IM6 Premium 75 or BYD SEALION 7 Premium in Australia: space, range and October quotes

A same-grade Australian SUV choice: the IM6's wider body and published luggage figure against SEALION 7 Premium's narrower shell, 482 km WLTP claim and a conditional October cashback. Match the actual delivered quotes.

The short answer: choose the car that fits your space and quote

Put the Australian IM6 Premium 75 on the list if its broad cabin and published 665 L seats-up boot solve a real weekly loading problem and your garage has room for a 1,988 mm-wide body. Put the BYD SEALION 7 Premium on the list if the narrower body, 482 km WLTP claim and a written October purchase price suit you better. Both are five-seat, rear-drive electric SUVs sold in Australia. Those conditional recommendations may reverse after you load the same pram into both cars, measure your doorway clearance and compare two itemised drive-away offers for the same state and registration type.

This is a comparison of manufacturer documents and live Australian sales channels checked on 24 October 2026. We did not conduct a back-to-back drive, charging session or luggage test. Importantly, MG's Premium is the 400V entry grade with a 450 km WLTP claim; the frequently advertised 800V platform, 555 km and 396 kW peak charger belong to IM6 Platinum. BYD's 456 km hero statistic belongs to SEALION 7 Performance, while Premium is listed at 482 km. Comparing the wrong grades would change the answer before you ever enter a dealership.

Exactly which Australian versions are being compared?

MG Motor Australia's current IM6 page and configurator offer the Premium 75 kWh rear-drive grade, with stock marked available now on the configurator. BYD Australia's current SEALION 7 page, MY26 specification and build route offer the Premium rear-drive grade. Both have Australian test-drive and ordering paths. A national online listing establishes an offer, not a guaranteed VIN in a chosen colour at your local dealer. Ask for build year, VIN, delivery date and the version of the specification booklet attached to that car.

The MG web page labels its general product data as applying to MY25 and warns that specifications can change. BYD's linked sheet is for MY26. We compare those identified public specifications, then ask you to confirm the exact delivered car. A demonstrator, a late plate-clearance vehicle and a new-build order can carry different accessories and transaction conditions even under the same grade name.

Premium-to-Premium evidence at a glance

Read the two columns as manufacturer specifications and dated sales references, not a matched road test. The separate sections below examine luggage and charging, where measurement methods and curves make headline figures easy to misuse. The price row deliberately preserves each offer's eligibility conditions instead of subtracting two unlike numbers. Neither listed offer establishes what a different Australian postcode or a later delivery month will pay. Use this snapshot to shortlist the two exact rear-drive grades, then take the same questions and cargo to both dealers.

October offers are real, but their displayed numbers are not a matched cash quote

On 24 October, MG's IM6 configurator displayed A$57,990 drive-away for a white Premium in New South Wales with private registration, reduced from a displayed A$60,990 by a A$3,000 cashback. The offer text requires a participating dealer, an eligible new vehicle sold and delivered from 1 to 31 October 2026, and available stock. Changing state, registration, paint, accessories or delivery timing can alter that number. Do not apply the cash figure to a November handover without a fresh written offer.

BYD's current offers page advertises A$4,000 cashback on SEALION 7 Premium for eligible new retail orders from 1 October to 21 December, ordinarily delivered by 31 December. It excludes fleet and some other transactions and cannot simply be combined with every promotion. The older A$54,990 SEALION 7 drive-away campaign visible in search results ended 30 September; it is not an October price guarantee. We therefore cannot establish an honest current national price gap from the two public pages. Request written drive-away cash totals from both sellers for the same postcode, registration type, colour, exact VIN and collection date, itemising cashback, statutory charges, accessories and any charging equipment. Compare finance or novated-lease quotes separately from cash; do not treat a lower monthly payment as a lower purchase cost.

Will the larger IM6 fit your garage and your weekly load?

MG lists the IM6 at 4,904 mm long and 1,988 mm wide; BYD lists the SEALION 7 at 4,830 mm and 1,925 mm. The IM6 is thus 74 mm longer and 63 mm wider on those body figures. Neither figure tells you the width across open doors, mirrors, the turning path or the space needed beside a wall charger. If your carport has one tight side, measure the clear opening and try the actual parking manoeuvre in both test drives. Camera views and driver aids do not make a fixed brick wall wider.

MG's Premium specification publishes a 665 L rear boot with the seats up and 32 L in front. BYD publishes 500 L behind the rear seats and 58 L in front. Both seat five. Their volume numbers are useful prompts but not proof that the IM6 will take 165 L more of your oddly shaped bags in practice; brands can define and fill measurement spaces differently. Bring the same pram, suitcase, sports gear and charging cable. Keep the rear seats in the position your passengers actually use, check the opening height and underfloor space, and then decide whether MG's apparent luggage advantage matters more than BYD's narrower footprint.

A 32 km WLTP difference is a planning input, not a road-test result

The Premium-grade claims are 450 km WLTP for IM6 and 482 km WLTP for SEALION 7, both on the same named laboratory cycle. BYD's nominal 32 km margin is meaningful as a specification difference, but it does not prove a 32 km advantage at motorway speed or in a hot Australian summer with five people and luggage. Tyres, climate control, wind, topography and how much charge you reserve at arrival change the usable distance. For your longest regular trip, note the route and a comfortable battery reserve, then identify two usable CCS sites and a backup rather than planning to arrive at zero.

MG lists the IM6 Premium on a 400V platform with a 153 kW maximum DC figure. BYD's MY26 sheet lists CCS2 at 150 kW and Type 2 AC at 11 kW. That small 3 kW peak difference is not a like-for-like charging-time test. We have no matched 10-80% curves or Australian site logs for these grades, so we do not claim a faster road-trip stop. MG's 800V/396 kW advertising belongs to Platinum and Performance, not this Premium. Check the actual charge port and AC capability of the quoted IM6 VIN, your home's available supply, public-network access and charging costs before assigning a savings number. A battery's stated capacity alone cannot determine your delivered electricity bill.

Try the interfaces and the kit you will use every day

Both current model pages show substantial screen-led cabins, surround-view aids and electric-family convenience, but the exact menus and included accessories deserve a physical check. BYD explicitly lists V2L, an adaptor, a portable cable and a heat-pump climate system in its MY26 sheet. MG's configurator shows several charging accessories as optional, including a separate V2L cable; this does not prove the car lacks V2L, only that the supplied cable and eligible load must be confirmed on the purchase order. Neither a glossy dashboard photo nor another trim's option list is enough to promise the feature you intend to use.

Take the person who uses the front passenger seat most often. Check entry height, child-seat attachment, rear-door opening, outward vision and whether common functions require too much screen work. If a camper appliance is your tiebreaker, demonstrate the correct V2L adaptor at a dealer rather than assuming the same plug comes in each boot. If phone pairing, maps or over-the-air updates matter, inspect the software version on the proposed VIN. We have not independently benchmarked either interface or ride quality.

Safety ratings are comparable; local ownership still needs a VIN check

ANCAP lists five-star ratings tested under its 2025 protocol for both IM 6 and SEALION 7, applicable to all variants in the listed Australian ranges. That gives a useful common independent starting point, but one shared star count does not tell you which driver-assistance alerts you will like or whether a child seat fits your family. Read both ANCAP reports, fit your actual restraint in each car, and test the controls. Both are substantial vehicles; visibility and parking in your own setting remain important.

BYD's Australian model page states six years/150,000 km vehicle and eight years/160,000 km traction-battery warranty, subject to terms. MG directs owners to its own warranty terms; do not carry a different MG-branded vehicle's campaign across to an IM-badged car without the policy for the actual registration. Ask both sellers which local workshop will service this VIN, the service schedule, battery-health conditions and parts process. Get two insurance quotes for the exact version, driver and postcode. We have no verified comparative repair-rate sample, insurance premium, depreciation forecast or resale guarantee for this pair, so none is hidden inside our verdict.

A same-day decision method for Australian households

First, get two dated delivered-cash quotes on identical registration terms and confirm whether either October cashback can actually be redeemed on the available VIN. Second, repeat the same parking approach and load the same weekly cargo with all normal occupants in place. Third, use a regular intercity route with a reserve and public charging backup to see whether the BYD's 32 km WLTP margin would change a real stop. Fourth, price home installation, your actual electricity tariff, public charging, insurance and required servicing for each quote. If a value is unavailable, leave it unknown rather than inserting a national average as your household bill.

Choose IM6 Premium if its specific car fits your parking space, its boot shape demonstrably carries your load, and its delivered total justifies the wider body and shorter published WLTP range. Choose SEALION 7 Premium if the narrower shell and longer published range suit your routines, you can confirm the current cashback and the actual boot works for your cargo. Neither wins on a three-kilowatt theoretical charge peak. If the stock car, software, warranty document or qualifying delivery date differs from the public specification, revise the comparison before signing. For other local candidates, use the Australian edition and apply the same exact-grade, exact-quote method.

Before you order: four questions that catch bad comparisons

Is the IM6 Premium an 800V car? No. MG Australia lists Premium on a 400V platform with 153 kW maximum DC. The 800V platform and 396 kW peak figure are for Platinum and Performance. Ask for the VIN's charge specification if a seller says otherwise.

Does the SEALION 7 Premium have only 456 km WLTP? No. The hero figure on BYD's page refers to Performance. Its MY26 Premium specification lists 482 km WLTP. Range is a lab claim, not the distance we measured on your route.

Can I still buy the A$54,990 drive-away BYD campaign shown by a search result? The offer we found at that number ended on 30 September 2026. BYD's current October offer is a conditional A$4,000 cashback. Request today's state-specific delivered quote and written eligibility before assuming either number.

Does 665 L against 500 L settle the family-space question? No. Those are each maker's published rear-boot volumes; loading shape and measurement method can differ. Test the same items with the rear seats occupied, then check whether the IM6's 63 mm extra body width causes trouble at home.
