New G6 Long Range vs IONIQ 5 MY27 84 RWD: charging and family equipment

Compare the current Australian G6 LFP Long Range and base MY27 Hyundai, with exact charging references, wheel-specific range and complete-price questions.

Choose the charging plan and actual equipment before the headline peak

Try New G6 RWD Long Range first if frequent public rapid charging is a central part of the family week and you can use infrastructure appropriate to its current charging system. Its 12-minute declaration is worth investigating, but a site that says fast charging is not proof that the actual session will achieve it.

Try base MY27 IONIQ 5 first if its actual cabin, controls and route plan work better for the family and justify the completed proposal. Its current Australian base specification is an 84 kWh rear-drive car, with a different range and charging reference from older 63 kWh or Dynamiq material.

These are two current Australian rear-drive BEVs, not a replay of a 2025 G6 road test. The purchase turns on useful equipment, the stop you actually make and a complete same-state quotation. Neither battery size nor a quoted peak establishes the better family car by itself.

New G6 80.8 LFP and base MY27 are the two selections

XPENG's current Australian configurator identifies RWD Long Range with an 80.8 kWh gross LFP battery, 218 kW motor and standard 20-inch wheels. The national New G6 offer explicitly covers the current Long Range. An older 87.5 kWh NMC car with a 280 kW charging figure is a different selection, even when a dealer still offers one.

Hyundai's current MY27 national specification identifies the base IONIQ 5 column as 84 kWh, 168 kW RWD on 19-inch wheels. Elite and Premium N Line have separate columns. A current Geelong dealer offer separately identifies base 168 kW 84 kWh RWD new stock and its purchase/delivery conditions.

No individual car was inspected or allocated here. Ask the proposals to name build month, model year, battery, trim, wheels, paint and handover. XPENG's configurator warns that configuration can vary with production month; the actual vehicle documentation must resolve the equipment.

The price displays do not form a matched household saving

The XPENG Long Range card displays A$63,800, while a separate estimated configured footer displays A$64,800. We have not reconciled that presentation into a complete driveaway invoice with the actual state, paint and charges. Do not choose the lower number and subtract it from a dealer's differently scoped total.

Blood Hyundai's A$70,990 driveaway offer applies to base 168 kW 84 kWh RWD new stock without added options, purchased and delivered from 1 October to 31 December 2026, while stock lasts. It excludes fleet, government and rental buyers and combination offers. The dealer is in Geelong, Victoria; obtain the actual registration and purchase assumptions for both cars.

XPENG's current finance campaign covers eligible new and demonstrator New G6 models and excludes vehicles manufactured before 1 May 2026. Its applications and settlements must meet the stated December deadline and other conditions. A finance campaign establishes neither a cash saving nor an allocated car. Compare complete cash proposals first, then finance deposits, payments, fees and final obligations separately.

Twelve and eighteen minutes need the charger context

The exact current New G6 Long Range card declares up to 451 kW DC and 12 minutes from 10 to 80%. It also specifies 11 kW AC and a CCS2 port. XPENG qualifies the claim by charger type, battery state and environmental conditions; its national model page describes internal testing. Peak power is not sustained session power.

Hyundai's base MY27 sheet declares 400/800 V charger compatibility and approximately 18 minutes from 10 to 80% at a 350 kW charger. It separately gives approximately 76 minutes at 50 kW. That second example matters when a journey uses lower-powered infrastructure: the car's capability cannot upgrade the charger.

Both rapid references use 10-80%, but different battery declarations, equipment and conditions remain. This is not a shared six-minute saving measured at one station. Check an actual route, arrival state, battery preparation, site capability and alternative stop before valuing the headline.

Parked time can matter more than the maximum power

At home or work, compare the hours the car is already parked and what the actual supply can deliver. XPENG gives a 5-100% AC reference, while Hyundai uses 10-100%; do not compare the times as though they cover the same battery interval. An installer assessment should identify supply, permissions, protections and the full installation cost.

For public charging, map a normal week and the unavoidable long journey. Include queues, a payment method and a fallback you can reach with a comfortable reserve. A quicker claimed top-up at a distant station may be less convenient than a longer stop beside something you already need to do.

Hyundai lists battery conditioning in the base MY27 specification. Have both retailers demonstrate the actual preparation and route-planning controls; do not assume a warm battery simply because a vehicle is plugged into a powerful charger. No common curve or timed charge was measured here.

Use the exact wheel and battery references

XPENG's current Long Range R20 card declares 525 km combined WLTP. Hyundai's base MY27 19-inch column declares 570 km combined WLTP. Keep those configurations attached to the values. Older G6 570 km NMC figures, the Standard Range card and another Hyundai grade do not describe this pair.

Neither result guarantees a loaded highway distance in poor weather. Identify the longest repeat journey, destination charging and arrival margin. Do not divide gross battery capacity by range to claim measured electricity purchased: capacity basis, charging losses and real use have not been harmonised.

Use actual kilometres, home/public tariffs, electricity purchased, insurance and servicing when comparing ownership. No matched depreciation or repair-cost dataset proves a payback period or a guaranteed annual saving from either displayed price.

Try the family tasks with the actual standard equipment

The G6 exact Long Range card lists a 15.6-inch central screen, 10.25-inch driver display, CarPlay/Android Auto and parking assistance features. The national page also illustrates seating functions and materials with market/option qualifications. Have the retailer identify what is fitted to the actual production month rather than pricing every photograph as standard.

The selected Hyundai is base MY27. Use its column for controls, parking view and convenience features; Elite or Premium N Line photographs do not upgrade the order. Try phone connection, climate adjustment and charging settings while safely parked, with the same user doing the same tasks in both cars.

XPENG declares 571 litres of rear storage; Hyundai declares 520 litres rear VDA and a separate 57-litre front compartment. Those are not a common luggage test or a reason to add compartments into one larger opening. Bring the same pushchair, bags and child restraints, keep the passenger seats you need and check that the cover and tailgate close.

Confirm what the dealer will support after delivery

Take comparable drives before judging seating, ride and noise. Manufacturer assistance functions are supervised driver support; they do not establish a common safety or crash result. Ask how the systems indicate availability and cancel, without provoking emergency interventions.

Obtain current vehicle and battery warranty, maintenance requirements, workshop location and assistance arrangements for the exact builds. A brand's size or a long feature list does not establish immediate parts availability. This comparison contains no matched sample of repair delays, failures or resale outcomes.

If a connected feature is essential, confirm the supported phone, subscription period and ongoing cost. Its presence in a menu or a general model description is not evidence that every service is included for your whole ownership.

Choose the stop and cabin that work in the same real week

Choose New G6 Long Range first when its actual charging opportunities and production-specific equipment make a useful difference, the family load fits and the complete proposal is attractive. Confirm the current LFP car; an older run-out vehicle is not interchangeable with the new charging claim.

Choose base MY27 IONIQ 5 first when its actual cabin and equipment, current 84 kWh route plan and completed quotation suit the household better. If neither passes the family or charging task, expand the Australian shortlist. The decision remains open until both actual cars and complete same-state proposals are identified.

Current Australian documents, without a new twin test

This is documentary research from Australian manufacturer and named dealer sources retrieved on 19 October 2026 UTC. The current G6 Long Range card and exact base MY27 technical column control the facts. A 2025 Australian review establishes Hyundai as a local G6 rival; its older NMC specification, prices and driving impressions are not adopted as current New G6 evidence.

No CathayEV road, charging, packing, winter-range, reliability or individual-stock inspection was conducted. The separate displayed prices, test conditions, wheel references and luggage methods remain explicit. Catalogue data and editorial judgement help choose a demonstration; they do not promise an achieved charging time, saving or delivery.

Questions before ordering these Australian rear-drive SUVs

Is this the older G6 Long Range with an 87.5 kWh NMC battery?
No. The selected current Australian New G6 Long Range card specifies 80.8 kWh gross LFP, 218 kW RWD and 20-inch wheels. Older review and run-out specifications are separate.
Does 12 versus 18 minutes prove six minutes saved?
No common session was measured. These are separate 10-80% manufacturer declarations on different batteries and conditions, and actual chargers and preparation affect the stop.
Is the Hyundai the old 63 kWh base model?
The current Australian MY27 base column specifies 84 kWh, 168 kW RWD and 19-inch wheels. It is not an older Dynamiq or the current Elite/Premium N Line.
Can A$63,800 and A$70,990 be subtracted as my saving?
Not as a matched household saving. The G6 card and estimated footer are unresolved to a full driveaway proposal, while Hyundai is a dated Geelong VIC dealer offer. Obtain both complete same-state quotations.
