Dolphin Essential vs Inster Standard Range: five seats or a smaller footprint?

Dolphin starts lower and seats five; Inster offers a much smaller body and flexible rear seating for four. Compare actual Australian offers, selected specifications and delivery conditions.

Start with Dolphin for five seats and value; pay for Inster when size solves a daily problem

Choose the BYD Dolphin Essential first if you need a fifth seat, have dependable charging and want to keep the purchase budget down. Put the Hyundai Inster Standard Range first if four seats are enough and a genuinely smaller car would make your everyday parking or narrow driveway easier. The Hyundai premium buys a different shape and flexible rear seating; it does not buy the longer published driving range in this comparison.

The checked Australian offers are A$28,888 driveaway for Dolphin and A$35,990 driveaway for Inster, a conditional A$7,102 difference. We would need a concrete benefit from the Hyundai to spend it. Measure the parking bay, count the passengers you actually carry and try the rear seats with your luggage. If both cars do those jobs equally well, the Dolphin leaves more money for charging installation, insurance and the rest of ownership. If the Dolphin is awkward where you park every day, a smaller vehicle can be worth more than its battery size suggests.

Compare these Australian offers, with their different delivery conditions

The selected BYD is Dolphin Essential, not Dolphin Premium, Dolphin Surf or Atto 1. BYD's campaign takes eligible retail orders from 15 September to 15 December 2026, with delivery by 31 December. Metallic paint costs extra. Demonstrators and additional promotional discounts are excluded, and allocation or delivery within the campaign is not guaranteed. Do not subtract the separate novated-lease percentage from this driveaway price.

The Inster offer published by Geissler Hyundai in Goulburn, NSW identifies Standard Range, 71.1 kW, 42.0 kWh and front-wheel drive. Its A$35,990 driveaway figure covers eligible new stock without added options, purchased and delivered from 1 October to 31 December 2026 through participating dealers. Fleet, government and rental buyers are excluded, as is combining it with other offers. Ask your chosen dealer for the total against your postcode and exact car. An advertised participating-dealer offer is not a reserved vehicle or a guarantee that your colour is available.

Five seats and a larger body versus four seats in a smaller package

The Australian Dolphin specification lists five seats, a 44.9 kWh battery for Essential and body dimensions of 4,290 mm long by 1,770 mm wide. Hyundai's current-linked Australian August 2026 specification gives Standard Range 3,825 mm by 1,610 mm; its matching brochure describes a four-seat cabin. The Inster is therefore 465 mm shorter and 160 mm narrower on these body dimensions. Mirror width, door opening and clearance still need checking in your own space.

The Hyundai offer does not identify the stock's build date or model year. These technical references are explicitly the Australian MY26 August documents currently linked by Hyundai, not a claim to have inspected every offered vehicle or confirmed a MY27 change. Match the build details, seating and equipment to the written order before paying. Overseas five-seat versions, Cross equipment and the 49 kWh battery do not fill gaps in the selected Standard Range specification.

The fifth passenger is a deciding requirement, not a tie-breaker

If you regularly carry five people, the Inster's four-seat layout ends the comparison. Do not plan to squeeze somebody between its two rear places. The Dolphin has the required seating capacity, but that alone does not prove that your three rear passengers or child restraints fit comfortably. Bring the restraints and check access, belt buckles and the position of the front occupants.

For a couple or a household carrying no more than four, the Hyundai deserves a proper cabin demonstration. The August specification lists independently split sliding and folding rear-seat adjustment. Move the seats between the positions you would actually use, with passengers and bags together: extra legroom and extra boot room cannot both occupy the same space. Also avoid the brochure photograph trap. Flat-folding front-seat adjustment is marked for Cross, not Standard Range. We would not buy the cheaper Inster assuming it provides that particular camping or long-item arrangement.

The published ranges are close; neither guarantees your country trip

Essential is listed at 340 km combined WLTP in BYD's Australian table; the Hyundai Standard Range reference is 327 km. That 13 km paper difference is too small to make a dependable prediction about which reaches a particular destination with more charge. Both are laboratory references, rather than our measurements. Highway speed, temperature, passengers, luggage, battery condition and climate control change the outcome.

For ordinary home-charged commuting, calculate the distance between dependable charging opportunities and keep a useful reserve. For a country trip, check compatible chargers, access hours and a backup before choosing either car. The smaller Hyundai is not automatically restricted to the city, and the Dolphin's larger battery does not remove route planning. If regular long-distance travel is the main job, compare a longer-range alternative as well; our Australian Dolphin versus MG4 Urban 54 guide addresses that different purchase question.

Compare an actual stop, not the largest charging number

The Dolphin Essential table lists Type 2 AC and CCS2 DC, with 60 kW for the Standard Range DC entry. Hyundai's August sheet lists Type 2, CCS Combo 2 and a 10.5 kW onboard AC charger. It publishes 30 minutes from 10 to 80% using its 120 kW fast-charging reference, and 58 minutes over that window at 50 kW. Those are manufacturer document conditions, not a charging session we reproduced or a promise at every public charger.

We have no equivalent Essential session under matched starting charge, battery temperature and charger conditions. We therefore do not declare a minute-for-minute winner or assume a higher stated power halves the stop. At home, the Inster's AC rating is only useful if the electrical supply and installation can deliver it; an ordinary household connection does not become a 10.5 kW supply because the car supports that figure. Get an electrician's installation quote and confirm the cable and equipment included with each car. A dependable overnight routine matters more than a theoretical peak you seldom use.

Spend the premium on a problem you can identify

The A$7,102 offer difference is our subtraction of the two conditional driveaway figures. It is not a saving guaranteed for every postcode, paint choice or delivery date. We have not calculated an electricity payback: no shared measured consumption, household tariff, annual distance or installation cost has been established for your use. Paying more for the Inster cannot be justified here by a claim that it will automatically save that amount in running costs.

Instead, compare insurance against the actual variants, charging installation, service pricing and the final finance proposal if you borrow. Keep repayments, fees and any final amount separate from the cash price. Consider how long the car must remain useful: a four-seat car that fits beautifully today may become inconvenient if your regular passenger count changes. Conversely, buying a larger car for one hypothetical fifth passenger makes less sense when it complicates every daily parking manoeuvre.

Check the service conditions as well as the headline warranty

Choose a service location you can realistically use and ask for the written schedule, prices and battery-cover conditions for the exact vehicle. The Hyundai offer explains that its advertised maximum seven-year warranty includes a further two years conditional on scheduled servicing through Hyundai; otherwise the standard five-year cover applies. Do not treat that headline as unconditional seven-year cover or as evidence of fewer faults.

We have not compared matched long-term owner samples or repair costs. Before committing, test the controls and alerts on the selected build, try the seats on a familiar route and ask what happens if delivery misses the campaign. The Australian Dolphin buyer's guide provides broader background; it does not replace your dated order and current policy documents.

How this comparison was made

This is Australian documentary buying research, not a road test or a measured efficiency, charging, crash or reliability comparison. Offer pages and manufacturer documents were read on 19 October 2026 Australian time, 18 October UTC. Hyundai's older unqualified specification PDF was retained, then superseded for our technical references by the August 2026 files linked from its current Australian model page. The offer's unspecified build year remains explicit.

Our recommendation weighs passenger requirements, parking dimensions, cabin functions and conditional purchase prices. Calculated differences are editorial arithmetic, not manufacturer figures. The practical answer is Dolphin for five seats and the lower eligible purchase price; Inster when four seats suffice and its compact package provides enough daily value to justify the premium. Test those conditions before selecting either.

Questions before ordering

Is the Inster a five-seater? The Australian brochure used here describes four seats. Dolphin's local specification lists five. Confirm the actual vehicle's seating on the order.

Does the Hyundai have more range? The selected references are 327 km combined WLTP for Inster Standard Range and 340 km for Dolphin Essential. Neither is guaranteed road range; we have not measured them together.

Can I combine BYD's novated-lease percentage with A$28,888 driveaway? Do not assume so. The campaign excludes additional promotional discounts unless specifically allowed. Ask for the applicable written transaction terms.
