IM6 Platinum vs Model Y Premium RWD: comfort or charging workflow?

Choose Platinum for comfort functions and range you will use. Choose Model Y Premium RWD when its demonstrated charging workflow fits your trips; finish the address-based cash quotes first.

Choose the benefit you will use: Platinum comfort or Tesla’s charging workflow

Shortlist IM6 Platinum when its powered and ventilated seats, heated rear seats, four-wheel steering and declared 555 km WLTP range would improve the family's regular use. Shortlist Model Y Premium RWD when the selected car's 466 km WLTP range covers your needs and Tesla's integrated route and Supercharger workflow is useful on the trips you actually make. Ask for a demonstration with your destinations before treating a charging network as a reason to buy.

Neither a larger published battery nor a familiar charging brand settles this comparison. The MG's air suspension is an extra-cost Platinum option, and the Tesla's advertised vehicle amount is not the amount displayed as drive away in the default NSW configuration. Resolve the car, equipment, charging routine and final address-based quote together. CathayEV has not carried out a common road, ride, charging or ownership-reliability test of these two cars.

This is Australian Platinum, not a UK Long Range or an IM6 Performance

The Australian IM6 Platinum is the rear-drive 100 kWh NCM version with 300 kW and 500 Nm, on 21-inch wheels. Its published capacity is not established here as usable capacity. The current model page and Australian brochure give 555 km WLTP combined. Do not replace that row with the Performance's acceleration, another market's wheel size or a previous Australian range reference. The brochure still refers to the original Australian launch period; confirm the supplied build and specification on the order.

The current Tesla Cash selection is Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive with Pearl White paint, included 19-inch Crossflow wheels, All Black interior and five seats. It shows 466 km WLTP and an estimated October-November 2026 delivery period, which remains an estimate. Long Range AWD, Performance and Model Y L are separate selections. We have not established the selected Premium RWD's battery capacity or a matching current charging session, and do not fill those gaps from a UK Model Y or a different Tesla model.

Two cash references, with different conditions to finish

MG's configurator currently illustrates Platinum at A$67,990 before its A$3,000 cashback and A$64,990 after it. The offer concerns participating dealers' eligible new stock sold and delivered from 1 to 31 October 2026, while stock lasts; fleet, government and rental buyers are excluded. The drive-away scope includes the stated registration, CTP, stamp duty and maximum dealer delivery items, but the amount can vary by location. Do not subtract the A$3,000 a second time.

Tesla shows A$58,900 as the selected vehicle amount. The same default configuration displays A$64,115 drive away with NSW and Personal registration settings. No address was confirmed for that illustration, so A$64,115 is not a national delivered price or a personal quotation. Charging equipment is explicitly not included. An A$800 home charger and A$600 mobile charger appear as unselected accessories; installation and your actual charging provision still need a separate proposal.

MG also describes a A$500 EV accessory bonus, which eligible buyers can elect to take as a price reduction and which its terms permit alongside the IM6 cashback. It has its own qualifying new-stock and October sale-and-delivery conditions. It is not automatically already selected for every customer, and it is not a reason to deduct another A$500 from the headline as though everyone will receive that result. Ask for the chosen benefit, eligibility and delivery deadline in writing.

Get both retailers to complete proposals for your actual address, paint, accessories and delivery date. The two displayed drive-away references are close enough that an option or a different registration basis can matter. We do not declare a fixed nationwide price saving, treat a novated-lease display as a cash price, or turn a monthly repayment into a total purchase cost.

A longer declared range helps only when it improves the route

Platinum's declared 555 km and the selected Tesla's 466 km are both WLTP references for the stated wheel selections. The difference is a useful shortlist signal, not a measured extra distance on your loaded winter motorway trip. A battery-size comparison would be incomplete because the selected Tesla capacity is not verified here and the MG's published 100 kWh label is not a verified usable-energy figure.

Work through the trip you repeat: departure charge, passengers and luggage, weather, arrival reserve and a backup charger. If both cars comfortably cover the routine, the MG's larger declared range may be less important than seating, parking or the charging stop you prefer. If the longer catalogue range would remove a particular stop, check that assumption with conservative planning rather than promising the WLTP figure at highway speed.

Separate IM6’s charging specification from Tesla’s route service

The Australian Platinum sheet lists 11 kW AC, a CCS/Type 2 connection and up to 396 kW DC capability. MG's declared 15.2-minute session is 30-80% on a 350 kW ultra-fast charger under standardised conditions. It is not a 10-80% time and not a result CathayEV measured. Battery condition, temperature, initial charge and the equipment used affect the session; lower-powered chargers take longer.

Tesla's Australian Supercharger information explains that Trip Planner integrates charging stops and considers factors including driving style, elevation, temperature, traffic and stall availability. The app can show charging information and stall status, and plugging in supports automatic charging through the linked account. Those are concrete workflow features to demonstrate, rather than a promise that every preferred stop will be available or that ownership support is better.

We have not established a comparable current Premium RWD charging window, AC rating or sustained charging curve for this selection. A generic Supercharger maximum, or a distance-added example for another Tesla, cannot complete that row. We therefore do not call one of these cars the faster charger. Ask each seller to plan the same journey, show its charger compatibility and payment routine, and identify an alternative stop. MG's rating alone does not establish access, charging speed or tariff at every Tesla or third-party site.

Plan the installation and the overnight task

An 11 kW onboard charger does not mean a home can deliver 11 kW. Ask an installer about the property's supply, circuit, protection, cable and installation costs. Model Y's displayed vehicle amount excludes charging equipment; the current accessory prices are not installed-system quotes. Neither car should be ordered on an assumed overnight time borrowed from another market or model.

Use the energy you normally need to replace, rather than an unnecessary empty-to-full ritual, to discuss the routine. Include interruptions and losses, and check whether a tariff restriction suits your schedule. If you cannot install a charger, repeat the public-charging exercise using the actual stops near work or home. A large battery can reduce visit frequency, but does not make an inconvenient or expensive charging location convenient.

Make Platinum’s comfort functions earn their place

Platinum's selected Australian equipment includes powered front seats, driver memory, front-seat ventilation, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a heat pump, two-zone climate control, a power tailgate, a 360-degree camera and four-wheel steering. Its 20-speaker system and wireless phone projection are further supplied features to try. Check the exact delivered specification rather than accepting the Performance demonstration car as proof.

The brochure and configurator identify air suspension with continuously controlled damping as an optional Platinum upgrade; the current configurator lists A$4,990. It is not included in the A$64,990 reference by default. If that is the feature you want, obtain the upgraded quote and drive the actual suspension choice before drawing a ride conclusion. A generic model headline must not turn an option into standard equipment.

For the Tesla, request a demonstration of the delivered Premium RWD seat, climate, visibility and passenger controls. We have not completed a current grade-specific equipment inventory that would justify calling any of those MG functions absent from the Tesla. The useful question is whether both drivers can set up the seat, demist, choose a destination and find charging information comfortably. No unsupported comfort winner, noise result or distraction score is assigned here.

A parking and luggage trial is more useful than an unmatched volume

MG publishes 4,904 mm length, 1,988 mm body width and 1,669 mm height, with a 665-litre rear luggage reference and a separate 32-litre front compartment. Four-wheel steering deserves a demonstration in the manoeuvre you use, but cannot make the body narrower or create space for doors. Bring the child seats, cases or mobility equipment that normally travel with you, retaining the passenger seats you need.

A current Tesla luggage figure measured on the same basis has not been established in this comparison, so there is no litres-based cargo winner. Try the actual Model Y five-seat configuration, load height, opening, parcel-cover arrangement if supplied and tailgate clearance. If one vehicle needs seats folded to carry your normal load, that practical restriction matters more than a headline total that includes several storage spaces.

China-side evidence

Network features do not establish ownership reliability

The selected Australian Platinum and Premium RWD are the basis of this guide. A UK IM6 Long Range price, a Chinese-market LS6 equipment list or another Model Y version cannot supply the missing Australian terms. The current local sources establish product and sales information, not an independent fault rate, resale forecast or repair-time comparison.

Ask each local provider where the car would be serviced, how a charging fault would be diagnosed and what replacement-transport arrangements apply. Check the supplied warranty and exclusions in the actual contract. A charging network and an ownership-service network are different things; the route-planning features above do not prove a shorter repair wait. For a one-car household, support arrangements should be considered alongside the everyday seat and charging tasks.

Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.

The final decision is a repeated task and a completed proposal

Choose Platinum when its supplied seating functions, parking manoeuvre and declared range help your family enough to justify its completed quote. Choose Model Y Premium RWD when its physical fit and range meet the job and its demonstrated charging workflow is the one you want to use. If both work equally well, compare actual purchase terms, installation costs and local support instead of paying for an unused feature or a name.

This is Australian documentary research checked on 21 October 2026, not a CathayEV road, charging or long-term ownership test. Manufacturer conditions and the exact order remain important. See other Australian buying guides if either car fails the task.

Before ordering Platinum or Premium RWD

Which exact Australian cars are compared?
MG IM6 Platinum 100 kWh NCM RWD on 21-inch wheels and the current Tesla Model Y Premium RWD Cash selection on included 19-inch Crossflow wheels with five seats. These are not IM6 Performance or Model Y Long Range AWD.
Is A$58,900 the Tesla drive-away price?
No. It is the selected vehicle amount. The default unconfirmed NSW Personal configuration shows A$64,115 drive away; a final address-based proposal and charging provision still need confirmation. Charging equipment is not included.
Is air suspension standard on Platinum?
No. The Australian grade sheet and configurator identify air suspension with continuously controlled damping as an extra-cost Platinum option, listed at A$4,990. Do not use Performance equipment to describe the standard Platinum quote.
Does the MG definitely charge faster than this Model Y?
No matched comparison has been established. MG declares a 15.2-minute 30-80% example on specified high-power equipment and conditions. A comparable current Premium RWD session is not verified here, and generic Tesla charging claims cannot fill that gap.
What makes the October MG amount conditional?
The A$64,990 illustration already includes the A$3,000 cashback. Eligible new stock must be sold and delivered from 1 to 31 October 2026 through participating dealers, while stock lasts, with exclusions. The separate A$500 benefit is a qualifying choice, not an automatic extra deduction for every buyer.
