BYD Dolphin Surf vs Hyundai Inster: which small EV suits UK life?
Dolphin Surf Boost is our starting value shortlist. Inster 02 49kWh MY27 earns its premium when the narrower body and sliding rear seats make your everyday parking or family load easier.
The verdict
Choose Dolphin Surf Boost first for a lower-budget four-seat EV if its practical fit and 200-mile WLTP reference meet your needs. Inster 02 49 kWh MY27 earns its extra spend when its narrower body and sliding rear seats solve a daily parking or loading problem. Confirm the exact Hyundai model year and written price before deciding.

Compare Boost with 02 49 kWh and separate Hyundai’s two model years
This comparison selects the UK Dolphin Surf Boost with the 43.2 kWh battery and Hyundai Inster 02 49 kWh MY27. Surf Active has the smaller battery, while Surf Comfort has a different power output and range. Inster 01,02, Cross and the 42 kWh versions are not interchangeable. Keep the exact version on every quote.
On 18 October 2026, the identified Lookers Surf Boost offer showed a cash price of £20,534.36, with terms running 7 October to 31 December 2026. That is the current cash field we read, rather than an older indexed summer amount or a monthly repayment. Ask for the final written total, colour, stock or factory-order timing and all offer conditions. We have not deducted an expired voucher or a finance contribution a second time.
Hyundai’s UK guide downloaded on the same day says pricing is effective from 1 October 2026. It separates MY26, available from stock only, from MY27. The MY27 Inster 02 49 kWh row lists £26,290 recommended OTR; Hyundai’s live trims page separately shows Inster 02 from £27,005. We have recorded that disagreement and cannot resolve your actual order price from the pages alone.
The two Hyundai references both sit above the identified BYD cash offer, by roughly £5,800 to £6,500. Those are different displayed price bases, not matched guaranteed transactions. Obtain an exact model-year delivered quote before deciding whether the Inster’s advantages are worth it. No additional grant, discount or finance benefit is assumed in those comparisons.
Use 223 miles for the selected Inster 02, rather than 01’s 229-mile headline
BYD’s UK table gives Surf Boost up to 200 miles WLTP combined. Hyundai’s current MY27 table gives the selected 02 49 kWh up to 223 miles, on its 17-inch wheels. The 229-mile Inster reference belongs to 01 49 kWh with different wheels. Surf’s city-cycle headline is also a different test from combined WLTP. Do not build a range advantage by mixing the most attractive number from each version.
The 23-mile combined-cycle difference is relevant for shortlisting, but neither figure promises your motorway or winter range. Map the longest regular day and a sensible arrival reserve. If both easily cover it and charge at home, the extra catalogue distance may have less value than the purchase-price difference. If your route pushes the Surf’s margin, investigate comparable real-world evidence for both exact versions.
Both selected specifications give 85 kW maximum DC charging and a reference of about 30 minutes from 10 to 80% under appropriate conditions. Hyundai describes that result using a 150 kW CCS supply, while separately stating the car’s 85 kW maximum. The charger’s label is not the car’s accepted peak. At a 50 kW supply, Hyundai quotes a longer 55-minute reference for the same window.
These are manufacturer references, not a shared charging test. Weather, battery preparation, starting charge and the actual charger can change the outcome. We would not pay the Inster premium because the supply used for its published test has a larger label, or declare a charging winner when both selected car references are similar.

A narrower car and sliding rear seats can be worth more than a bigger headline boot
The Surf’s UK manufacturer dimensions are 3,990 mm long and 1,720 mm wide, excluding mirrors. Inster’s current technical guide gives 3,825 mm and 1,610 mm for the selected body, also excluding mirrors. That makes the Inster 165 mm shorter and 110 mm narrower on those measures. In a tight urban bay or garage, test the actual door-opening clearance and mirror position rather than assuming either dimension alone settles access.
BYD lists 308 litres of luggage capacity behind the seats. Inster 02 lists 238 to 351 litres with the rear seats up, reflecting its sliding seat arrangement. The larger Inster number is not free space with every passenger in exactly the same position. Move the seats through their usable range with the people who will sit there and see whether your load still fits.
Both current UK specifications used here list four seats. A household needing five should recognise that before comparing finance payments or luggage. Fit the child seats, set the front seats for the regular occupants and bring the pram or awkward bags. The most useful result is whether the actual car carries your household safely and comfortably, not which catalogue has the largest maximum.
Surf Boost is our value-first shortlist when that test works. Inster 02 earns a serious look when its narrower footprint or adjustable passenger/load trade-off makes a repeated daily task easier. We have not conducted that loading exercise ourselves, so the recommendation remains conditional on your practical check.
Compare the whole policy and insure the exact model year
BYD’s current UK warranty update gives six years/150,000 km for basic vehicle cover. Hyundai publishes a five-year unlimited-mileage new-vehicle warranty, subject to its terms. A lower-mileage buyer keeping the car for six years has a different priority from someone covering a large distance annually. The headline years alone do not establish which policy is more useful for your use.
Battery cover is a separate policy with its own distance and capacity conditions. Obtain the exact booklets and warranty start date before paying a deposit, and request model-specific service and insurance quotes. We do not infer a reliability rate or equal repair convenience from the warranty wording.
The identified Surf Boost dealer technical table lists insurance group 14A. Hyundai’s October guide lists 21D for the selected MY27 Inster 02 49 kWh, while its older MY26 row gives 23D. These published references show why the version matters. They do not promise that a particular insurer will offer cover or that the lower group will produce your cheaper premium. Supply the exact delivery specification to insurers.
For a company car, use the correct current P11D and tax-year data through payroll or the fleet provider. The Hyundai guide retains historic tax-year column labels, so we have not treated a printed monthly tax example as your current tax bill. Personal purchase and company-car cost comparisons require different inputs.
China-side evidence
Match Surf evidence to the UK version before importing an owner conclusion
The Surf specification used here is the UK Boost with its 43.2 kWh battery and 200-mile combined WLTP reference. Another market’s battery, seat configuration, software or charging equipment may differ. A similarly named car or a more recent overseas announcement is not proof that a UK dealer will supply that specification on your order.
We have not collected an independently verified, matching Chinese owner cohort that establishes a UK reliability rate, complaint frequency or measured winter range. Any such evidence would need the model year, battery, software, operating conditions and source checked before it affected the verdict. The recommendation here rests on the stated UK purchase references and the practical packaging differences. It does not transfer an overseas owner’s experience into a manufacturer figure.
Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.
How to make the final decision
This is a desk-based comparison checked on 18 October 2026. We read current UK manufacturer material and the identified BYD dealer offer, and downloaded Hyundai’s guide. The file’s web search metadata still described an April issue, but its actual cover and price page say October 2026. We inspected the rendered MY27 technical and price tables and preserved the MY26 distinction.
Auto Express has independently twin-tested Surf and Inster. That is relevant comparative context and search evidence, not a CathayEV road test or a source for today’s prices. Our demand evidence is local Surf-model search exposure combined with that real UK comparative result; we do not claim measured monthly volume for this exact pair.
Get the two current delivered quotes, check seats and luggage with the same household, and test the narrow parking situation that matters to you. Choose Surf Boost when it meets those needs at the lower total. Choose Inster 02 when the actual fit and flexible layout justify the confirmed premium. No unperformed road, charging or reliability test is implied.
