Dolphin Essential vs Jolion Lux Hybrid: Australian seats, boot and charging
Dolphin if its cabin and load fit with usable charging; Jolion Lux Hybrid for useful heated seating and a petrol routine. Test the real boot and close exact driveaway quotes.
The verdict
Try Dolphin Essential first if its five-seat cabin and normal-seat luggage space fit the household and you can sustain a useful charging routine. Try Jolion Lux Hybrid first if petrol refuelling, its heated front seats and actual cabin access work better for your occupants. Do not assume the SUV carries more luggage: the selected Jolion hybrid has a smaller declared boot than the Dolphin. Test the same load and close both complete driveaway quotes before choosing.
Buy the BYD Dolphin Essential if
The actual Essential cabin and load fit, and regular charging is workable for the household.
Buy the GWM Haval Jolion Lux Hybrid if
The actual Lux Hybrid access and heated seating suit the occupants, with petrol refuelling preferred.
Start with the occupants and luggage that the SUV label cannot measure
Try Dolphin Essential first if its five-seat cabin and normal-seat luggage space fit the household and you can sustain a useful charging routine. Try Jolion Lux Hybrid first if petrol refuelling, its heated front seats and actual cabin access work better for your occupants. Do not assume the SUV carries more luggage: the selected Jolion hybrid has a smaller declared boot than the Dolphin. Test the same load and close both complete driveaway quotes before choosing.
The useful question is how these particular cars work for the people and objects you move. A taller body is not a measurement of the seat cushion, door opening or ease of fastening a child restraint. A bigger-looking SUV also does not establish a larger boot once the selected hybrid drivetrain and seating arrangement are considered.
Bring the regular passengers, restraints and bulky items to both demonstrations. If one fails that trial, an attractive equipment list or unconfirmed price should not rescue it. Only after the practical fit works should you decide whether charging or petrol refuelling is the routine you can maintain. We have not conducted a joint drive, loading trial or energy-use test.
Essential is the 70 kW EV; Lux Hybrid is not the petrol Jolion
The Australian Dolphin Essential is the front-drive BEV with a 44.9 kWh Blade LFP battery and 70 kW motor. Its current brochure gives 180 Nm and 340 km combined WLTP. The product page also presents Premium’s much higher output and different range prominently, but qualifies those hero figures as Premium-only. They must not describe an Essential order.
The selected GWM is Jolion Lux Hybrid: a non-plug 1.5-litre hybrid with DHT and two-wheel drive. Its Australian table declares 140 kW and 375 Nm combined. These are system references, not values created by adding engine and motor peaks. Petrol Lux, Premium Hybrid and Vanta Hybrid have their own equipment columns.
Both current Australian sites provide model, configuration and test-drive routes. Ask for the exact build, grade, colour and supplied equipment on the order. A brochure filename or an April publication date does not establish the delivered model year, allocation or arrival date of the car you will receive.

345 litres and 255 litres justify testing the hatch first for bulky loads
Dolphin declares 345 litres with seats in use and 1,310 with the rear seats folded. The current Jolion brochure gives 255/916 litres for its hybrid columns, including Lux Hybrid. The petrol Jolion’s different boot figures cannot complete this comparison. Those declared numbers make the Dolphin a reasonable first loading demonstration, but do not prove ninety more useful litres for every household.
We have not established a shared measurement method, floor arrangement or opening size. Load the same pram, cases or work gear with every required passenger seat available. If a bag only fits when a seat needed by a passenger is folded, the maximum volume has not solved that journey. Check access to the charging cable or emergency equipment after everything is loaded.
Dolphin’s sheet gives 4,290 mm length and 1,770 mm width. The selected Jolion hybrid is 4,470 mm long and 1,898 mm wide. The larger published body does not demonstrate better rear accommodation, and a body-width figure is not a mirror-inclusive garage clearance. Try doors, tailgate and passenger access in the actual parking space. Follow the manuals when installing restraints rather than relying on a five-seat label.

Lux Hybrid’s heated seats are real; Essential’s Premium pictures are not its order
The selected Jolion Lux Hybrid column includes heated front seats, a six-way electric driver’s seat, manual four-way front-passenger adjustment and dual-zone climate control with rear vents. It also lists a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and six-speaker audio. Those are specific reasons to try Lux Hybrid when comfort equipment matters.
Essential’s current column lists a six-way electric driver adjustment and a 12.8-inch centre screen. The heated front seats, panoramic glass roof and wireless phone charger belong to Premium, so do not assign them to Essential from the general cabin presentation. Nor do we add Jolion Vanta’s panoramic roof, HUD or wireless charger to Lux Hybrid.
If two adults share the car, repeat the posture and control adjustment for both. With the car stationary, connect the real phone, change climate settings and try the common navigation tasks. Heating can be useful in the right conditions, but neither it nor screen size measures seat support, ride comfort, sound quality or ease of use. The right choice is the cabin that works for the occupants, not the one assembled from a higher grade’s photographs.

Front parking sensors are a specific difference to demonstrate
Dolphin Essential’s brochure lists a 360-degree view monitor, two front parking sensors and three rear sensors. Jolion Lux Hybrid lists a 360-degree camera and four rear sensors, with no front parking sensors in that column. The extra front sensors of another Jolion grade do not belong to this Lux Hybrid order.
That distinction may matter in a tight garage or with objects close to the front bumper. Demonstrate coverage and alerts on the actual cars; neither a camera label nor the number of sensors guarantees that every obstacle is detected. Check visibility directly and leave room for people to move around the car.
Both selected documents list adaptive cruise and other assistance functions. Have the retailer explain what is fitted, how it is activated and its limits. No assistant replaces the driver, and we have not established a matched crash-test or braking result for the two supplied configurations. Install the actual child restraints according to the manuals and confirm access to belts and anchors.

An EV charging plan and a non-plug hybrid fuel routine are different commitments
Essential lists Type 2 AC and CCS2 DC, with a maximum 60 kW DC reference. The brochure does not establish its maximum AC acceptance here, so we do not fill that field with a wallbox rating. The product page’s 80 kW and 29-minute 30-80% statement is expressly Premium-only; it does not establish an Essential session time.
For home charging, have the supply, circuit, protection, cable route and permissions assessed. Confirm the equipment and cable supplied with the order. For public charging, identify access, tariffs, compatible stations and an alternative. A nearby fast charger is not proof of availability, and a car’s peak rating does not specify the power delivered throughout a stop.
Jolion Lux Hybrid does not require external traction-battery charging. Its combination of petrol and hybrid energy management may suit a household that cannot organise habitual charging or prefers to keep refuelling. That is a practical distinction, not a guarantee of lower running cost or longer life. Ask what maintenance and fuel the exact vehicle needs rather than treating non-plug hybrid as an EV that never needs energy.

340 km WLTP and 4.8 L/100 km cannot be subtracted into a saving
Essential declares 340 km combined WLTP. Other published test-cycle references do not add usable distance to this WLTP figure. Neither number guarantees a motorway leg with passengers, luggage and climate control. Plan representative trips with a sensible reserve and a compatible alternative charging point.
Jolion’s hybrid column gives 4.8 L/100 km under ADR81/02 testing, with the brochure warning that laboratory results do not reflect every real-world condition. We do not compare litres directly with an EV’s range or create a dollar saving using an assumed electricity tariff. Peak system output also does not establish measured acceleration or useful loaded performance.
A household budget needs its own kilometres, energy prices, charging losses, insurance, servicing and complete purchase proposal. For the hybrid, distinguish the fuel use you can reasonably expect from the laboratory line. For the EV, include any installation and public-charger fees actually required. We have not closed a matched route-cost test or a payback period.
Close the Lux Hybrid quote without borrowing the petrol headline
GWM’s page shows a driveaway-from A$23,990 offer for the 1.5-litre turbo petrol entry model, for eligible private buyers in Victoria with its stated October conditions. That is not a confirmed Lux Hybrid price. Do not choose the hybrid believing that the general page’s lowest displayed number buys the selected grade.
We have not closed equivalent current personalised driveaway proposals for Lux Hybrid and Essential. Obtain both for the same state and date, with paint, statutory charges, delivery, accessories and any charging installation separated. Value the trade-in independently. For finance, compare deposit, term, fees, insurance, any final payment and total payable, not a monthly number without its conditions.
Progress with Essential if the actual cabin and regular load fit and habitual charging is workable. Progress with Lux Hybrid if its seat heating, access and petrol routine suit the household and the real boot is sufficient. This documentary comparison uses Australian sources checked on 20 October 2026; it is not a joint road, charging or loading test. If neither passes the family trial, see other buying guides.

Questions before the family demonstration
- Does the Jolion SUV automatically have the larger boot?
- The selected hybrid brochure gives 255/916 litres, while Dolphin gives 345/1,310 according to rear-seat use. Those are not shared measurements. Test the same luggage with all required passenger seats available rather than assuming the SUV badge settles it.
- Does Dolphin Essential have Premium’s heating and rapid-charge claim?
- No. Essential is the 44.9 kWh, 70 kW selection with up to 60 kW DC. Premium’s heated front seats, glass roof, wireless charger and the page’s 80 kW/29-minute statement do not complete an Essential order.
- Does Jolion Lux Hybrid have front parking sensors?
- The selected column gives a 360-degree camera and four rear sensors, but no front parking sensors. Dolphin Essential lists two front and three rear sensors with its 360-degree monitor. Demonstrate the actual coverage rather than assuming another grade’s equipment.
- Is A$23,990 the Lux Hybrid driveaway price?
- The low headline on the general GWM page is scoped to an entry turbo petrol model and its buyer/location/offer conditions. It is not the selected Lux Hybrid quotation. Obtain the actual hybrid proposal for your state and build.
- Can the laboratory figures establish which will cost less?
- No. Essential’s 340 km WLTP range and Jolion’s 4.8 L/100 km ADR laboratory figure use different measures. A useful budget needs actual purchase proposals, route consumption and energy, insurance, servicing and installation costs.
