BYD Dolphin in New Zealand: price, range, warranty and what to check before buying

The BYD Dolphin is built by BYD, the world's largest maker of new-energy vehicles and a Fortune 500 company that produces its own batteries, semiconductors and powertrain components. In New Zealand, BYD is imported and distributed by Ateco Automotive under the BYD Auto NZ brand, with dealers in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other centres. BYD's global scale makes the parent company low-risk, but the local operation is still young compared with Toyota, Hyundai or Kia, and parts and service capacity outside the main centres are not yet proven. We treat local aftersales maturity as a high-risk item for buyers in regional New Zealand.

In China, the Dolphin is sold as the 比亚迪海豚. Owner feedback on Autohome is generally positive, with a score around 4.50 out of 5, and the main praise is for value, interior space, running costs and city manoeuvrability. The 12365auto complaint register shows a relatively low fault rate, but the most common themes are infotainment freezes, A-pillar blind spots, paint/rust issues and charging-port overheating. Because these are Chinese-market vehicles with different trims and software to the NZ car, they are directional only, not a direct reliability forecast.

The NZ Dolphin is a right-hand-drive export with ANCAP five-star crash protection, local warranty terms and English-language software. The Chinese car has a wider range of battery sizes, the Chinese mapping/voice ecosystem and different trim names. The NZ warranty is six years or 150,000km for the vehicle and eight years or 160,000km for the battery, with roadside assist included for eight years. Buyers should check the exact build date and factory: a September 2024 recall in China affected BYD Dolphin and Yuan Plus vehicles built between November 2022 and December 2023, and BYD Australia said Australian cars were not impacted. The New Zealand recall status is not confirmed on Waka Kotahi's recall register, so buyers should verify with a dealer before purchase.

CarExpert NZ lists the Dolphin from $39,990 plus on-road costs for the Essential and $48,990 for the Premium. EVDB.nz records the Essential with a 44.9kWh usable LFP battery and 340km WLTP, while the Premium/Long Range is listed at 427km with a larger battery pack. DC charging is commonly quoted at 60-80kW, depending on source and battery size. The ANCAP five-star rating covers the 2023 model, with adult occupant protection at 89%, child occupant 86%, vulnerable road user 85% and safety assist 77%. Running costs include road user charges at $76 per 1,000km for a light EV and no Clean Car Discount, which ended on 31 December 2023. Because price, availability, warranty, range and charging claims are all shifting, we mark the whole section as high-risk.

The Dolphin's strongest appeal is value: a five-star ANCAP electric hatchback with a long battery warranty, decent city range and a practical cabin from under $40,000 plus on-road costs. Standard features include a rotating touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 360-degree camera and V2L. The downside is uncertainty: BYD NZ appears to be phasing out the Dolphin in favour of newer ATTO models, so availability, final pricing and the dealer network are moving targets. Charging speed is modest by 2026 standards, the boot is small by SUV standards, and the 2024 CEPS recall has not been confirmed for NZ. Buy only after confirming stock, warranty terms and recall status with a BYD dealer.
