MG4 Urban Essence 54 vs MG4 Essence 64: which New Zealand MG4 earns the spend?
Compare two different New Zealand MG4 hatchbacks: the NZ$6,000 MRP gap, boot storage, selected battery columns, charging claims and conditional warranty.
Start with Urban; spend more when the extra range allowance earns its place
Start with MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 if your New Zealand household needs an electric hatchback for regular local journeys and values the lower published purchase price. Its current NZ$38,990 maximum retail price sits NZ$6,000 below the updated MG4 Essence 64, before on-road costs and options. The Urban also has a larger listed main boot. Keep Essence 64 on the shortlist for its longer WLTP range figure and different rear-drive layout. The premium needs to answer a practical need in your week, rather than follow automatically from the shared MG4 name. Our conditional choice is Urban for a workable daily charging routine and luggage fit; choose Essence 64 if its additional published range allowance and your own test drive justify the actual cash-price difference. Clarify the conflicting battery and charging copy before ordering.
These are two current New Zealand cars sharing a name
Select MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 on MG Motor New Zealand's Urban page, and Essence 64 on its separate updated MG4 page. Both have local prices, specification links and test-drive routes. Driven Car Guide's New Zealand first drive explains why the names are confusing: Urban uses a different platform and front-wheel drive, while the updated regular MG4 retains rear-wheel drive. It is not simply one hatchback with a battery upgrade. The selected Essence 64 is also separate from XPOWER, whose all-wheel-drive layout and acceleration headline appear on the same model page. Ask the dealer to identify the exact model, build and equipment on the order, with a delivery commitment for an allocated car. An active NZ shopping page establishes a local offer; it does not establish stock at your nearest dealership.

The NZ$6,000 difference is between two MRPs, before on-road costs
The current NZ selectors display Urban Essence 54 at NZ$38,990 and MG4 Essence 64 at NZ$44,990. Both label the figure maximum retail price plus on-road costs. MG says its MRPs include GST and exclude on-road costs and optional extras. Subtracting those published figures gives NZ$6,000 on that stated basis; it is not a guaranteed difference between two final driveaway invoices. Request itemised cash quotations for the intended colour, accessories, registration and delivery arrangements. The 3.9% finance badges shown nearby describe a separate credit offer, with its own term, deposit, fees and eligibility. They are not an additional cash discount. Keep finance repayments out of this purchase-price comparison, and check that any dealer offer still supplies the exact Essence grade described here.

Match the selected battery column before comparing WLTP figures
Urban's NZ specification lists a 54kWh LFP battery, 118kW motor and 405km WLTP combined range. The updated MG4 brochure's Essence 64 column lists 64kWh, 140kW and 452km WLTP. The latter figure gives a larger published allowance for trips out of town, but neither WLTP number predicts a wet winter motorway run with passengers and heating. There is a source inconsistency to resolve: the current Essence 64 selector and its linked specification sheet say LFP, while generic copy further down the model page still describes NCM. We use the selected-grade PDF for this paper comparison and retain the conflict. Obtain written confirmation of the allocated vehicle's battery specification. Do not substitute an older MG4's power figure or XPOWER's battery chemistry because the badge and capacity appear familiar.

Read the charging window, temperature and column together
Both linked NZ sheets specify a 6.6kW onboard AC charger. A higher-powered wall unit cannot make the car accept more than its own limit, and the installation still needs an assessment of the property's supply. For public DC charging, Urban's sheet lists an 87kW maximum and an estimated 30 minutes from 10% to 80% at 25 degrees Celsius. The Essence 64 column lists 154kW and 25 minutes for the same stated window and temperature. However, MG4's generic web charging section says 30 minutes. The adjacent XPOWER column also lists 30 minutes, with a different peak, so its figures must not migrate across the table. Ask the dealer to reconcile the model-page claim with the current Essence 64 sheet. These are manufacturer estimates, not our matched charging test; battery temperature, charger output and the charging curve determine the actual stop.

Urban has 382 litres in the main boot, plus a separate underfloor compartment
The Urban brochure lists 382 litres with the seats in place and a separate 98-litre underboot compartment. Its web page's larger 480-litre headline includes that underfloor space: adding another 98 litres to 480 would count it twice. The regular MG4 sheet lists 350 litres with the seats up. Treat these as manufacturer luggage references and put your own pram, bags or mobility equipment into both cars, including a check of access beneath the boot floor. Urban is also the longer car, at 4,395mm against 4,287mm, so the lower price does not mean a smaller parking footprint. Its sheet lists 130mm running clearance, compared with 158mm for Essence 64. Try your driveway and usual loading task before deciding that either capacity or clearance settles practicality for your household.

Heated seats and a heat pump are already in Urban
The cheaper Urban is not missing every cold-morning convenience. Its NZ sheet includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a heat pump. Essence 64's sheet lists those features too. Both list a six-way electric driver's seat and a four-way manually adjusted passenger seat; the extra spend does not buy a powered passenger seat in these selected specifications. Each has a 12.8-inch central display, while the driver display is listed as 7 inches in Urban and 10.25 inches in Essence 64. Sit in the actual cars to check readability, seat comfort and controls. Use the equipment columns to establish what is included, then use the test drive to decide what you can operate comfortably. An assistance-feature list alone does not establish a safety-rating winner.

Treat the longer warranty as conditional on the current NZ service rules
For a new private-use passenger car, MG's current New Zealand warranty page states a standard seven-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty. It describes an extension to as much as ten years or 250,000km, whichever comes first, when the servicing and eligibility conditions are satisfied. Scheduled services must be completed through the authorised MG network within the applicable time or distance windows. The page also separates older purchase cohorts; an unconditional promise from a 2024 or early-2025 sale is not the rule to assume for an October 2026 order. This common vehicle policy does not establish identical cover for every component. Battery-specific limits, exclusions and any capacity-retention threshold were not resolved from the visible current terms used here. Attach the applicable warranty and service booklet to each quote, and check a convenient service location and the actual schedule before assigning value to the extension.

Buy the exact specification you have checked, rather than a familiar model name
Sources were read on 23 October 2026, New Zealand local date. The currently linked NZ brochures identify MY26 specifications with March 2026 information for Urban and April 2026 for MG4, and warn that specifications can change. The New Zealand first drive establishes the two models' different platforms and layouts; its earlier prices are not substituted for the live NZ selectors. This is a sourced purchase comparison, not our road test, measured charging session or forecast of running costs, reliability or resale. The remaining checks are concrete: obtain both itemised cash offers, confirm the allocated Essence 64 battery and charging specification, load your intended luggage, try the route and controls, and attach the current service and warranty terms. Choose Urban if that answers the household's needs at the lower quote. Spend more on Essence 64 when its range allowance and the car you actually drive justify the difference.
Questions before ordering either New Zealand MG4
- Is MG4 Urban just the ordinary MG4 with a smaller battery?
- No. The New Zealand first drive identifies different platforms, front-wheel drive for Urban and rear-wheel drive for the updated regular MG4. Confirm the exact model name and Essence grade on the order.
- Is Essence 64 exactly NZ$6,000 dearer on the road?
- The published MRPs are NZ$38,990 and NZ$44,990, a NZ$6,000 gap before on-road costs and optional extras. Final cash quotations can differ with equipment and dealer charges.
- Does Urban have a 578-litre boot including underfloor storage?
- No. Its brochure lists 382 litres in the main boot and 98 litres separately beneath it. The model page total of 480 litres already includes that underfloor compartment.
- Does the updated MG4 Essence 64 always charge in 25 minutes?
- No. Its NZ sheet estimates 10-80% in 25 minutes at 25 degrees Celsius, while generic model-page copy says 30 minutes. Obtain clarification for the allocated car. Neither estimate guarantees an actual charging stop.
- Is the ten-year warranty automatic for a new private passenger car?
- The current NZ page states seven years/unlimited kilometres as standard and a conditional service-activated extension up to ten years/250,000km. Authorised scheduled servicing and eligibility matter; separate battery and component terms need the applicable booklet.
