Our take

The MG S5 EV is a compact electric SUV from MG, which is owned by China's state-backed SAIC Motor. It suits buyers who want a familiar brand and a practical boot without paying a premium. The Essence 49 starts at NZ$46,990 before on-road costs and quotes 335 km WLTP, which is tight for long trips. The larger-battery Essence 62 reaches 450 km WLTP, and it costs noticeably more. Pick it if you often drive between towns or live where charging is sparse. The larger battery also charges faster on DC, which keeps stops manageable. The MG warranty is long and unlimited on mileage, which is reassuring for private owners.
