Freelander says export-market versions of its first SUV will be plug-in hybrids, while the China-market vehicle is a range extender. New Zealand is named for a 2027 right-hand-drive rollout, but local pricing and specifications remain unannounced.
EVs and Beyond reported on October 20 that the export Freelander 8 uses a 2.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine and motors on both axles: a plug-in hybrid with the engine in the drivetrain. The China-market vehicle is a range-extender, using its petrol engine only as a generator. These are different powertrains.
Australia and New Zealand are named in phase two of the right-hand-drive rollout, after UAE deliveries begin. Freelander previously confirmed a 2027 NZ brand launch, but no NZ arrival month, price or final specification has been announced.
The presentation quoted 34.12kWh and 110km WLTC for the international model, but its chief engineer said those figures apply to a left-hand-drive vehicle. They are not confirmed NZ specifications; charging, power, dimensions and seating are also pending.
For an NZ buyer, do not use China-market specifications to estimate local range or ownership costs. Evidence supports an export PHEV and an NZ launch plan, not an NZ price, order date, final range or equipment list. Wait for the local release to compare like-for-like.
