MG4 Urban Essence 54 vs Fiat 500e Icon NZ: daily fit or a limited-stock deal?

Try MG4 Urban for the regular family job; Fiat if an available Icon fits your people and luggage. Compare delivered quotes and charging conditions.

MG4 Urban for the regular family job; Fiat if the remaining Icon fits your actual life

Put the MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 first on the test-drive list if this will be your household's everyday electric hatch: its documented rear-seat layout, split-folding seat, underfloor storage and heated cabin equipment give you concrete things to check against the school run and weekly shop. Put the Fiat 500e Icon first if you specifically want its cabin, fixed glass roof and design, and an available new car fits your people, luggage and parking routine.

The Fiat's advertised NZ$37,990 plus on-road costs is a useful starting point, with limited stock clearly stated. It is not proof that it is cheaper than the MG today: we do not have a current manufacturer price for the selected MG4 Urban. Obtain two delivered quotations before deciding the price gap.

Both choices still need a workable charging routine. Neither an appealing stock price nor a larger laboratory range cures an inconvenient charging location. For a sole household car, start with the longest journey you make regularly, the people who travel with you, and somewhere reliable to recharge.

An Essence 54 MY26 and a new-stock Icon, not two interchangeable model years

MG's New Zealand selection is the MG4 EV Urban Essence 54. The current linked specification document explicitly covers MY26 and dates its data to March 2026. It gives a 54 kWh LFP battery and 118 kW/250 Nm motor. This Urban is a separate product from the other MG4 hatch; do not use the RWD Essence 64's equipment, battery or charging figures for it.

Fiat New Zealand still presents the electric Icon and a quotation route. Its linked retail price list dated 5 May 2026 identifies the all-electric 500e Icon, code 332.M122I, with an 87 kW motor. Gazley's current Icon page offers NZ$37,990 plus on-road costs and explicitly says limited stock. That establishes a local retail choice, not an unlimited supply of newly built cars.

The Fiat offer does not identify a model year for every remaining car. Ask which new Icon is offered, its build and compliance dates, colour, specification, registration status and delivery timing. A new car's build year and the date on a price list are different facts. Do the same specification check for the MG rather than relying on the name on the showroom sign.

NZ$37,990 includes GST, but it is not the final delivered figure

The official Fiat price list includes GST and excludes registration, on-road costs, options and accessories. The live Gazley Icon offer repeats the NZ$37,990 starting price with on-road costs extra and a limited-stock qualification. The crossed-out former price on the May document is historical; it does not establish a fresh discount today.

MG's current model page provides configuration and test-drive routes, but the manufacturer price is not established in this comparison. A review-time NZ$38,990 plus on-road costs is not a substitute for today's offer. We therefore do not subtract the Fiat advertisement from that older figure and call the difference a saving.

Request matching cash quotations showing GST, registration, delivery and other on-road items, paint, accessories and any initial road-user-charge purchase separately. If financing, compare the deposit, term, interest, fees, final payment and total payable, not just a weekly amount. Add only the home electrical work and charging equipment your property needs. Those items can change which car is the sensible purchase without changing either advertised price.

Compare the real charging stop, not 30 minutes against 35 minutes

MG's exact Essence 54 specification states a CCS Type 2 connection, a 6.6 kW onboard AC charger and an 87 kW maximum DC charging power. Its estimated rapid-charge time is 30 minutes from 10 to 80% at 25°C. The temperature and state-of-charge window belong with the number.

Fiat and Gazley advertise up to 85 kW DC and reaching up to 80% in 35 minutes, without stating the starting percentage in that passage. That is not a matched test against MG's 10 to 80% estimate. We do not claim that the MG saves five minutes. Fiat's supplied 11 kW Mode 3 cable also does not, by itself, prove the vehicle's maximum onboard AC acceptance.

For home charging, have an installer assess your parking space, supply and the equipment proposed for the actual car. For a regular road trip, check a compatible charger on the route and a backup. Peak power is a ceiling, not an entire charging curve: arrival charge, battery temperature, charger sharing and the site can change the stop. No charging session was measured for this comparison.

405 km and up to 320 km are laboratory references, not your journey allowance

The MG specification gives 405 km WLTP combined; Fiat's local material gives up to 320 km on the WLTP combined cycle. These labels make a more useful starting comparison than mixing a city figure with a combined figure. They remain manufacturer laboratory references, with no common road test of these two supplied cars here.

If your regular journey needs more margin, the MG's published combined figure is a reason to examine it first. That is a conditional buying judgment, not a promise of motorway distance. Speed, hills, weather, heating, load, tyres and battery condition can affect what is available between stops. Allow a reserve and plan a charging alternative instead of scheduling every arrival at nearly empty.

We do not turn battery capacity or these ranges into a monthly electricity bill. Use your own distance, home tariff and likely public charging share, then obtain an insurance quote and maintenance schedule for each offered car. Any running-cost comparison also needs current New Zealand road-user-charge treatment. With those inputs not assembled into a matched calculation, a payback period would be guesswork.

Keep the MG underfloor compartment separate from the main boot

The MG document lists 382 litres with the seats in place, a separate 98 litres beneath the boot floor, and 1,266 litres with the rear seats folded. Its webpage's 480-litre headline includes that underfloor compartment. Treating all 480 litres as one uninterrupted main luggage bay would overstate what a tall suitcase or pushchair can occupy.

The same specification lists a 40/60 split rear seat and ISOFIX on the two outer rear positions. That gives the family buyer a sensible demonstration: fit the actual child seats, set the front seats for their users, and load the bags with the parcel shelf and boot floor as you would use them. A folded-seat volume is irrelevant when those seats must carry passengers.

We have not closed an equivalent current Icon boot-volume or seating-layout specification in the local material used here, so there is no invented litres contest. Sit every regular occupant in the offered Fiat, test access and load the same bags. If it is a second car used mostly by one or two people, that fit check can favour a different choice from a sole household car. The MG's more detailed storage specification is useful evidence, not a substitute for that exercise.

Heated everyday equipment or the Icon cabin: try the controls you actually use

The Essence 54 specification marks heated front seats and steering wheel, a six-way electric driver's seat, four-way manual passenger seat, heat pump and single-zone automatic climate control. It also lists a 12.8-inch centre display, seven-inch driver display, six speakers, wireless phone mirroring and a 360-degree camera. MG's page explicitly retains physical volume and climate controls.

The local Icon offer lists Ice Beige eco-leather trim, a fixed glass roof, 17-inch diamond-cut wheels, automatic climate control, a 10.25-inch navigation screen, seven-inch instruments, wireless phone connection and wireless charging. Gazley lists reversing camera and parking sensors; its 360 parking sensors are not a claim of an all-round camera image like MG's.

Try the driver's seating range, glare through the roof, phone pairing, a navigation instruction and a heating adjustment during the demonstration. If you often take a passenger, remember that MG's driver's electric adjustment does not turn the passenger seat electric. The Fiat's design appeal can justify choosing it, but only if the actual available cabin works without sacrificing a daily task you need.

Assistance equipment is not a common crash-test result or a warranty contract

MG's specification marks adaptive cruise, emergency braking, lane-keeping, blind-spot detection and seven airbags. Gazley's Icon list also gives seven airbags, adaptive cruise with lane centring and traffic-jam assistance, alongside a reversing camera. Ask for a demonstration of how the supplied systems engage, warn and disengage; neither car becomes autonomous because a sales page uses a level-two description.

We have not independently matched current crash-test reports to both offered vehicles in this comparison, so there is no relative crash-safety ranking. Likewise, equipment lists do not establish reliability, parts lead times, insurance cost or resale value.

Before paying a deposit on remaining stock, obtain the applicable New Zealand vehicle and traction-battery warranty documents, when coverage starts, any retention threshold, maintenance obligations and the servicing location. The full comparable contracts are not closed here. A satisfactory stock quote should explain those points as clearly as its price; a discounted-looking car is not automatically the lower-risk ownership choice.

Sources and the limits of this comparison

This is a New Zealand documentary buying comparison using local manufacturer and retailer material checked on 20 October 2026 UTC. The MG document covers MY26 data dated March 2026; Fiat's price document is dated 5 May, corroborated by the current limited-stock Icon advertisement. Neither document date identifies every car's build year.

Trade Me's MG4 Urban quick-drive review places the Fiat 500e among its local buying alternatives. Its driving impressions belong to that author, not CathayEV, and its older price and differing power figure do not override the current manufacturer specification. We have not road-tested, charged or load-tested these cars together. Delivered prices, the actual Fiat stock specification and comparable ownership terms remain the next checks.

Get the delivered quotes, then repeat the same real-life demonstration

Choose the MG4 Urban provisionally if the regular family task needs its documented storage layout, heated equipment and larger stated combined range, and the delivered proposal is acceptable. Choose the Icon provisionally if an available new car passes your occupant and luggage test, you value its specific cabin, and the full limited-stock deal works for you.

If neither has convenient charging, solve that before treating either as a bargain. If the Fiat fit fails, do not let its advertised number overrule the daily inconvenience. If both fit, a current MG price and the two complete ownership proposals will settle more than an unmatched charging-time comparison. Continue with other buying guides.

Questions before reserving either car

Is the Fiat 500e Icon still a new-car option in New Zealand?
Fiat NZ presents the Icon and Gazley currently advertises it from NZ$37,990 plus on-road costs, with limited stock. That does not establish unlimited new orders, a particular build year or delivery date. Confirm the actual new car, specification and registration status offered.
Is the Fiat cheaper than the MG4 Urban today?
The Fiat starting price is visible; the current delivered MG4 Urban Essence 54 price is not established here. Compare two current cash quotations with GST, registration, other on-road items, paint and accessories separated. Do not substitute an older review price for the MG quote.
Does the MG charge five minutes faster?
That conclusion is unsupported. MG estimates 30 minutes from 10 to 80% at 25°C; Fiat advertises 35 minutes to 80% without a starting percentage in the cited passage. The windows and conditions are not matched, and neither is our measured charging result.
Does the MG have a 480-litre main boot?
Its specification separates 382 litres with the seats up and 98 litres under the floor. The webpage total includes both. A pushchair or tall bag cannot necessarily use those compartments as one space. Test your own load with the rear seats in their normal position.
Which would CathayEV try first for a household car?
Try the MG first when documented family storage and heated daily equipment matter most. Try the Fiat first when its available Icon cabin is the specific attraction and your occupant/luggage test works. In either case, confirm charging, the delivered quote and ownership terms before reserving.
