Leapmotor B05 vs BYD Dolphin in Australia: is the B05 worth A$7,102 more?
Dolphin Essential is our lower-budget starting point under the current Australian offers. B05 Style earns its premium when its extra published range, performance or practical fit solves a real need.
Dolphin Essential for the smaller bill; B05 when the extra capability matters
Start with the BYD Dolphin Essential if you want a lower-cost electric hatch for local journeys and can charge conveniently. Its current Australian drive-away promotion is A$7,102 below the Leapmotor B05 Style offer. That is a meaningful saving when the Dolphin already covers your daily distance, passengers and luggage.
Shortlist the B05 Style when its longer published WLTP range or stronger advertised acceleration addresses something you actually need. A household doing frequent regional drives has a different buying problem from someone replacing a second car for short urban trips. Do not pay for additional capability simply because it is larger on a specification sheet, but do not buy the cheapest car without checking a demanding regular journey.
This is Dolphin Essential against B05 Style. It does not combine the Essential’s promotional price with Dolphin Premium’s range and performance. Both selected vehicles are battery-electric hatchbacks marketed locally. Our recommendation is a desk-based shortlist, not a claim that we have driven either car or measured their real-world range.
Two current Australian offers with different order deadlines
On 18 October 2026, BYD advertised Dolphin Essential at A$28,888 drive away. Eligible retail buyers must order between 15 September and 15 December 2026 and take delivery by 31 December. Metallic paint costs extra, demonstrators and transactions involving additional promotional discounts are excluded, and allocation remains subject to availability. BYD says eligibility is not guaranteed until delivery.
Leapmotor advertised B05 from A$35,990 drive away, with the Australian buyer’s guide identifying Style as the entry version. The offer applies to new Lightning Yellow stock purchased and delivered between 1 July and 31 December 2026, while stocks last. Other colours and options cost more, and government and rental buyers are excluded.
The A$7,102 difference is between those conditional advertised offers. It is not a guarantee that every colour or dealer order can be delivered at those amounts. Ask for matched written drive-away totals for your state, paint, registration, accessories and delivery date. Do not subtract a novated lease discount from the Dolphin promotion unless the supplier explicitly confirms that the offers can be combined.
Both manufacturer pages provide local ordering and test-drive routes. Confirm the specific delivery vehicle and schedule before paying a deposit. A current order page is sale evidence; it is not confirmation that the exact car you want is already reserved or ready for immediate collection.
Use Essential’s 340 km WLTP, rather than mixing the website’s range headlines
BYD’s currently linked Australian Essential/Premium specification sheet lists Dolphin Essential at 340 km WLTP combined, with a 44.9 kWh battery. B05 Style’s Australian MY26 guide lists up to 401 km WLTP and a 56.2 kWh battery. That is a 61 km laboratory-cycle difference, which can help a buyer shortlist cars for longer journeys. It is not a guaranteed extra 61 km under motorway, winter or loaded conditions.
The Dolphin model page also shows an NEDC figure in its Essential table, while its prominent 427 km WLTP headline belongs to Premium. Neither is the correct equivalent to put beside B05 Style’s 401 km WLTP. The correct Essential number is in the linked specification sheet. If the dealer supplies a revised delivery specification, compare the same named cycle again before using it.
There is also a substantial published acceleration difference: Dolphin Essential is listed at 12.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and B05 Style at 6.7 seconds. Those manufacturer figures do not tell us which car rides, steers or feels better. They are a reason to test the Essential on the hills, slip roads and loaded journeys that matter to you, and to decide whether the B05’s extra spend buys useful performance.
The cargo references are much closer: Dolphin lists 345 litres and B05 357 litres behind the second row. Twelve catalogue litres would not make us declare a family-space winner. Dolphin is also shorter and narrower on the published dimensions. Try the parking bay, child seats and awkward bags rather than assuming the larger B05 will solve a packing problem.

Do not borrow Dolphin Premium’s charging claim for the entry model
Dolphin’s Australian sheet identifies a 60 kW maximum DC charging rating for Essential and 80 kW for Premium. B05 Style lists a 156 kW maximum. These are peak capability references, not the rates you will receive throughout a stop. The Dolphin website’s stated 29-minute 30 to 80% example is specifically for Premium, so we do not present it as an Essential result or subtract it from B05 Style’s reference time.
A household charging overnight may find that either car comfortably replaces its daily driving. Frequent public charging calls for a closer look at compatible chargers, charging curves and your actual stop pattern. A higher peak can be relevant without proving a faster complete journey. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the charge port, cable arrangement and scheduled charging on the version being quoted.
Both brands publish six-year/150,000 km vehicle and eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty headlines in the Australian sources used here, subject to the respective policy terms. That similarity does not establish equal exclusions, battery capacity remedies, servicing bills or support convenience. Obtain the actual booklets, service schedules and insurance quotes before deciding how much ownership will cost.
Decide whether your use justifies the additional A$7,102
This comparison was checked on 18 October 2026 using Australian manufacturer offer pages and the current linked local specification sheets. The Dolphin document has 2025 in its filename and version 02.1C on the page; it remains the sheet linked by the live local model page. We downloaded it, read the Essential column and checked the rendered table. We have not substituted a foreign trim or a different test cycle.
Begin with the Dolphin Essential quote and an honest list of your longest regular journeys. Check its range margin using relevant real-world evidence, then test the car with the normal passengers and load. If it meets those needs comfortably, keeping more than A$7,000 is a strong reason to choose it under these offers.
If the Essential’s performance, route margin or practical fit falls short, repeat the same checks in the B05 Style. Spend the extra money when that comparison solves a concrete problem and the final quote still works for you. This method leaves room for either car to win for a particular household. It does not claim a measured range, road-test or resale-value advantage we have not established.
