ATTO 3 EVO Design vs EV3 Air long-range: winter kit or the longer-trip shortlist?
UK Design RWD and EV3 Air 81.4kWh: compare the actual heat-pump grades, range and charging references, current Kia grant basis and a fresh BYD quote.
The verdict
Start with EV3 Air 81.4kWh if longer journeys dominate and its exact UK quote and family fit work. Shortlist ATTO 3 EVO Design alongside it if a standard heat pump, 360° camera and its declared charging capability are useful enough to justify the current proposal. Do not choose either from the WLTP figure or a dated launch price alone.
Buy the BYD ATTO 3 EVO Design if
You value the Design’s documented heat pump and 360° camera, can use its charging capability on your routes and receive a competitive current delivered quote.
Buy the Kia EV3 Air 81.4kWh if
The Air long-range version fits the family, its longer published WLTP reference suits your planning and you accept its actual winter equipment.

Decide which inconvenience you are trying to remove
For a family that regularly travels beyond its familiar local area, I would book the EV3 Air long-range first. Its published range gives more planning headroom on paper, and the current price table identifies a clear UK purchase reference. That is a reason to test it, rather than a promise that a cold motorway trip will need no stop. Bring the people and luggage that determine whether the car works.
ATTO 3 EVO Design deserves the same appointment if its included equipment solves a real problem. A heat pump and an all-round camera can be useful, but their presence does not quantify winter energy savings or parking confidence. Try the controls, camera view and family task yourself. Ask for an up-to-date delivered proposal before deciding how much those features are worth.
Both are battery-electric cars. If neither has a dependable charging routine at home, work or on your regular routes, the first comparison is between the charging arrangements you can actually use. A longer range reference can make a difficult routine less frequent; it cannot provide access to a charger. Match a current BYD cash quote to the Kia price before choosing on cost.
Select the UK EVO Design and the Air long-range version
The BYD here is ATTO 3 EVO Design rear-wheel drive, with the UK sheet’s 74.8 kWh LFP battery and 230 kW motor. It is not the earlier ATTO 3 specification or the dual-motor Excellence. BYD’s UK announcement dated 19 March 2026 confirmed pricing and orders opening in April; the EVO specification is published on BYD's UK site. We have not identified an allocated vehicle, its individual model year or a collection date.
The Kia is Air 81.4kWh, 201bhp, front-wheel drive with a single-speed automatic transmission. Air is also sold with a smaller battery, so “EV3 Air” alone does not close the order. Confirm the 81.4kWh selection, wheels, paint and equipment in the proposal. GT-Line S heat-pump options and GT performance figures are separate choices.
Use these documentary selections to obtain two written offers. A current sales route does not reserve a particular car or delivery date.

Use 316 and 375 miles to plan the question, not answer the journey
The UK BYD Design sheet declares 316 miles WLTP combined. Kia’s current table gives Air on 17-inch wheels 375 miles combined WLTP with the long-range battery. These are grade-specific laboratory references. The Air figure cannot be carried over to another wheel or performance version, and the BYD Excellence has a different published range.
For your longest regular journey, identify the destination charging arrangement, an arrival reserve and a practical alternative stop. Consider the return journey as well. Weather, speed, passengers, luggage and cabin heating can change the result. This comparison has no shared winter or motorway test with which to turn the catalogue figures into exact distances between stops.
If your usual trip is comfortably handled by either actual car, range may cease to be the deciding difference. If it regularly tests your charging options, the EV3’s larger published figure makes it a sensible first test, while the relevant route evidence remains essential. The larger WLTP figure is useful context, not a guaranteed winter journey.

A six-minute paper difference does not price the whole stop
BYD lists maximum 220 kW DC and a 25-minute 10-80% reference. Its footnote describes a 25°C ambient test and recommends a suitable high-performance charger of 350 kW or above. The battery’s temperature, starting charge, station capability and power sharing affect a real session. A maximum is not a power level maintained throughout it.
Kia lists 31 minutes from 10 to 80% in the 81.4kWh charging table. That is a manufacturer reference, not a session conducted beside the BYD under common conditions. Do not turn the two published times into a guaranteed six-minute saving on every trip. Access, payment, queues and the distance off your route can matter more.
Choose actual charging sites before choosing a charging winner. Check opening hours, payment, reliable alternatives and how the car prepares its battery for a stop. At home, BYD’s 11 kW AC reference requires a suitable supply; it does not upgrade the circuit already installed. Ask the installer and retailer to confirm the selected car and connection. Compare the complete stop and its conditions, not just the published minutes.
A heat pump is a real specification difference; its benefit is unmeasured here
The EVO sheet marks a heat pump as standard for Design. Kia’s UK grade table marks no heat pump for Air and lists it as an option for GT-Line S. A generic EV3 review or a photograph of a higher grade cannot add that option to an Air order.
Air nevertheless lists heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The meaningful question is how comfortably and conveniently the exact car handles your cold-weather routine, not whether a single component is present. A heat pump can be part of the equipment decision without providing evidence of a particular energy saving in your weather.
BYD also lists a 360° camera for Design. Air’s table lists a reversing camera and parking sensors; its 360° surround-view system belongs to higher grades. Try the view into your own sort of bay, the warnings and the controls. Feature lists do not measure image quality or prove which assistance system you will prefer. Check the exact grade before paying for equipment you expect to use.

Keep the grant, finance support and final delivered price separate
Kia’s current Air 81.4kWh table gives £36,055 OTR before the Electric Car Grant and £34,555 including £1,500 ECG. Those are different price bases. The price table separates VAT, delivery, first registration and the stated first-year tax amount; eligibility and the final order still need checking. Do not subtract the grant twice from an offer that already includes it.
The current campaign also advertises £2,000 towards an Air PCP deposit and 3.9% APR representative, under retail terms from 1 October to 15 December 2026. A contribution linked to a finance agreement is not an additional unconditional cash reduction. Compare the complete agreement if financing interests you, including the deposit, term, fees and final payment.
BYD’s £38,990 OTR figure in the March announcement is a launch reference. We have not verified a current exact Design cash quotation, so there is no matched acquisition-price gap here. Obtain that quote with its paint, delivery, tax, accessories and any promotion identified. Then compare your real electricity tariffs, insurance and servicing. No personal mileage or shared consumption test supports an annual saving or payback claim.
Test the load with everyone’s seats still available
Use the same child restraints, pram, mobility equipment or holiday bags in both cars, keeping the seats your passengers need upright. Check rear access after setting the driver’s position, the shape of the boot opening and where the charging leads will live. BYD publishes separate front and rear storage figures; adding compartments does not establish that a particular suitcase will fit.
We have not established a common luggage-measurement method or conducted a shared loading test. Try the tailgate under your garage door and load at the kerb as well as in the showroom. A useful family layout can outweigh a laboratory range difference you rarely need.
Drive both on representative roads with the same task in mind. Rear-wheel drive and a higher motor-power figure do not establish better ride comfort, grip or suitability for your passengers. Check visibility, warnings, phone connection and everyday controls before allowing acceleration or a specification badge to dominate.
China-side evidence
Check the local car and the support behind the offer
This shortlist uses the UK EVO Design and UK EV3 Air long-range specification. Overseas prices, owner complaint totals and an earlier ATTO 3’s battery or charging figures do not establish the ownership experience of these selected cars. The local documentation is the starting point for checking the actual order.
Ask which workshop will handle routine maintenance and an immobilised car, what the applicable vehicle and battery cover requires, and what mobility arrangements are included. Obtain insurance quotations for the exact selections. We have no equivalent reliability or resale sample that would justify awarding either car a long-term ownership victory.
Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.
The appointment order can change once the actual offers arrive
Choose the EV3 appointment first when longer routes are the pressing problem, its Air equipment is sufficient and its current eligible quote fits your budget. Put the BYD alongside it when the documented winter and camera equipment are useful and the delivered proposal makes that case attractive. If either fails the family or charging test, its headline advantage does not rescue the purchase.
This is documentary research from current UK primary sources read on 19 October 2026 UTC. The February-coded BYD specification and March launch announcement retain their original dates. Manufacturer figures are not CathayEV test results. Exact vehicle model years, stock, handover dates, matched BYD cash pricing and personal running costs remain open; no reservation, finance application or joint road, winter, charging or loading test was performed.
Questions before the two test drives
- Does EV3 Air 81.4kWh have a heat pump?
- The current UK grade table does not list a heat pump for Air; it lists the option on GT-Line S. Air does list heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Confirm the exact order rather than borrowing higher-grade equipment.
- Is the BYD guaranteed to save six minutes at a charger?
- No. Its 25-minute and Kia’s 31-minute 10-80% figures are manufacturer references without a shared session. BYD states 25°C and a suitable 350 kW-plus charger; the whole stop also includes access, payment and any waiting.
- Can I compare £38,990 with £34,555 as today’s saving?
- No. The BYD figure is the March launch reference; the Kia figure includes an eligibility-dependent £1,500 grant. Obtain a current exact Design cash quote and compare equivalent delivered totals.
