar BiK rate narrows the monthly cost gap considerably.
