Our take

The ATTO 1 is BYD's smallest car in New Zealand, sold in China as the Seagull (海鸥). It suits city drivers and second-car households who want an inexpensive EV and rarely leave town. The Essential starts at NZ$30,990 before on-road costs, but its 220 km WLTP range is short for anyone who regularly heads out of the city. The Premium has a larger battery and a quoted 310 km WLTP, at a higher price. For most buyers, the Premium is the version that makes sense, because the Essential's range leaves little margin in winter or on hills. Boot space is modest, so check it against your usual loads.
