MGS5 EV Essence 62 vs B10 Design LR: which fits one-car family life?

B10 Design LR merits a quote for its identified stock offer and passenger comfort. MGS5 Essence 62 deserves a trial when its narrower body and cabin suit daily family tasks.

Start with the load and the actual delivered quote

Start with B10 Design Long Range if the identified new-car stock offer is available to you, its wider body fits your parking space and you will use the powered passenger seat and front-seat ventilation. MGS5 EV Essence 62 deserves the first appointment when its narrower body, cabin controls and actual family loading arrangement suit your everyday use better, and the October purchase conditions work for your delivery. Both still need the same people, child seats and luggage tried in the car.

Neither choice follows from choosing the largest battery or the fastest peak charging rating. The two selected Australian cars have similar declared rapid-charging windows and different AC limits, while the purchase references concern different offers. For a household using one car for school runs and holidays, a reliable home-charging routine, a workable longer-trip stop and a complete cash quotation are more useful than a promised saving calculated from two headline numbers.

Essence 62 and battery-electric Design LR are the selected cars

The current Australian MGS5 specification identifies Essence 62 with a 62 kWh LFP battery, 150 kW motor, 350 Nm and rear-wheel drive. The smaller Essence 49 uses different power and battery figures. Older MGS5 specifications and an overseas version should not complete the order for this current car. Have model year, battery and equipment recorded on the quote rather than relying on the Essence name alone.

The B10 is Australian MY26 Design LR battery electric, with 67.1 kWh LFP, a 160 kW motor, 240 Nm and rear-wheel drive. It is not the Style battery-electric grade or the 18.8 kWh Hybrid EV. The manufacturer brochure separates those columns; the hybrid's fuel figures, charging limits and smaller luggage reference do not apply to this BEV. A Newcastle listing identifies a specific new Design LR in Light White, while allocation and final contract details still need the dealer's response.

Do not deduct the MG cashback twice

On 21 October 2026, MG's configuration lists Essence 62 at A$46,990 and A$44,990 after the displayed A$2,000 cashback for the NSW private-registration reference. It is not the smaller-battery Essence 49's price. The October conditions require eligible stock from participating dealers to be sold and delivered between 1 and 31 October 2026, while stocks last. The stated drive-away basis includes registration, CTP, stamp duty and the specified dealer-delivery allowance, but location and circumstances can change the total.

The cashback is already reflected in the A$44,990 reference; it is not another A$2,000 to subtract. Exclusions include fleet, government and rental buyers, and the offer is not generally combinable with other promotions. Obtain a written proposal with eligibility, colour, delivery date and all charges clear. A refundable order-fee screen is not a confirmed allocation.

Newcastle's stock 4L030172 is advertised at A$39,990 Drive Away, as a new 2026 B10 Design LR with 10 km shown. That is one identified NSW car, not a guaranteed national price for every B10. Confirm that it remains available and what the amount includes for your address. We have not converted the two references into a universal cash saving or assumed a trade-in benefit on either side.

A family fit test is more useful than the larger boot headline

MG lists a 4,476 mm length and 1,849 mm body width, while the B10 brochure gives 4,515 mm and 1,885 mm excluding mirrors. The MG is the narrower published body, which is a reason to try it in a tight garage. It does not establish which door will open far enough beside your wall or whether a particular child seat can be secured without moving the driver's seat. Check those tasks in the actual parking space if possible.

The luggage references are 453 litres with seats in place for MGS5 and 490 litres behind the second row for the B10 BEV. We have not established a common packing method, so the numerical difference is not our measured capacity advantage. Bring the same pram, travel bags or mobility equipment and retain the seats you need. Then check the tailgate's opening height, cable storage and access to the items you would retrieve during a journey. Neither a folded-seat maximum nor a larger screen answers those questions.

B10 adds passenger-seat adjustment and ventilation

Both selected grades include heated front seats and a powered tailgate in their Australian specifications. MG lists a six-way powered driver's seat with lumbar support, but its front passenger seat has four-way manual adjustment. B10 Design LR adds powered adjustment for both front seats and front-seat ventilation. Those are tangible reasons to compare the cabins if two people share driving and passenger duties or you regularly park in the sun. They are not a substitute for trying the actual seating position.

MG's current specification includes a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen. B10 Design LR also has a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging and a 360-degree camera, with a 14.6-inch central screen and twelve-speaker audio. A bigger display or speaker count does not establish easier operation or better sound. Pair your phone, operate the climate controls and demonstrate the parking view while stationary. Assistance and camera systems support the driver; they do not make either car autonomous.

AC supply can matter more than a small DC headline difference

MGS5 Essence 62 lists 6.6 kW AC and a 150 kW maximum DC rating. Its brochure gives an estimated 19.3 minutes from 30 to 80% on the stated CCS public-charging test at 25C. B10 Design LR lists 11 kW AC, up to 168 kW DC and approximately 20 minutes from 30 to 80%. These are manufacturer references, not a shared charging test; neither a higher peak nor a fraction of a minute establishes the stop you will experience.

For a regular single-phase home installation, the B10's 11 kW capability does not mean it will necessarily receive 11 kW. Ask an electrician to assess the available supply, circuit and installation, and confirm the cables and equipment supplied with the car. We have not calculated full-charge times from nominal battery sizes. For longer journeys, check the actual chargers, access, payment and an alternative stop on the route. Battery temperature, state of charge, charger output and power sharing can change the result in either car.

Use the combined WLTP values as planning references

The current Australian documents declare 450 km combined WLTP for Essence 62 and up to 434 km combined WLTP for B10 Design LR. The B10's larger nominal battery therefore does not, by itself, give it the larger declared range in this pairing. Neither result guarantees a loaded winter motorway trip, and a different NEDC headline is not used to improve either side.

Map the longest day you need the family car to cover, add a reserve and decide where a charge would fit. If both cover ordinary weekdays easily and charge at home, cabin fit and the complete purchase proposal may matter more than the catalogue difference. If a regular journey is close to the available margin, investigate the exact car's real-world evidence for that route and conditions. We have not performed a paired range test or estimated an annual electricity saving from the nominal capacities.

Choose the better household routine, then secure the exact car

B10 Design LR is the first quotation when the identified stock car is available, the actual family load fits and its passenger-seat adjustment and ventilation have value for you. MGS5 Essence 62 is the first demonstration when the narrower body or its controls better suit daily use, and its conditional delivered price is acceptable. Do not choose either because an overseas review describes a different battery, grade or earlier specification.

This comparison uses Australian documents and purchase references checked on 21 October 2026. It is not a CathayEV road test, loading test or warranty-and-reliability ranking. Ask for the exact battery, model year, included equipment, delivery and cash total in writing; add insurance, servicing and charging installation before committing. A one-car family should also establish how local servicing and breakdown support would work for its situation. See other Australian buying guides for alternatives if these exact proposals do not meet your requirements.

Questions before buying either family EV

Is this the older MGS5 with different power figures?
The selected current Australian Essence 62 is specified with a 62 kWh LFP battery and 150 kW motor. Confirm that exact specification on the order; older versions and Essence 49 figures are not substituted.
Does A$44,990 include another cashback to subtract?
No. The displayed Essence 62 reference already reflects A$2,000 cashback. Eligibility, participating dealer, location and the October sold-and-delivered deadline still apply.
Is the A$39,990 B10 price available everywhere?
It is an identified Newcastle NSW new-stock advert for 4L030172, not a national guarantee. Confirm availability, registration, delivery and the total for your address before comparing it with the MG proposal.
Will the B10 always charge faster because it lists 11 kW AC?
No. The available supply and installation determine what it can receive. Its 11 kW rating and the MG 6.6 kW rating do not establish full-session times or the output of an ordinary home connection.
Which should a one-car family try first?
Try B10 Design LR first if the stock proposal, cabin fit and powered passenger seat and ventilation appeal. Try MGS5 Essence 62 first if its narrower body or controls better solve daily tasks. Load the same items and compare complete delivered quotes before choosing.
