BYD Dolphin Surf Boost vs Dacia Sandero Essential TCe 100: buying price and annual budget
A four-seat electric Surf or a five-seat petrol manual: compare the current UK purchase references, charging access and inputs needed for an honest annual-cost budget.
The verdict
Start with the Sandero Essential TCe 100 if the lower advertised purchase reference and a fifth seat matter most, and a manual gearbox suits you. Put Dolphin Surf Boost first if four seats are enough, you have dependable charging, and an electric daily routine is worth its higher purchase commitment. We have not established that electricity savings recover that commitment: delivered quotes, mileage, actual energy use and ownership costs still need to be matched.
Buy the BYD Dolphin Surf Boost if
Four seats work for your household, regular charging is practical and a complete written quote justifies choosing electric propulsion.
Buy the Dacia Sandero Essential TCe 100 if
You need five seats or a lower advertised starting reference and are happy to drive the selected six-speed petrol manual.

Five conditions behind the choice
Purchase reference: the Surf cash configuration is higher than Dacia's advertised recommended starting figure, but neither substitutes for two itemised delivered orders. A budget decision needs the amount you will actually pay, not an assumed gap between different price bases. These are published references; final delivered totals and included charges need matching.
Passenger places: the UK Surf guide states four seats. Sandero's current UK comparison states five. If five people must travel together, the selected Surf is unsuitable before any energy saving is considered. If four seats suffice, check both cars with the passengers and restraints you use. A fifth passenger rules out this Surf; seat count does not prove restraint fit.
Driving routine: Sandero Essential TCe 100 is a six-speed manual petrol car. Surf is battery-electric. A driver who requires a conventional clutch-free daily routine should not treat an automatic Sandero price or an LPG Stepway specification as this car. Charging access and willingness to drive a manual can decide before running-cost calculations.
Energy reference: Surf Boost's 200 miles WLTP combined is a laboratory reference, not your motorway or winter result. For Sandero, obtain representative fuel consumption for the same use. Neither a battery size nor a tank-size calculation supplies an annual running-cost winner. Do not compare a tank-distance guess with an electric laboratory range.
Luggage check: the declared boot figures have different descriptions and no confirmed common measurement procedure here. Load the pram, bags or mobility aid with the necessary seats in use; do not convert a nominal litre difference into a suitcase promise. No common measurement method or shared loading test established; try the actual objects.
Identify Boost and the new Essential TCe 100 before comparing money
The current BYD UK configurator was actually selected as Boost in Lime Green, with Black + Grey interior and included 16-inch wheels. Its cash-purchase panel displayed £21,975. The UK guide assigns Boost a 43.2kWh LFP battery, 65kW front motor and four seats. This is not the Active's smaller battery, Comfort's higher-power specification or a five-seat Surf offered in Spain.
Dacia currently advertises New Sandero Essential TCe 100 MY26 from £14,765 as manufacturer recommended retail price, excluding metallic paint. Its current technical comparison identifies a 999cc three-cylinder petrol engine, 74kW/100hp, front-wheel drive and six forward gears in a manual gearbox. It is not the older TCe 90, Eco-G LPG or Stepway.
The two published amounts do not establish the final cash difference for a particular delivery. Ask each retailer for registration, delivery, paint, accessories and any other compulsory charge on an identified car. Confirm model year, stock allocation and timing. A build or enquiry route establishes a current offer, not a reserved VIN or guaranteed collection date. Compare finance only after the cash proposals, with deposit, fees, interest, term and final payment separated.

Build an annual budget without inventing a payback
Start with your actual annual mileage, including the recurring long journey rather than just the commute. For Surf, record how much energy will be bought at home, at work and publicly. Use the rate on each relevant tariff and a realistic wall-energy requirement for those miles. Electricity drawn from the meter includes charging losses; do not use battery capacity as though it were the full annual bill.
A useful calculation is annual miles multiplied by paid wall-energy use per mile, allocated across the actual charging rates. Add only any extra fixed charge caused by the car's tariff or supply change, rather than charging it with a household bill you would pay anyway. Keep installation as an upfront cost and check whether a lower overnight rate changes other household spending.
For Sandero, use fuel consumed for your mileage and the petrol price you expect to pay. Keep litres and UK imperial gallons consistent if a quote uses mpg. Then add insurance, servicing, tyres, applicable vehicle tax and finance costs on comparable terms. For a multi-year ownership decision, resale and borrowing costs also matter; a fuel-only difference is not the total cost of owning a car.
We have not obtained your mileage, tariffs, installation proposal, fuel receipts, insurance or service quotations. We therefore give no annual saving or break-even year. This preserves the price question: the electric choice must justify both its purchase commitment and its actual annual budget. If the saving disappears under your public-charging share, do not rescue it with an off-peak rate you cannot use.
Use the Boost's own range and charging conditions
The UK guide declares 200 miles WLTP combined for Boost. That helps shortlist routes, but speed, weather, heating, load and arrival reserve can change what you achieve. The city-cycle figure and the Comfort's range belong to other references. Check the difficult journey against real charging locations and an alternative site, rather than treating the combined result as a guaranteed distance.
Boost lists CCS2, up to 85kW DC and 11kW AC. Its reference is thirty minutes from ten to eighty per cent; the shorter twenty-two-minute entry starts at thirty per cent. Those are different windows, not two claims about the same stop. The guide also gives conditions for the station and temperature; a peak vehicle rating is not sustained power everywhere.
At home, the 11kW reference is three phase. Your supply and installed equipment may limit charging below that level. Ask an installer about the circuit, protection, cable route and permissions. A dependable overnight routine can be more valuable than a faster occasional session. If home or workplace charging remains uncertain, include public-charging detours and prices before paying for the electric choice.

The fifth place and a loaded test can outweigh the drivetrain
For a family needing five places together, Sandero's declared seating capacity is a decisive advantage over this four-seat Surf. It does not prove five adults will be comfortable or that three child restraints will fit. Check the exact restraints, belt access and passenger positions in the demonstrator and the order specification.
BYD declares 3,990mm length; Dacia lists 4,102mm. Their difference is 112mm by editorial subtraction, without proving a turning-circle advantage. Their published extended-mirror widths are 1,970mm and 2,012mm respectively. Measure your gate, bay and door-opening space rather than using body width alone.
The guide gives Surf 308 litres with seats up; Dacia calls its 410-litre entry minimum boot volume. We have not established a common measurement basis or tested the same load. Try the awkward item, keep passenger seats available and leave room for the cable. A car that wins a nominal volume comparison may still fail your particular opening or loading task.

Check the ordered equipment and the workshop you will use
Boost includes a powered driver's-seat adjustment and folding heated mirrors in the UK guide. The Comfort's heated front seats and other higher-grade equipment are not automatically included. Dacia's Essential equipment and controls must likewise be checked on the quoted TCe 100; do not compare an image of a higher trim with the base car you will buy.
During the test drive, try the controls, phone connection, parking view and visibility with your normal seating position. Check clutch effort and low-speed manoeuvres in the manual Sandero. For Surf, try regenerative-braking settings and the control sequence you will use every day. A feature list does not measure ride comfort, warning calibration or crash protection.
Ask for the vehicle and battery warranties, service intervals, exclusions and assistance applying to the delivered units. Obtain insurance and maintenance prices and identify the workshop that will handle an immobilised car. We have no matched repair-time or failure sample to award a reliability winner, and no current, unit-specific crash assessment is used here to settle the purchase.
China-side evidence
Overseas owner reports are questions, not UK running-cost inputs
We do not have a verified matched sample of Chinese-owner running costs for these exact UK versions. Surf, related Seagull models and Sandero variants can differ in seating, battery, equipment and service arrangements. A foreign range report cannot determine your UK tariff, insurance or repair bill.
Use owner experiences to prepare checks: charging reliability, controls, practical loading and the retailer's response to a fault. Verify the model and conditions before generalising. This comparison supplies no invented owner score, resale forecast or annual saving to make the more expensive choice look inevitable.
Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.
Which car should you ask to drive first?
Start with Sandero if cash commitment and five places are your priorities and the manual suits the driver. Its lower advertised reference is a reason to investigate, not permission to ignore final fees or buy an unsuitable cabin. Keep the same grade and engine when requesting the order.
Start with Surf Boost if four seats are sufficient, regular charging is practical and you prefer an electric daily routine. Make the full cash and annual-cost budgets work before treating lower energy spending as compensation for the purchase price. If neither the fifth place nor charging access is settled, solve those constraints before choosing a colour.
Use the UK car-payment comparison tool to organise actual finance quotations, keeping cash totals and energy assumptions separately documented. A calculated monthly payment is not evidence of a fuel saving, approval or future resale value.
Sources and method
This is a UK document-based comparison prepared from manufacturer material and an actual Boost cash selection on 19 October 2026 UTC. The BYD specification's four-seat, technical and dimension pages were read visually because digit extraction is imperfect. Dacia's current local Essential TCe 100 page and mechanical comparison define the selected petrol manual.
Catalogue and document dates identify their evidence, not a car already allocated to you. The dimensional subtraction is editorial arithmetic. Final delivered prices, annual mileage, energy rates, ownership quotations and delivery remain unclosed, so no total-cost winner or payback is claimed. No joint road, charging, safety or reliability test was conducted.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the UK Surf Boost have five seats?
- The UK guide consulted states four. Do not import the Spanish five-seat version into this order.
- Is the Sandero in this comparison automatic?
- No. Essential TCe 100 MY26 is the selected six-speed manual petrol version.
- Will electricity repay the purchase difference?
- That has not been established. Match delivered cash totals and your actual annual energy and ownership inputs first.
- Are the published prices complete matched dealer quotes?
- No. Boost has a selected cash summary; Dacia gives a recommended starting reference. Written delivered quotes remain necessary.
- Is the thirty-minute charge an entire motorway stop?
- No. It is a manufacturer ten-to-eighty-per-cent reference under stated conditions, excluding detours, queues and connection time.
