BYD Dolphin vs Kia Picanto GT-Line: Australian city-car choice

Dolphin Essential or MY27 Picanto GT-Line automatic? Compare Australian driveaway offers, parking dimensions, occupied luggage and the charging routine before choosing a city hatch.

Choose the parking space and charging routine first

The Picanto GT-Line automatic is the more promising starting point if a short parking space sets the limit or you need a runabout without finding a charging stop. The Dolphin Essential deserves the second visit if you can charge reliably and have room for its larger published dimensions. It offers petrol-free driving; that alone does not prove a lower total ownership cost or that your passengers and luggage will fit better.

For Australian buyers comparing these advertised entry points, the useful question is what the car must do on an ordinary weekday. Measure the parking space, identify a usable charging location and take your normal load to both cars. A low advertised price will not fix a blocked door, an inaccessible charge port or a boot that cannot carry what you need.

Compare the actual Australian automatic cars

This is the current Australian Dolphin Essential battery-electric hatch, using the Essential column of BYD’s 2025 specification sheet, against the Picanto GT-Line with four-speed automatic and 1.2-litre MPI petrol engine in Kia’s MY27 material. Both appear on current Australian model and offer pages checked on 22 October 2026. A model-year label does not guarantee the build date or registration year of a dealer’s supplied car.

The Australian comparison result bringing these models together defaults to a Picanto Sport manual. We select the GT-Line automatic because this buyer wants an automatic city car. Its price, wheels and transmission must not be borrowed from that manual result. Confirm the actual model year, build, colour, equipment and delivery allocation on each proposal.

The driveaway references have different conditions

BYD advertises Dolphin Essential promotional driveaway pricing of A$28,888. Orders must be placed from 15 September to 15 December 2026 and delivery is due by 31 December 2026. Metallic paint costs extra; demonstrators and transactions combined with other promotional offers or discounts are excluded. Allocation is subject to availability, and BYD says eligibility is not guaranteed until delivery. This is not a promise that a particular car will arrive before the deadline.

Kia lists the GT-Line automatic from an estimated A$25,190 driveaway, valid until 31 October 2026 at participating dealers for private buyers. Its stated inclusions are 12 months’ registration, an estimated CTP insurance amount for a private buyer with a good driving record, stamp duty, statutory charges and dealer delivery. Individual circumstances can change the price.

Both are advertised driveaway references, rather than completed quotations for the same buyer and location. Request itemised cash proposals with the same registration address, paint choice and delivery assumptions; confirm GST, registration, CTP, duty and delivery inclusions. Keep BYD’s eligibility and delivery deadline attached to its number. Neither a finance instalment nor a lease discount has been used to lower the cash reference here.

A smaller footprint matters before equipment lists

BYD lists the Dolphin at 4,290 mm long and 1,770 mm wide; Kia lists the Picanto at 3,595 mm and 1,595 mm. The Picanto is 695 mm shorter using those published overall lengths. That makes it worth trying first where length is the constraint, especially if the car must leave room for a gate or pedestrian passage. These are published dimensions, not our parking measurements.

Do not treat the width labels as confirmed mirror-to-mirror clearance. Measure the actual mirrors in the position you will use, the approach to the bay and the room needed to open the doors. Try reaching the boot and any charging connection while parked. A car that clears the entrance but prevents a passenger getting out has not passed the test. We have not established an equivalent measured turning test or driven either car through your access route.

Keep the people in place when you try the bags

BYD publishes 345 litres before folding and 1,310 litres folded. Kia specifies 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres down, using VDA measurement. A common cargo-measurement method has not been established for BYD’s figures, so this is not a measured luggage-capacity ranking. Nor does a five-seat label establish adult comfort or child-restraint fit.

Set both front seats for their actual occupants. Keep every necessary rear seat available, then load the same shopping, pram or work bag and close the tailgate. If a regular passenger must give up their seat for the load to fit, the folded-seat maximum has not answered the occupied-car question. Check permitted restraint positions against the supplied car’s handbook where relevant. Consider the larger Dolphin if its demonstrated layout solves a real passenger or load problem, rather than because a headline litre number looks better.

Electric running needs somewhere dependable to plug in

The Essential specification lists a 44.9 kWh battery and 340 km WLTP combined range. BYD’s 427 km WLTP and 150 kW model-page headlines are explicitly Premium figures and do not describe this Essential. Do not substitute a figure from another test cycle for this WLTP reference, or treat the laboratory result as a road-trip promise.

For the Dolphin, identify a charger you can use repeatedly, when you can use it and how the car will be parked. At home, have a qualified installer assess the proposed supply and installation. For shared or public charging, check access rules, parking limits, availability and the actual tariff. A convenient charger on a map does not establish an available overnight space.

The petrol Picanto removes the external charging task, but still needs fuel stops and paid fuel. This article does not establish an electricity-price advantage, a petrol bill or a break-even date. If public charging becomes a repeated detour, that can change the choice even when the EV fits the garage. If dependable charging becomes available, revisit the Dolphin using your actual travel pattern.

Budget for the supplied car and any installation

Obtain the service schedule, written vehicle and battery warranty terms where applicable, and an insurance quote for each exact derivative. Ask what equipment is included with the Dolphin and price any charging installation separately. Confirm the expected handover date: a campaign depending on delivery is different from an unconditional price available whenever the car arrives.

A Chinese-market specification, an overseas trim name or another Dolphin battery version does not establish the equipment on the Australian Essential offered to you. Equally, do not transfer a manual Picanto’s figures or an older GT-Line specification into a MY27 automatic order. Keep the supplied-car equipment list with the quotation. We have no matched ownership-cost forecast, reliability comparison or personal insurance premium for these cars.

Turn the shortlist into two useful demonstrations

This is Australian document and offer research checked on 22 October 2026, not our road test or a measured comfort assessment. The recommendation gives the Picanto priority for a constrained parking task and the Dolphin a place where reliable charging and a demonstrated passenger/load layout make electric running useful. Neither car receives an unqualified luggage, safety, reliability or running-cost win.

Use the same people, objects, parking measurements and cash-quote assumptions for both visits. If both fit and charging works, decide whether the Dolphin’s actual layout and electric operation justify its quoted cost to you. If charging or access fails, the Picanto remains a practical petrol alternative. For wider local context, read our Australian Dolphin buyer’s guide. For a larger petrol hatch serving a different parking envelope, see Dolphin Essential versus Mazda3 G20 Pure hatch; its price and specification do not apply to this Kia.

Questions before ordering either city hatch

Is this the cheapest manual Picanto?
No. This comparison selects the Australian MY27 GT-Line with four-speed automatic. The Sport manual shown by some comparison defaults is a different derivative and price.
Does the Dolphin Essential have 427 km WLTP range?
No. The Australian Essential sheet lists 340 km WLTP combined with a 44.9 kWh battery. The model-page 427 km WLTP and 150 kW headlines are Premium figures; Other test-cycle figures must not be relabelled as WLTP.
Will the Picanto definitely fit my garage?
Its published length is 3,595 mm versus Dolphin’s 4,290 mm, but that does not prove your entrance, mirrors, doors and walking space work. Measure and try the actual car.
Does 345 litres prove the Dolphin carries more with passengers?
Not established here. Kia specifies 255 litres VDA with seats up, while a shared method for BYD’s 345 litres is unconfirmed. Keep necessary seats available and try the same load.
Can I rely on A$28,888 and A$25,190 as final cash quotes?
They are dated advertised driveaway references with different terms. BYD’s Essential campaign needs eligible ordering and delivery; Kia’s GT-Line automatic amount is an estimate valid to 31 October 2026. Obtain itemised proposals for your actual cars and address.
