Start with the number of people who actually travel
If the car must carry five people, visit Renault 5 evolution 40 first. Its current UK technical page specifies five seats; the UK Dolphin Surf reference has four. That is a purchase requirement which a rear camera or an attractive monthly payment cannot replace. If four seats are enough, Surf Boost deserves the same family trial because its published parking camera and electric front-seat adjustment may make everyday use easier.
Do not assume that five doors make either car a five-seater. Nor should the newer five-seat Surf specification announced for Spain be applied to the British order. Check the seating and restraints on the UK car offered, then bring the passengers and child seats you actually need. If the fifth place is occasional rather than daily, decide how you would cover those journeys before treating the four-seat option as sufficient.
Boost 43.2 and evolution 40 are separate from the versions above them
The UK BYD manufacturer reference identifies Surf Boost with a 65 kW front motor, 43.2 kWh LFP battery and four occupants. Comfort uses the larger motor and adds equipment; Active has the smaller battery. Neither completes the specification of Boost. Lookers currently advertises the exact 65 kW Boost 43 kWh five-door automatic as a brand-new car to order. That is an ordering route, not proof of an allocated vehicle or immediate delivery.
Renault currently offers evolution with the urban-range 40 kWh battery and 120 hp, or 90 kW, front-drive powertrain. The 52 kWh techno+, iconic five+ and Roland Garros+ configurations are different purchases. The technical page allows an evolution quotation and demonstration; we have not ordered or inspected a car. Have build specification, model year, colour, seats and delivery recorded in each proposal.

A dealer advert and a grant-inclusive starting price need different questions
Lookers displays £20,534.36 for the Boost against £21,975 RRP, alongside a separate £259 monthly PCP reference. The manufacturer media page still contains a £21,950 catalogue reference. Those amounts have different origins; none supplies our missing personal cash proposal with paint, registration and any charges confirmed. Do not subtract a dealer saving again from its already discounted advert.
Renault's current evolution starting figure is £21,495. Its configurator says the advertised prices include a £3,750 Electric Car Grant. Obtain the actual proposal with eligibility, grant treatment, paint, accessories, fees and delivery specified; this article does not determine an individual's grant entitlement or an unassisted OTR price. A price excluding metallic paint also needs the chosen colour cost.
For finance, match deposit, term, mileage allowance, APR, fees and final payment before comparing the amount paid over the contract. Neither a monthly headline nor two differently conditioned starting prices establish which purchase costs less.
Use the rear seats and boot together
Surf's manufacturer declares a 308-litre boot, extending to 1,037 litres with the rear seats folded. Renault's October brochure gives evolution 326 litres VDA including cable storage and tyre inflation kit, and 1,106 litres with the rear bench folded. We have not established a common packing method. Folded-seat totals do not describe a journey with those seats occupied.
Load the same buggy, bags or equipment while keeping the necessary passengers seated. In Renault, check whether the middle rear place and the child seats work together; five homologated seats do not promise comfortable space for every combination. In Surf, check that four places really cover the household's journeys.
BYD declares 3,990 mm body length; Renault gives 3,922 mm. The editorial difference is 68 mm. It is a reason to measure your space, not a parking result. Check the door opening, mirror clearance and loading position on the same driveway.

Boost has a rear camera; evolution does not borrow one from techno+
BYD's UK grade description gives Boost electric adjustment of the front seats, electrically folding mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and 16-inch alloy wheels. The rear camera and parking sensors are standard in the manufacturer reference. The 360-degree camera and heated front seats belong to Comfort; they are not included here because they appear in range photographs.
Renault's exact evolution technical page specifies rear parking sensors, manual-height front seats, automatic climate control, non-heated seats and a non-heated steering wheel. Its 10.1-inch system supports smartphone mirroring. The brochure places the rear camera and Google built-in in techno+, and the heated seats and wheel in iconic five+. Ask for the exact equipment list rather than describing evolution with that cabin.
Try the same phone, reversing view, demisting and climate tasks while stationary. Prefer the controls that work for you. Adaptive assistance and camera labels describe functions; they do not establish that the car can drive or park without supervision.

Keep the Renault range discrepancy and both charging windows
BYD quotes 200 miles combined WLTP for Boost. Renault's current pre-configurator advertises 194 miles WLTP for the 40 kWh urban-range car and retains a pending-homologation note, while its October 2026 brochure lists 197 miles WLTP for EV40. We have not resolved that difference. Do not select the more convenient reference to claim a motorway or winter winner.
Boost is quoted at 11 kW AC and 85 kW DC, with 30 minutes from 10 to 80%. Renault evolution is 11 kW AC and 80 kW DC; the brochure specifies 31 minutes from 15 to 80% for 40 kWh. The larger Renault battery's 100 kW figure is not this version. Different starting percentages, charger and battery conditions mean these minute figures do not measure the same stop.

Check the supply before buying the routine
Arrange an assessment of the actual parking place, supply, permissions, charger, protections and installation cost. An 11 kW AC rating requires an appropriate supply and does not make an ordinary domestic socket an 11 kW point. Renault's brochure lists its Mode 3 cable separately from optional domestic equipment. Confirm the connector, supplied cables and station compatibility for each ordered car.
For public charging, check access, payment, opening times and an alternative on the journeys you cannot postpone. Neither car was charged by us for this article. Annual electricity cost would require actual purchased energy including losses and your tariff, alongside insurance, maintenance and installation. We have not calculated a payback period from catalogue battery sizes or assumed that a headline range will be available in your traffic.
Resolve support and the applicable safety specification
Request vehicle and battery warranty terms, maintenance requirements, exclusions and the local service route for the exact car. BYD's media archive includes an updated battery-warranty announcement as well as older launch wording, so the applicable contract matters more than copying a launch headline. We have not established a comparable UK repair, parts-delay or resale dataset for this pair.
Both manufacturers describe braking and lane-related assistance, with grade differences in equipment. We have not verified a common crash-test comparison matched to both ordered UK configurations, or performed a crash or assistance test. Ask for applicable safety documentation and learn the system limits. A battery demonstration, foreign owner's story or a list of sensors is not a measured injury or reliability outcome for these cars.
China-side evidence
Foreign badges and owner reports do not change the UK seating requirement
The smaller BYD sold under other names and the UK Dolphin Surf must retain their own battery, seats, connection and equipment. A Chinese-market owner report can suggest a question to investigate, but cannot turn the four-seat UK reference into a five-seat car or add the Comfort equipment to Boost. The Spanish five-seat announcement likewise does not establish the British build.
No matched owner sample, complaint rate or repair-time dataset was obtained for these two UK selections. We do not infer reliability, resale or a crash result from an overseas review. Use the exact UK ordering documents and the actual offered car to resolve the details that would change the family decision.
Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.
Choose a workable small car, then complete the price comparison
Prioritise evolution when the fifth seat is necessary and its actual rear accommodation and boot pass your trial. Prioritise a Boost demonstration when four places are enough and its camera, seat adjustment and controls solve a recurring task. If the household or parking test fails, expand the UK alternatives rather than accepting the wrong seating arrangement for a finance offer.
This is documentary research using UK manufacturer and dealer material read on 19 October 2026 UTC. The 68 mm length difference is editorial arithmetic. There was no own driving, charging, luggage, winter-range, collision or reliability test, and no personal purchase quotation. The larger BYD Dolphin and the smaller Surf are different models; this question concerns Surf Boost and Renault 5 evolution.
Questions for the two UK quotations
- Does the UK Dolphin Surf Boost have five seats because it has five doors?
- The UK references consulted specify four occupants. Renault 5 evolution specifies five. Confirm the ordered UK car; the Spanish five-seat Surf specification is not assumed here.
- Does £21,495 for the Renault include the grant?
- The current configurator says its advertised prices include £3,750 Electric Car Grant. Individual eligibility, paint, fees and the complete OTR proposal remain to be confirmed.
- Does evolution have the camera and Google system shown in the brochure?
- The brochure places rear camera and Google built-in in techno+. The evolution technical page lists rear sensors and smartphone mirroring; it does not inherit the higher grade equipment.
- Which charges faster: thirty minutes or thirty-one?
- Those references cover different windows: Boost 10-80%, Renault 40 kWh 15-80%. They are not a common stop or our own charge test.
