Seal U DM-i Comfort vs Tiguan Match eHybrid: boot, charging and the UK quote

Both are UK plug-in-hybrid family SUVs. Match has the larger declared PHEV boot; Comfort brings documented seat equipment. Compare current contracts, not old list prices or finance headlines.

The verdict

Seal U DM-i Comfort for documented comfort equipment and a lower historical list-price position; Tiguan Match eHybrid for a larger declared plug-in-hybrid boot and a more compact body. Obtain current like-for-like quotes.

Short answer: compare what your family carries, then compare the contract

If you need a plug-in hybrid family SUV and can charge it regularly, shortlist both the BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort and the Volkswagen Tiguan Match eHybrid. The BYD UK specification identifies a generous set of front-seat and convenience equipment. Volkswagen's current UK Tiguan page identifies Match as an orderable plug-in-hybrid trim and says the eHybrid boot is approximately 490 litres, against 425 litres in the BYD's published specification. That gap could matter for a pushchair or holiday bags, but the opening shape and your actual kit matter more than a laboratory volume. I would not call either car cheaper to own on an old comparison price or a short-term finance headline. Drive the exact versions, test the load with the rear seats occupied, and obtain two current all-in offers under the same payment method.

Why this is a real UK shopping comparison

The UK GSC snapshot ending 15 October shows search impressions for Seal U DM-i against Tucson, Sportage, Kuga and MG HS plug-in hybrids. Those observations support a UK buyer question about this PHEV class; they are not a measured search volume for the Tiguan pair. A UK road test published in January 2025 compared Seal U DM-i Comfort with Tiguan eHybrid Match directly, establishing that the two are plausible alternatives. Its prices, tax and test experience belong to that dated test, not to an October 2026 showroom quote. The current BYD and Volkswagen UK product paths independently confirm that both model families remain commercially offered. Our question is narrower than the old test's winner: which configuration works when five seats, charging and present-day payment terms are put on the same sheet?

China-side evidence

Keep the UK trims and model years separate

This guide compares the UK Seal U DM-i Comfort plug-in hybrid with the UK Tiguan Match eHybrid. It does not use a pure-electric Seal U sold elsewhere or a Tiguan petrol mild hybrid. The BYD UK PDF is an older specification with separate Boost, Comfort and Design columns, so the Comfort column is the source for its identified equipment and battery. Volkswagen warns that factory-order specifications, stock vehicles and displayed imagery can differ by model year. A photograph of a higher trim is not proof of what Match includes. Ask each retailer to print the vehicle code, build year, battery, fitted options and delivery date. If the quote changes trim or powertrain, the scorecard must be rebuilt rather than silently transferring equipment and figures.

Where included, owner reports and complaints are individual accounts, not representative surveys; recalls apply only to the vehicles and markets stated in each notice. Check the source, market and date of each claim.

Both can be shopped in Britain; stock is a separate question

BYD's current UK Seal U page advertises a retail order window from 7 October to 31 December 2026 for its finance programme. Volkswagen's current UK configurator marks Tiguan Match as plug-in-hybrid available, links to stock and offers a test drive. These paths establish local commercial availability, not a particular vehicle in your postcode or a guaranteed delivery week. Ask the retailers whether the proposed car is factory-order or identified stock, which model year it is and when you can inspect it. If the VW stock car is an earlier specification, verify the equipment rather than relying on the latest configurator. If the BYD is a different trim, recheck its electric range and cabin features against that trim's specification.

The finance headlines do not tell you which car costs less

On 24 October, the BYD page advertises down to 1.9% representative APR on a 49-month personal contract purchase for Seal U models, subject to its stated order window and lender terms. Volkswagen's Tiguan page advertises a Halloween event: a 0% APR route with a maximum 36-month term and maximum 40% deposit, or an alternative 7.9% representative APR with a stated finance contribution, subject to an order by 2 November and registration by 31 December. Those are different contracts. A low rate can coexist with a larger deposit, final payment or car price. Do not subtract two monthly instalments and call the difference savings. Request cash on-the-road price, deposit, term, mileage, APR, every fee, optional final payment and total payable for the exact cars; then compare insurance and home-charger cost separately. Neither 2025 road-test price is today's quote.

Measure the parking place and fit the actual passengers

The BYD UK sheet lists 4,775 mm in length and 1,890 mm in width excluding mirrors. Volkswagen's current UK technical data places the Match eHybrid at 4,539 mm long and 1,842 mm wide excluding mirrors. Those declared figures favour the Tiguan in a short or narrow bay, but still confirm the quoted vehicle code and dimensions. Measure garage width as well as length, include mirrors and allow the doors to open beside a wall. Put adults in front, set their normal driving position and then fit children and seats behind them. Check the centre position, front passenger child-seat rules, belt buckles and how easy the doors are to use in your real bay. No brochure proves that your three child seats will fit or that the boot lid clears your garage door.

The Tiguan's boot claim wins on litres, then needs a suitcase test

BYD's UK specification gives the Seal U DM-i 425 litres with the rear seats up. Volkswagen's current UK Tiguan FAQ gives approximately 490 litres for the eHybrid; it separately gives a larger figure for the non-plug-in Tiguan with its rear bench slid fully forward. Do not borrow that non-PHEV figure for Match eHybrid. The nominal advantage for the VW is about 65 litres, but the brands' measurement conventions and load shapes are not a joint luggage trial. Keep all five seats usable, then load your pushchair, wheelchair, dog crate or suitcases through both openings. Inspect the load lip, parcel shelf, charging-cable storage and whether the boot lid has room to operate where you park. A shallower but squarer boot can beat a bigger number for one family's equipment.

Electric range matters only if your charging pattern supports it

The BYD UK Comfort specification is the larger-battery Seal U DM-i variant; Volkswagen offers Tiguan eHybrid as the plug-in-hybrid powertrain in the current UK line-up. A January 2025 head-to-head reported similar official electric ranges for the then-tested cars, but those numbers cannot simply be pasted onto a differently built or newly homologated October 2026 vehicle. Ask each seller for the current WLTP electric-range and fuel-consumption document tied to the quoted version. WLTP is a comparison test, not a promise of motorway miles in winter with passengers and heating. More important, calculate how many of your weekly trips can end at a dependable charging socket. Without regular charging, the attraction of a PHEV electric range shrinks and you should compare its petrol operation and a conventional hybrid before signing.

Start with your wallbox and route, not the brochure peak

Both plug-in hybrids need mains charging to deliver regular electric driving. Before shopping for a headline charging time, establish whether your home has a suitable dedicated supply, whether your employer's socket can be used and what public chargers on your routine route cost. Request the AC and DC charging capability, connector and included cable for the exact quoted car; do not assume the same lead is bundled with every trim or stock unit. A peak power on a brochure is not the rate you will see throughout a session. Compare timings only when the start and end state of charge, charger output, battery temperature and model variant match. If you cannot reliably plug in, test-drive with a low battery and ask for a credible fuel figure under the same conditions rather than buying on weighted plug-in consumption alone.

Comfort kit and driving aids need a version-specific demonstration

The UK BYD sheet lists heated and ventilated electrically adjustable front seats, electric tailgate, 360-degree camera and assistance systems for Comfort. Volkswagen describes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, Area View, rear camera and Easy Open & Close tailgate on its current Match page. That makes both more useful to inspect than a generic SUV equipment chart, but the VW itself warns that images can show options and that stock can represent another model year. Ask the sales teams for standard-versus-optional lists on the specific cars and try the climate controls, cameras and parking assistance before purchase. Safety-assist names do not establish equal performance or an identical crash-test result. This guide has not conducted its own braking, crash or assistance test.

Ask what happens after delivery

A long advertised warranty does not tell you how soon a dealer will repair a fault, and a familiar badge does not establish a cheaper policy for your address. Ask for the vehicle, battery and hybrid-component warranty documents, mileage caps, degradation conditions and service intervals applicable to your vehicle identification number. Get local insurance quotations for each exact trim and driver, and check whether your preferred workshop can diagnose the high-voltage system. Request the cost and timing of scheduled servicing and whether a courtesy car or roadside recovery is included. Do not use a 2025 ownership score or a different country's guarantee as a current UK contract. Record the written terms alongside the all-in purchase price before treating either car as better value over three or five years.

What we checked, and what remains unmeasured

This is a documentary buying comparison updated on 24 October 2026. The current UK BYD product page and its published UK specification establish the Seal U's commercial path and Comfort features. The current Volkswagen UK product and configurator pages establish the Tiguan Match eHybrid path, described equipment and eHybrid luggage figure. The UK Auto Express head-to-head is used to show a real pair in buyer consideration and to date, not to launder its January 2025 prices or road impressions into 2026 measurements. The GSC signal is for the UK Seal U plug-in-hybrid comparison cluster, not measured monthly demand for this exact pair. We have not driven these two current cars together, weighed fuel use, measured charging, checked a specific insurer or obtained matched live retailer quotes. Those limits are decision tasks, not invented zeros.

The decision I would make at the two dealerships

I would start with the Tiguan Match eHybrid if five people, a pushchair and holiday bags need to travel together: its current UK page quotes about 490 litres for the PHEV boot and Match has useful cabin equipment. I would start with Seal U Comfort if heated and ventilated electric front seats and the BYD layout are priorities and 425 litres passes a real load test. I would switch that tentative order after driving both on the same roads, parking both in my actual space and reviewing two complete quotes. The advertised VW finance event expires sooner than BYD's stated retail window, so set the quote dates clearly; do not let a deadline replace the fit test. If you have no dependable place to plug in, revisit the choice against a full hybrid as well as these two PHEVs. More UK alternatives are in the UK comparison index.

Questions to take to the showroom

Is the Tiguan boot always 652 litres? No: Volkswagen's UK FAQ puts the eHybrid at approximately 490 litres and describes 652 litres for another configuration. Does a 0% Volkswagen finance banner beat 1.9% BYD finance? Not by itself: the offers have different terms, deposits, deadlines and vehicle prices. Compare total payable and a cash quote for the exact trims. Is the BYD Comfort's published kit guaranteed on any stock car? No: confirm the vehicle code and equipment in writing. Can the old Auto Express test settle today's price or tax? No: it was published in January 2025. Will 77 or 78 WLTP electric miles be my winter motorway result? No: request the current vehicle-specific homologation, then allow for conditions and your charging routine.
