Omoda E5 Reliability — What UK Buyers Need to Know

The Omoda E5 is the UK's best-selling salary-sacrifice electric car — and one of the most visible Chinese EVs on British roads. That makes the reliability question unavoidable. The honest answer is this: the E5 is too new to have hard long-term data, its core powertrain has a strong battery pedigree behind it, and there are specific, documented issues every buyer should know about before signing. Here is the full picture.

The car only arrived in the UK in summer 2024. At the time of writing — mid-2026 — the oldest UK examples are less than two years old. No major British reliability survey (Auto Express Driver Power, What Car? Reliability Survey) has yet accumulated enough owner responses to score the model. That absence of data is neutral, not negative. The same was true of every new entrant before sample sizes matured.

The safety recall every buyer must check

There is one official DVSA recall affecting the Omoda E5, and it is safety-critical.

In February 2026, DVSA issued recall R/2026/013 covering 2025-model-year Omoda E5s. The fault: the driveshaft nut was improperly locked during assembly at the factory. In the worst case, it can loosen in service, producing wheel vibration and abnormal noise, and — if ignored — potential drive system failure and loss of vehicle control. The fix is a free dealer inspection and re-torquing or replacement of the nut.

This is a straightforward assembly quality-control failure, not a design flaw. Chery is by no means unique in issuing an early-life recall on a new model. The important point for buyers is to verify the recall has been completed on any specific vehicle before purchase. Use the government's free recall checker at gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall with the car's VIN or registration number. Any E5 that has been through a franchised Omoda dealer after February 2026 should have had this addressed.

For context: a petrol Omoda 5 rear-axle weld failure recall in 2024 and a Jaecoo 7 wiring recall in January 2026 are unrelated to the E5 and involve different platform components. The E5's suspension design differs from the petrol Omoda 5.

The 12V battery and electrical shutdown reports

The most serious unresolved reliability concern with the Omoda E5 involves the 12V auxiliary battery system — the small battery that powers door locks, the computer, and safety systems when the main drive battery is not delivering power.

Multiple UK owners have reported complete electrical shutdowns, typically described as "Severe Battery Failure" or "Severe Vehicle Failure" messages appearing on the dashboard, followed by the gear selector and steering becoming unresponsive. In the most alarming incident — documented on Reddit in May 2025 — a brand-new E5 (delivered 30 April 2025) suffered two breakdowns in its first two weeks of ownership. The first, while reversing, caused twelve simultaneous warning lights, locked the steering, and eventually left the car blocking an emergency vehicle's path. After a jump-start, all error logs were cleared — meaning the dealer subsequently found no faults to diagnose.

This diagnostic-erasure problem is the compounding issue. Jump-starting an EV resets the 12V system and wipes the fault record, leaving dealers with nothing to investigate. A cycle of "no fault found" and repeat breakdown has been reported by multiple owners.

A further pattern: key fob batteries draining quickly (reported April 2025), suspected to be caused by proximity sensors continually waking the 12V system when the car is parked nearby.

Omoda has not issued an OTA fix or recall specifically for 12V charging behaviour at the time of writing. The August 2025 model update addressed suspension and braking but not this issue. If you buy an Omoda E5, request the latest available software version at delivery, and monitor 12V battery behaviour closely in the first few months.

Software and infotainment — the known weaknesses

Every professional UK reviewer has flagged the infotainment system. This is not a reliability fault in the traditional sense — the car drives and charges reliably — but it is a consistent quality shortfall that affects the daily ownership experience.

Electrifying.com called the tech "bad enough to put us off the car entirely." Carwow rated it 6/10, noting menus that are "confusing" and buttons too small to operate safely while driving. The 360-degree camera activates on indicator use and takes several seconds to clear — repeatedly described as a distraction at junctions. The voice assistant works inconsistently; at a September 2025 VIP event, it failed to correctly process a basic heating command in a live demonstration.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections reset randomly, requiring re-pairing mid-journey. Multiple UK owners have described this as a widespread issue. The driver assistance system settings — lane keep assist in particular — reset to their default (active) state every time the car is started, meaning owners who prefer to drive without assistance must disable them manually on every journey.

Omoda released a comprehensive model update in August 2025, less than a year after UK launch — unusually rapid for an established brand, and a candid acknowledgement that feedback had identified real problems. The update revised braking feel, suspension tuning, added 10 miles of range, and increased DC charging from 80kW to 130kW. Whether it addressed the CarPlay reset and ADAS default behaviour has not been independently confirmed.

Post-update cars — identifiable by checking build date and specification sheet — should be meaningfully improved on braking and ride quality. The software immaturity, however, reflects a wider pattern across Chinese EV brands entering a UK market where over-the-air infrastructure and localisation take time to mature.

The warranty — strong on headline, nuanced in detail

Omoda's warranty is the clearest selling point the brand has, and it is genuinely competitive. The full terms, confirmed from Omoda UK's official warranty policy:

- 7 years or 100,000 miles bumper-to-bumper (private use) - 8 years or 100,000 miles for the high-voltage battery pack (to 70% capacity) - 12 years anti-perforation for body panels

This matches Kia, equals or exceeds MG, and substantially outpaces the European standard of three years.

The warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners, provided the service history is up to date. That makes it meaningful for used-car buyers too, not just new.

However, the small print contains exclusions that matter given the known issues with this car. Infotainment connectivity failures — including Bluetooth disconnections, app synchronisation failures, and Apple CarPlay drops — are explicitly excluded if caused by software incompatibility or device issues. Given that CarPlay resetting is one of the most-reported owner complaints, this exclusion is worth understanding before purchase. Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) issues and panel gaps are also excluded as falling within "manufacturing tolerances".

Shock absorbers, bushes, and wheel bearings carry only a reduced three-year or 40,000-mile term — not the full seven years. For a car whose suspension has already required a mid-cycle update, this is worth noting.

Who makes it and will they last?

The Omoda E5 is built by Chery Automobile, founded in Wuhu, Anhui Province in 1997. Chery is partially state-owned — municipal governments hold around 36% — and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2024. It is China's largest car exporter for 23 consecutive years.

Financially, the picture is robust. Chery's 2025 annual results (filed with HKEX) showed revenue of ¥300 billion — approximately £32.5 billion — up 11% year on year, with net profit of ¥19 billion, up 35%. It sold 2.8 million vehicles in 2025. Its net margin is higher than either BYD or Tesla.

In the UK specifically, Chery's combined brands (Omoda, Jaecoo, Chery, and the forthcoming Lepas) sold 53,600 cars in 2025 — 2.7% of the entire UK market. That puts the group ahead of Tesla, Mini, Honda, and Mazda in volume terms. There are now more than 130 Omoda/Jaecoo UK dealer sites, up from 72 in March 2025. The brand has announced early-stage talks about UK manufacturing using Jaguar Land Rover facilities.

The risk is not financial collapse — this is not a startup. The risk is what every rapidly expanding new entrant faces: a dealer network that has grown faster than its training and parts infrastructure, resulting in variable service quality and, in some cases, longer waits for parts or specialist diagnostics. Multiple UK owners have reported "no fault found" responses after bringing in cars with genuine problems. That is a process and training gap, not a financial one, and it tends to improve as the brand matures.

The battery and powertrain — the strong part

The Omoda E5 uses BYD's Blade battery — a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry that has been proven across tens of millions of vehicles globally. LFP chemistry is inherently more thermally stable than the nickel-manganese-cobalt cells used in many rivals, and less prone to capacity degradation over time. The 61.4kWh pack (60.4kWh usable) is manufactured by BYD under a supply agreement with Chery — an unusual but notable arrangement given BYD's status as the world's largest EV maker.

JD Power's China Vehicle Dependability Study 2025 ranked Chery as the highest-scoring Chinese domestic brand, at 188 problems per 100 vehicles — better than FAW Hongqi, Geely, and several others. This covers the broader Chery range, not the E5 specifically, but it is the most rigorous Chinese-market quality benchmark available and speaks to manufacturing process standards.

No powertrain failures — motor, inverter, or battery pack — have been documented in accessible owner data across UK, Australian, New Zealand, or Malaysian markets. The complaints pattern is consistently software and assembly (the driveshaft recall), not drivetrain. That is an important distinction.

How it stacks up against rivals

For all its documented issues, the Omoda E5's reliability standing relative to its closest rivals deserves an honest look.

The MG4 — the most direct volume competitor — has one of the worst documented reliability records of any EV in the UK market. What Car?'s 2024 survey placed it last in a field of 18 electric vehicles, with 30% of cars going wrong and 39% of repair costs falling to owners. In the 2026 Auto Express Driver Power survey of 50 individual cars, the MG4 ranked 48th. That is a documented, multi-year, survey-backed poor reliability story. The Omoda E5 has no such record — because it is too new, not because it has been surveyed and passed.

The BYD Atto 3 ranked 30th out of 31 brands in the 2025 Auto Express Driver Power survey. It has documented 12V battery drain issues and infotainment problems that mirror the Omoda's software concerns.

The Omoda E5 is unproven in long-term surveys. It has documented software shortfalls and one safety recall. That is not the same as being proven unreliable. What the available data supports is that the E5's core powertrain — battery, motor, drive system — has no documented failures, while its software and assembly quality reflect the broader pattern of a rapidly internationalising brand.

The seven-year warranty materially de-risks the ownership proposition compared with rivals. It does not solve every problem (see the exclusions), but it means the car can be serviced under warranty when genuine faults do emerge.

The buyer's checklist

The Omoda E5 is not a problem car in the sense of widespread mechanical failures. Its core powertrain — BYD Blade battery, permanent magnet synchronous motor — is reliable by all available evidence. The documented issues are in software maturity and early assembly quality, and one confirmed safety recall.

For buyers, the practical checklist is short:

**Check the recall.** Use gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall with the VIN. DVSA R/2026/013 (driveshaft nut) should have been completed on all affected 2025-model-year cars by now, but verify it before buying any used example.

**Buy post-August 2025 build if possible.** The mid-cycle update addressed braking feel and suspension — two genuine criticisms of launch cars. Build date is on the V5C document.

**Confirm current software version at delivery.** Ask the dealer to confirm the latest available software is installed. This matters for 12V charging behaviour and ADAS calibration.

**Understand the warranty exclusions.** CarPlay connectivity issues may not be covered. Software-related problems are in a grey area. Keep records of any reported issues and dealer responses.

**Weigh the warranty against rivals.** Seven years bumper-to-bumper and eight years on the battery pack is genuinely better than what MG or most European brands offer at this price. That protection matters if problems emerge in years three to seven.

The car that Omoda sold at launch was not fully finished — the rapid August 2025 update confirmed that. The car being sold now, with the updated software and revised chassis settings, is materially better. Whether long-term mechanical reliability matches the warranty's ambition can only be answered in another two or three years of fleet data.
