Sealion 7 Premium vs bZ4X 2WD: family fit before the charging claims

Start with bZ4X for the tighter bay; try Sealion 7 if its larger body is useful. Confirm the Toyota build, two complete quotes and BYD cashback conditions.

Try bZ4X for the tighter bay; Sealion 7 if the larger footprint earns its place

Put the Toyota bZ4X 2WD first on the test-drive list if a smaller exterior is important to your family parking space. Try the BYD Sealion 7 Premium first if its larger body accommodates the people and equipment you actually carry and its completed quote fits your budget. Neither preference is a finding about ride comfort, reliability or charging speed from a CathayEV road test.

Before allowing Toyota's advertised 22 kW AC capability or its range reference to decide the purchase, confirm the specification of the build being offered. The current dealer information and its linked June 2026 specification sheet disagree on motor power and the quoted DC charging time. We retain that conflict rather than picking the more attractive number.

The selected BYD is Premium rear-wheel drive, not Performance AWD. The Toyota is the Australian 2WD, not AWD or Touring. Both have current local sales or quotation routes; an enquiry route does not confirm a particular car, price or handover date.

Two Australian selections, with the Toyota build still needing a written specification

The BYD Australian configuration route lists Sealion 7 Premium at A$54,990 as its model amount. Its stale February/March 2025 delivery wording is not evidence of current availability. Use the present order or stock enquiry to identify the unit, and ask for its model year and delivery date rather than inheriting an old website estimate.

The New Town Toyota model page currently lists bZ4X 2WD and provides local enquiry and customisation routes. The linked Toyota sheet is explicitly accurate as at June 2026 and warns that delivered specifications may differ. Its 167 kW reference also appears in part of the model page, while another 2WD block says 165 kW.

Ask for the specification attached to your order. We have not established a current Toyota cash total or a vehicle allocation. The ability to begin a configuration is evidence of a sales route, not proof of a particular build sitting in a yard.

Keep the version, price basis and charging conditions alongside the numbers

These are documentary references for the Australian selections. Toyota's sheet is dated, while the dealer page combines descriptions that are not entirely consistent. The table does not certify which motor or charging session belongs to a car you have been allocated.

The BYD amount is a model figure, not an all-in quote matched to a Toyota invoice. Likewise, a larger battery, an AC rating or a DC peak does not establish a lower cost of ownership or a shorter real stop. Use the table to request the missing contractual details before ranking either purchase.

The A$4,000 cashback is conditional; it does not complete the quote

The BYD offers page separately includes Sealion 7 Premium in a A$4,000 cashback campaign. It states orders between 1 October and 21 December 2026 and delivery by 31 December 2026. Fleet customers, demonstrators or service-loan vehicles and transactions involving additional promotions or discounts are excluded. A late-delivery extension is something BYD may review, not an automatic entitlement.

Do not deduct A$4,000 from the model amount and call the result your drive-away price. Have the retailer show how the benefit appears in the actual proposal and whether it is already included. Keep registration, CTP, stamp duty, dealer delivery, paint, accessories and any charging work visible for your postcode.

We have no equivalent current Toyota cash proposal. We therefore publish no acquisition-price gap, payback period or lower-price winner. An older list price, an indexed stock snippet or a finance bonus with an expired deadline would not fill that gap. If finance or a novated lease interests you, compare its full obligations separately; a different promotion is not an extra cash discount to stack without confirmation.

A smaller exterior is useful only if the family test also works

The BYD sheet and June Toyota sheet differ by 140 mm in declared length and 65 mm in width, by editorial subtraction. These are body references; they do not settle mirror clearance, door opening, accessory fitment or how easily a child can get past a pillar. Measure the route into the bay as well as the bay itself.

If your current car only just allows the garage door to close, start with the Toyota reference and verify the actual demonstrator. If you need to load bulky family equipment, try the larger BYD with the same people and objects before deciding that its footprint buys useful space. Neither exterior size nor wheelbase is a direct measurement of rear-seat comfort.

BYD separates front and rear luggage compartments, while Toyota publishes its own cargo figure. We have not established a common loading method that turns those figures into a guaranteed extra suitcase. Keep the seats your passengers need upright, take the pram or mobility aid and check the opening, cable storage and tailgate clearance. A folded-seat photograph cannot answer a five-person trip.

A 22 kW AC reference matters only with the build and supply to use it

The Toyota sheet lists a maximum 22 kW AC input and different indicative times for single-phase and three-phase charging. The BYD specification lists 11 kW AC. If your regular supply cannot provide the relevant three-phase power, the larger vehicle rating will not upgrade it. Ask an electrician about the actual circuit, load management, protection and installed cost.

For DC, both sheets name a 150 kW reference. That is not a shared charging curve or proof of equal travel stops. Toyota's June sheet gives approximately 45 minutes from 10 to 80%, while the current dealer block gives approximately 28 minutes for the same stated endpoints. We cannot settle the difference by averaging them or selecting the quicker claim. Obtain the applicable build documentation and its conditions.

Check stations on your recurring routes, payment, access hours and alternatives. A charger advertised above the car's peak does not force that peak throughout a session. Temperature, starting charge and shared station power can change the experience. We did not charge either car or verify network compatibility at every site, so no measured charging winner follows from these documents.

591 and 482 km WLTP are planning references, not a promised extra journey

The local Premium column gives 482 km combined WLTP; use that WLTP column rather than a figure from another procedure. Toyota's linked June sheet gives 591 km WLTP for 2WD and explains that real driving can be significantly lower. The dealer also displays the 591 km reference, but the specification conflicts still make the chosen build important.

We do not promise a fixed extra motorway distance from subtracting those numbers. Tyres, load, weather, speed, cabin heating and the reserve you need at arrival change a trip. Identify the longest regular journey, then check charging options and a fallback rather than assuming a route fits because it is shorter than the catalogue number.

Nor does the BYD's larger declared battery prove higher consumption or the Toyota's range prove your energy bill. We have no common route or meter readings. For everyday use, reliable charging while the car is already parked may matter more than a laboratory gap you rarely need.

Compare the demonstrators you can order, then price their support

Ask the BYD retailer to demonstrate the Premium's actual equipment and avoid importing Performance hardware or AWD acceleration into the conversation. At Toyota, distinguish 2WD equipment from AWD and Touring features. The supplied list, the display car and the car in your contract should agree when a camera, seat, control or loading function is decisive.

Try phone connection, navigation, parking visibility, driver-assistance controls and your child restraints. A manufacturer equipment list establishes declared features, not a comparative test of calibration, comfort or emergency response. No local crash-test winner is assigned here without matching the result to the selected build.

Request vehicle and battery warranty conditions, maintenance requirements, insurance quotes and the workshop that will handle an immobilised car. Ask about parts and mobility arrangements, but do not treat a verbal assurance as a measured repair-time record. We have no equivalent failure or resale sample for these selections, and a familiar badge or longer coverage is not a substitute for the applicable contract.

Choose the useful fit, then close the missing Toyota specification

Book bZ4X 2WD first if parking clearance is the constraint, and confirm that the actual unit matches the useful dimensions and charging specification. Book Sealion 7 Premium first if its larger body solves a genuine loading or seating problem and the finished quote, including any eligible cashback, makes sense. If both fit, test them back to back with the same family task.

Before a deposit, get grade, build, battery, equipment, on-road total, promotion treatment and delivery in writing. Resolve the Toyota power and DC-time discrepancy if either will influence your choice. You can still make a sensible shortlist while its cash amount is unknown; you cannot responsibly declare a cash or real charging winner until the relevant evidence is complete.

Australian sources and the limits of this documentary comparison

Manufacturer and authorised Australian dealer pages were read on 19 October 2026, together with the local Sealion 7 PDF and the model-linked Toyota specification accurate as at June 2026. A current download does not change that printed date or guarantee the delivered build. The separate cashback terms keep their original order and delivery deadlines.

Recommendations and dimensional subtractions are editorial. There was no CathayEV drive, charging session, luggage measurement, reliability study, reservation or finance application. Current Toyota cash, allocated units, final delivered specifications and personalised ownership costs remain open. We do not substitute overseas grades, an old search price or an expired incentive for those answers.

Questions before the family test drive

Can I treat the A$54,990 amount less cashback as the final BYD cost?
No. It is a model amount, while cashback has order, delivery and eligibility conditions. Obtain an itemised postcode-specific drive-away proposal and check whether the benefit is already included.
Does the Toyota charge from 10 to 80% in 28 or 45 minutes?
The current dealer block and June 2026 linked sheet give those different references. We have not resolved the chosen build and conditions or measured a session; do not select the faster figure as a guarantee.
Is this Sealion 7 Performance against bZ4X AWD?
No. The comparison selects Australian Sealion 7 Premium RWD and bZ4X 2WD. AWD, Touring and foreign-market specifications do not fill missing facts for these cars.
