Guide
The Polestar 2 is built in Geely's Luqiao factory in Zhejiang, China — yet sells as a premium Swedish brand from £45,210. It has class-leading range (up to 409 miles WLTP), strong Euro NCAP scores and the best Android-based infotainment of any EV. The catch: early models had a high fault rate and the brand has never turned a profit. This guide covers who really makes it, UK prices, verified WLTP range, reliability data from What Car? 2025, warranty terms direct from Polestar UK, company-car tax, residual values and whether the brand-survival risk is real for UK buyers.
The Polestar 2 is built at Geely's Luqiao CMA Super Factory in Zhejiang Province, China. It shares its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform with the Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge — the same bones, the same factory complex, different badges. Polestar was founded as a Volvo performance division and spun out in 2017 into a joint venture majority-owned by Geely Holding, China's largest private automotive conglomerate.
The most important question for any buyer: will the brand still exist in five years? The honest answer is: probably, but with caveats. Polestar (Nasdaq: PSNY) has never made a profit and has required repeated capital injections from Geely. It conducted a reverse stock split in 2024 to maintain its Nasdaq listing. In January 2025, CEO Michael Lohscheller set a target for EBITDA-positive in 2025 and 30–35% sales volume growth through 2027. Geely's CEO, who sits on the Polestar board, explicitly committed to continued funding support.
In June 2026, the US Commerce Department banned Polestar from selling new vehicles in America from the 2027 model year under the Connected Vehicles Rule — a data-security measure affecting vehicles with Chinese-linked connectivity. For UK buyers, this has no direct consumer impact: the ban is US-specific and Polestar's UK operation continues normally. The ban may actually benefit UK buyers: it forces Polestar's commercial focus even more firmly onto Europe, where 78% of its Q1 2026 sales already occur. Polestar has also announced its next new model, the Polestar 7 compact SUV, will be manufactured at Volvo's Slovakia factory.
The practical mitigant for UK buyers: Polestar shares its service network with Volvo Cars dealerships. Even in the unlikely event of brand restructuring, your warranty work would be covered by a well-capitalised European service infrastructure, not solely dependent on Polestar's standalone survival.
Three core Polestar 2 variants are available new in the UK for 2026, all carrying the 'Prime' designation which includes the Plus Pack, Pilot Pack and Climate Pack as standard. Prices start at £45,210 for the Standard Range Single Motor, rising to £58,210 for the Long Range Dual Motor with Performance Pack.
The entry-level Standard Range Single Motor uses a 70 kWh battery (67 kWh usable) with 200 kW (272 hp), rear-wheel drive and 180 kW DC charging. The Long Range Single Motor steps up to 82 kWh (79 kWh usable), 220 kW (299 hp) and 205 kW DC charging. The Long Range Dual Motor adds all-wheel drive and 310 kW (421 hp) for £53,210, or 350 kW (476 hp) with the Performance Pack — adding Öhlins DFV dampers, Brembo four-piston brakes and forged alloy wheels for £58,210.
All prime-specification cars come with panoramic glass roof, Harman Kardon audio, fully electric seats, wireless charging, heat pump and pilot assist as standard — reducing the options game considerably. The used market starts from around £12,000 for early 2021 examples, rising to £30,000+ for near-new 2024 models.
Polestar's range figures are among the strongest in the segment. The Long Range Single Motor claims 409 miles WLTP — competitive with the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and ahead of most Chinese-origin rivals. The Standard Range Single Motor claims 344 miles WLTP. These are officially verified EU/UK WLTP figures from the Polestar UK specifications page.
In the real world, ev-database.org estimates the SR SM averages around 250 miles in typical mixed driving, with a cold-weather highway estimate of 180 miles. carwow's reviewer achieved 330+ miles from the Long Range SM in fairly cold conditions — a strong result. The WLTP-to-real-world gap is broadly in line with industry norms; Polestar does not appear to inflate its figures unusually.
Charging is a genuine strength. The SR SM supports 180 kW DC peak and claims 26 minutes from 10–80%; the LR variants hit 205 kW DC and 28 minutes 10–80%. All cars support CCS fast charging, 11 kW AC home charging, ISO 15118 Plug & Charge and battery preconditioning via navigation. Unlike some rivals, Polestar also confirmed compatibility with opened Tesla Supercharger network in the UK via CCS. The car does not support V2L or bidirectional charging (V2G/V2H).
Polestar's reliability record is mixed but trending in the right direction. The headline numbers are uncomfortable: Auto Express Driver Power 2023 found 69% of first-year Polestar 2 owners reported a fault — ranking the car 71st out of 75 for reliability. The What Car? 2025 Reliability Survey was kinder, placing the Polestar 2 15th out of 19 EVs with a 42% owner fault rate — ahead of the Porsche Taycan but below Tesla Model 3. Almost all faults were covered under warranty and two-thirds were fixed in one day.
The most common problems across both surveys are consistent: infotainment screen freezes and resets, 12V battery failures, and connectivity module (TCAM) dropouts that disable app control, GPS and digital key. A suspension knock from front strut bearings was addressed by a service bulletin in some markets. Earlier models (2020–2021) also triggered two formal DVSA recalls: ~700 cars for inverter capacitor terminal defects and ~2,400 for high-voltage contactor software issues.
The important context: the MY2024 facelift addressed most known issues. The entry model switched from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, power and torque increased substantially, and accumulated OTA software updates have matured the Android Automotive implementation. If you're buying used, aim for 2022 or newer; 2024+ is safer still. If you're buying new, the Prime-spec MY26 cars benefit from three generations of refinement.
For the UK service network: Polestar uses Volvo Cars dealer infrastructure, meaning most repairs happen at well-equipped Volvo workshops nationwide rather than requiring specialist-only centres.
Polestar UK offers three overlapping warranties on the Polestar 2, all confirmed on the official UK support page as of July 2026. The vehicle warranty covers manufacturing defects for three years or 60,000 miles — shorter than some Chinese rivals (BYD offers six years, Jaecoo seven) but standard for the premium segment. Importantly, it is fully transferable to subsequent owners.
The battery warranty is eight years or 100,000 miles with a 70% State-of-Health threshold: if the battery drops below 70% capacity within that period, Polestar repairs or replaces it at no cost. This is a meaningful commitment and sits at the stronger end of the market.
The corrosion warranty runs for 12 years and is also transferable, covering perforation by corrosion of bodywork panels.
For buyers concerned about brand survival: Polestar uses Volvo Cars' service network, and the extended warranty product is administered by an insurance provider — meaning warranty obligations sit partly with a third-party insurer rather than solely with Polestar's own balance sheet.
The Polestar 2 was the first mass-production car to use Android Automotive OS and remains among the strongest implementations. The system is built around Google's native stack — Google Maps, Google Assistant, Google Gemini, Chrome, Spotify, YouTube, Waze, Tidal, Prime Video and TuneIn Radio are all included for the first 12 months. Unlike some rivals with China-designed operating systems that need geo-unlocking for UK use, the Polestar 2's software is a Western-developed platform that works immediately and updates via Google's infrastructure.
The 11.2-inch portrait touchscreen has an anti-reflective coating and drives a clean interface. The 12.3-inch driver display sits in front of the steering wheel. OTA updates keep both current. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported via wired connection — not wireless, which is a minor inconvenience on a car at this price point.
The driver-assistance suite in Prime specification includes Pilot Assist (semi-autonomous highway driving), 360-degree cameras, blind-spot information with steer assist, cross-traffic alert with brake support and emergency stop assist. This is comprehensive at the price.
One note for Chinese-EV-curious buyers: there are no China-specific features to worry about. No China-market apps, no language complications, no server dependency on Chinese infrastructure. The connectivity runs through Google and Western cloud services.
The Polestar 2 was tested under Euro NCAP 2021 protocols and achieved a five-star rating. The adult occupant score of 93% is class-leading for the time of testing. Child occupant protection scored 89%, vulnerable road users 80% and safety assist 83%. ANCAP (Australia/New Zealand, equivalent protocol) matched these results.
Key structural features include eight airbags covering front, side, inner-side and curtain positions, plus a boron steel safety cage. A centre airbag between front seats provides far-side impact protection. AEB (autonomous emergency braking) performed well in NCAP testing, avoiding collisions in almost all scenarios. Battery pack has its own post-collision automatic disconnect system.
The Polestar 2 sits above the £40,000 threshold, so all new UK purchases incur the £425/year 'Expensive Car Supplement' VED surcharge for the first five years after the first year. The standard annual VED for a zero-emission car is £10 for the first year registration, then the flat-rate electric car rate (£195 from April 2025) plus the supplement applies.
As a company car, the Polestar 2 benefits from low BiK rates that make it highly competitive for salary sacrifice and fleet use. The Standard Range SM carries a P11D value of £45,105. At the current 3% BiK rate for 2025/26, a 20% taxpayer pays approximately £23/month; a 40% taxpayer approximately £45/month. BiK rates rise to 4% in 2026/27 and 5% in 2027/28.
Running costs are otherwise typical for a premium EV: home charging at UK average electricity rates keeps pence-per-mile well below petrol equivalents. Servicing is handled through Volvo dealerships. Insurance is group 40–47 depending on variant and spec — at the higher end for the segment, reflecting the premium positioning and parts costs.
The Polestar 2 is a premium BEV that happens to be built in China under Swedish brand direction. For most UK buyers, the manufacturing origin is largely academic: the car uses a proven Geely/Volvo platform, runs Western software (Google Android Automotive, not a Chinese OS), and is serviced through Volvo's dealer network. The EU tariff that applies to other Chinese EVs hits Polestar in Europe but the UK has not applied an equivalent — meaning UK buyers face no China-EV surcharge on this car as of July 2026.
The strongest arguments for: exceptional range (up to 409 miles WLTP), rapid 205 kW charging, the best native Android system in any car, strong Euro NCAP scores, solid build quality and the Volvo service infrastructure. BiK rates make it a compelling company-car proposition.
The strongest arguments against: early models had a high fault rate (buy MY2024+ new or MY2022+ used and the risk drops significantly); the vehicle warranty is only three years/60,000 miles versus some rivals offering five to seven years; and the brand's financial fragility is a genuine question, even if Geely's backing and Volvo's network provide meaningful insurance.
If the Tesla Model 3 is your benchmark, the Polestar 2 undercuts it on driver dynamics feel and brand confidence but matches it on range and beats it on interior quality and ADAS standard fit. At £45,210 for the Standard Range, it is priced against the BMW i4 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 — both carry stronger reliability records in recent surveys. Buy on the facts, not the badge.
