Atto 1 Essential vs MG3 Excite Hybrid+ NZ: four-seat EV or five-seat hybrid?

At the same advertised NZ$30,990 reference before ORC, Essential offers a smaller four-seat EV; MG3 brings five seats, more driver adjustment and petrol refuelling.

At the same advertised starting amount, choose the routine that fits

The BYD Atto 1 Essential is my starting point for a New Zealand buyer who wants a compact electric hatch, carries no more than four people and can recharge during normal parking. The MG3 Excite Hybrid+ is the more useful starting point when you need a fifth seat, share the car between drivers who want more seat adjustment, or prefer petrol refuelling for unplanned trips. It is a full hybrid that does not plug in. Neither is automatically the cheaper car to own.

The references checked on 21 October 2026 both show NZ$30,990 before on-road costs, but they have different status: BYD's October manufacturer sheet and one advertised Timaru MG vehicle. That apparent price tie makes the physical differences worth examining. Atto 1 is the shorter, narrower hatch; MG3 offers five seats, a different rear-seat split and a petrol tank alongside its small hybrid battery. I would make that choice before treating either a battery size or a long warranty headline as the answer.

A national BYD MSRP and one Timaru MG stock offer

BYD's New Zealand specification sheet dated 1 October 2026 lists Essential from NZ$30,990, including GST and excluding registration, on-road costs, options and accessories. This is the 30 kWh, 65 kW Essential. The model webpage's 115 kW and 310 km headlines belong to Premium; they are not upgrades included in the Essential price. Apricity White has no colour charge in the sheet, while the other shown colours add NZ$990.

Timaru MG advertises stock 355102 as a new MG3 Excite Hybrid+ FWD at NZ$30,990 plus ORC, with 50 km showing. This is an individual dealer reference, not a nationwide fixed driveaway price or a reserved unit. Its page labels the model year 2026 and displays VIN LSJWP439XRZ211057. We have not independently established the build year or reconciled all catalogue fields. In particular, we do not adopt the dealer's four-speed description as a verified transmission specification. MG's currently linked brochure applies to MY26 with data dated June 2026. Its Excite Hybrid+ equipment below must be confirmed against the supplied unit; the dealer's model-year label alone does not establish that match.

Obtain the delivered cash totals on the same basis, including colour, registration, accessories and any transport to your location. Have Timaru identify the exact car and warranty commencement in that quotation. BYD's catalogue availability does not establish an allocated vehicle or delivery date. An online monthly finance illustration is a separate proposal, not a substitute for either cash total.

Four seats versus five, within two genuinely small hatchbacks

Atto 1 Essential has four seating positions in its New Zealand sheet. The named MG3 listing has five. This is a hard distinction for carrying a third rear passenger, even if that need only arises on the school run or when a relative visits. No calculation about electricity can provide an extra approved seat. Five listed seats also do not guarantee that three particular child restraints fit across the MG; the required restraints and passengers still need a demonstration.

The published lengths are 3,990 mm for Atto 1 and 4,113 mm for MG3. The MG is therefore 123 mm longer on these references. Published widths are 1,720 and 1,797 mm respectively. MG's dimension drawing explicitly identifies 1,797 mm as excluding mirrors and gives 2,014 mm including them. BYD's sheet does not establish the same mirror-clearance basis, so the two body figures are a starting point for parking, not proof of the space needed between your garage walls.

The rear-seat splits are 50:50 in Atto 1 and 60:40 in MG3 Excite Hybrid+. That is useful when carrying a long item with one or two rear passengers, because different portions remain upright. Work through your actual passenger arrangement rather than simply assuming that the five-seat car can keep every place while carrying long luggage. For a single driver in a tight parking space I would favour trying the BYD first; for an occasionally five-person household the MG answers a need the BYD cannot.

Seat adjustment and mirror operation matter more than a screen-size contest

Essential's selected column gives a four-way manually adjusted driver's seat and four-way manual front passenger seat, with synthetic-leather upholstery. MG's NZ brochure gives Excite Hybrid+ a six-way manual driver's seat, four-way manual passenger seat and fabric upholstery. The additional driver adjustment is a reason to try the MG with both regular drivers; it is not proof that its seat will fit every body better. Neither selected grade is being credited with the power or heated seats of a richer version.

There is a useful parking distinction too. Atto 1 Essential has electrically adjusted and heated exterior mirrors that fold manually. MG3 Excite Hybrid+ lists electrically adjustable, heated, automatically folding mirrors. If you frequently squeeze into a narrow space, demonstrate the actual fold operation and the clearance left for doors. Both selected specifications provide a reversing camera; a photograph of a Premium or Essence surround-camera display does not change the ordered equipment.

BYD declares 308 litres minimum boot capacity and 1,037 litres maximum. MG's drawing calls its seats-up figure 293 liquid litres and gives 983 litres folded. We have not established identical measurement methods, so the nominal numbers do not justify a precise usable-space victory. The different seat splits and opening shape may matter more to the pushchair or shopping crates you actually carry. Keep the required seats upright during that loading demonstration.

One needs a charging routine; the other needs petrol

Essential uses a 30 kWh traction battery and declares 220 km WLTP range. Its New Zealand sheet specifies Type 2 AC at 11 kW and CCS2 DC up to 65 kW. It gives manufacturer references of 3.5 hours from 0 to 100% on AC and 30 minutes from 10 to 80% on DC. Those are stated conditions and windows, not a charging session we have measured. A domestic installation may provide less than the car's listed AC capability.

MG3 Hybrid+ combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 1.83 kWh hybrid battery. MG explains that the car replenishes the battery while driving, including through regeneration, without an external charging cable. That removes the need to arrange a plug where you live. It does not turn the small battery into an EV range allowance or remove the need to buy petrol. The NZ brochure specifies a 36-litre tank and RON 95 or higher for Hybrid+, distinct from its petrol-only grades.

For a driver with dependable overnight charging, the BYD can replenish during time already spent at home. For someone parking on the street without dependable charging, the MG avoids a recurring charging errand. That difference is more decisive than comparing the two battery capacities as if they served the same purpose.

A 300 km day changes the balance without changing the cars

Consider an illustrative 300 km day, rather than a claimed test route. That distance exceeds Essential's entire declared 220 km WLTP reference before any allowance for load, heating, weather or a reserve. I would plan a compatible charging opportunity and a backup for the BYD before booking that journey. This is not a prediction of its actual range or a promise that a particular number of stops will suffice.

The MG's advantage here is petrol replenishment without charging equipment, not a verified tank range. We have not calculated its distance between fills. Its hybrid system can use electric propulsion in some driving conditions, but a petrol-electric badge does not promise continuous quiet electric travel through a whole city or motorway leg.

If such days are rare and the planned stops suit you, they need not overturn a BYD city-car choice. If changing destinations and short-notice intercity trips are normal, I would give the MG the first demonstration. Use the roads and passenger load that matter to you to assess response and comfort. We have not driven these cars together, so brochure power figures are not a handling or overtaking assessment.

Read the servicing condition behind the ten-year MG headline

BYD's current NZ model page advertises a vehicle warranty of six years or 150,000 km and a traction-battery warranty of eight years or 160,000 km, whichever applicable limit comes first, subject to terms and exclusions. Roadside assistance is advertised separately. Battery cover, assistance and the vehicle contract are different promises; none establishes the actual likelihood of a failure.

Timaru prominently advertises ten years/250,000 km. MG's current NZ policy applies to relevant vehicles first registered from 1 July 2025. It gives private-use passenger vehicles seven years with unlimited kilometres as standard; extending to ten years/250,000 km requires scheduled services within the specified windows at authorised MG dealers. Commercial use has different cover and no extension. The hybrid high-voltage battery has separate seven-year/150,000 km limits. The ten-year headline is not ten-year battery cover. Confirm the stock car's first registration, use category and full contract before treating the advertisement as your coverage.

For the ownership budget, include insurance, tyres, scheduled servicing and your actual energy use. Add installation and public-charging costs where relevant to the BYD. Check current NZTA road-user-charge obligations and what licence distance is supplied at handover; a petrol hybrid and a battery EV cannot simply be assigned the same treatment. We have not verified a common consumption test or produced a total-cost or payback calculation. The MG brochure's ADR 81/02 fuel figure is not relabelled as a New Zealand WLTP result, and a longer warranty headline does not prove better reliability.

What would make me choose each one after the demonstration?

I would choose Essential from this pair if four places meet the real passenger requirement, its smaller footprint improves daily parking and charging fits normal parking time. I would choose Excite Hybrid+ if the fifth seat, six-way driver adjustment, automatic mirror folding or petrol replenishment makes the shared car substantially easier to use. I would not choose it merely because the dealer writes ten years in large type, or choose the BYD because both advertised references happen to be NZ$30,990.

The next step is two exact-grade demonstrations: set the driver's seat for each usual driver, use the parking space, fold the relevant rear-seat section and load the same luggage with the necessary occupants aboard. Then compare written delivered quotations and the relevant support contracts. Those actions resolve the particular differences identified here; they are not a claim that we performed a loading or driving test.

This is CathayEV's documentary comparison checked on 21 October 2026 UTC. BYD's sheet retains its 1 October date; MG's currently linked NZ brochure covers MY26 with data dated June 2026; it does not establish the individual stock car's build date. Manufacturer and named-dealer evidence provide the specifications, while the recommendations and journey example are our interpretation. Continue with other New Zealand buying guides if neither arrangement fits your household.

Questions about these two New Zealand hatchbacks

Can Atto 1 Essential carry five people in New Zealand?
The current New Zealand sheet lists four seats. MG3 Excite Hybrid+ stock 355102 lists five. If a fifth approved seating position is required, the MG answers that requirement within this pair; child-restraint fit still needs checking.
Are both cars NZ$30,990 driveaway?
No. BYD lists Essential from NZ$30,990 including GST but excluding registration, on-road costs, options and accessories. The MG amount is Timaru stock 355102 at NZ$30,990 plus ORC. Obtain the final delivered amounts before calling either cheaper.
Does MG3 Excite Hybrid+ need a charger?
No external plug is required. MG describes a full-hybrid system with a petrol engine and a 1.83 kWh battery that recharges while driving. Its NZ brochure specifies RON 95 or higher; it is not an electric car with a separately quoted EV driving range.
Does the ten-year MG advertisement establish an unconditional warranty advantage?
No. The current NZ policy makes the private-use extension conditional on scheduled authorised-MG servicing. It lists separate seven-year/150,000 km hybrid-battery cover. Confirm eligibility and first registration for the actual stock car.
Which is easier for occasional longer trips?
MG3 avoids an external charging requirement and replenishes with petrol. Essential can work when compatible charging and a reserve fit the journey, but its 220 km WLTP reference is not a guaranteed real-world distance. No common range or charging test was performed here.
