BYD Sealion 7 Premium vs Tesla Model Y Premium RWD: the NZ$70k family EV decision

A New Zealand family choice after on-road costs: compare the exact RWD versions, WLTP, chargers, luggage, towing approval, ANCAP, warranty and the road-user charge both EVs pay.

The verdict

Test the Model Y Premium RWD first if its live trip planner and NZ$67,900 vehicle headline suit your routes and final quote. Test the Sealion 7 Premium first if V2L, its cabin controls and local support suit you better. Both pay the same base BEV RUC rate; neither has a proven delivered-price or real-range win.

Buy the BYD Sealion 7 if

Why this pair belongs on a Kiwi shortlist

New Zealand registration reporting based on NZTA data shows 125 Sealion 7s registered in September 2026, fifth in the displayed all-BEV model table, and 533 from January through September. The rank is not an exhaustive Chinese-only Top 10 and does not identify Premium trim buyers. A New Zealand Google Trends comparison checked on 26 October gave Sealion 7 a rounded relative 90-day average of 1 against Model Y's 5 in the selected five-term panel; this is weak normalized interest, not monthly search volume. CathayEV's returned New Zealand Search Console sample for 18 September to 15 October has no pair row and cannot measure national searches. Trade Me Motors' 2026 Model Y review names Sealion 7 as its closest sales-chart rival; a New Zealand head-to-head video also compared the pair in 2025. That video does not supply today's variants or prices. This is class B selection: a measured local popular Chinese model plus local comparative intent, with no measured exact-pair query volume. Our question is a NZ$70k family purchase after on-road costs and road-user charges, separate from our existing Sealion 7 versus AWD bZ4X towing decision.

Two current local RWD versions and an incomplete price comparison

BYD NZ presently advertises the Sealion 7 Premium rear-wheel drive from NZ$68,990 MSRP plus on-road costs, with a test-drive route. Its 10 March specification PDF carries an older NZ$67,990 number; use the current brand page for the headline and ask a dealer for an updated written quote. Tesla NZ's current configurator displays Model Y Premium rear-wheel drive at NZ$67,900, 466 km WLTP and an estimated November-December 2026 delivery. A crawled South Island private-registration checkout showed NZ$70,257 drive-away with delivery, registration and a first 1,000-km RUC licence, but that sample bore a referral and particular choices; it is not an unconditioned national quote. The NZ$1,090 difference between the two vehicle headlines does not compare matching drive-away totals. Tesla also shows a NZ$660 mobile-charger option and says charging equipment is not included; BYD's supplied accessories should be confirmed for the chosen VIN. Match postcode, registration class, paint, wheels, charger, delivery, order fee, accessories and any promotion in two signed quotes before ranking price. Neither an advertised weekly lease amount nor a stock discount is cash-equivalent to these headlines.

A 16-km WLTP gap cannot settle a Kiwi winter trip

The BYD NZ technical table identifies Premium's 82.56-kWh pack, 230-kW rear motor, 482-km WLTP combined range and 6.7-second 0-100 km/h sprint. A teaser on the same brand page rounds range to 480 km; the technical table's 482 km is used here. The Tesla configurator quotes Premium RWD at 466 km WLTP and 5.9 seconds. BYD's 16-km laboratory lead is modest relative to speed, cold, rain, wind, tyre choice, terrain and passengers. Tesla is faster on these published acceleration figures. Tesla's general Model Y page defaults to Long Range AWD with 600 km and a fast-charge claim; those must not be attributed to this 466-km RWD. Tesla's local configurator does not provide a matched usable battery-capacity figure, so pack arithmetic cannot establish an efficiency winner. Plan a regular highway leg with a safe arrival reserve in both systems and ask to drive the exact wheel/tyre versions. We have no matched NZ winter road test for these two trims.

Charging access beats a peak-kW headline

BYD NZ states up to 150 kW DC and 11 kW AC for Sealion 7, with vehicle-to-load output available through an adaptor. The AC maximum needs a suitable supply and the DC maximum is not a sustained charge curve. Tesla's New Zealand Supercharger support explains how the car's Trip Planner navigates to sites, shows site information and recommends charge levels along a route. It also says some sites can serve other EVs, with availability checked in Tesla's app; a BYD owner should never assume all Superchargers are open or all are exclusive. Prices vary by site and time and can include congestion fees, so a Tesla network stop is not automatically the cheapest. Test the actual home/work charger and holiday corridor before ordering, including connector, app registration, access hours, backup stop, cost and queue risk. Tesla's general AWD 'km in 15 min' headline is not evidence for Premium RWD, and no matched 10-80% charging time or NZ route uptime was verified for this pair.

The pram test is more useful than unlike boot litres

BYD NZ gives the Sealion 7 Premium a 4,830-mm body length, 1,925-mm body width, 2,930-mm wheelbase, 500-litre rear boot and 58-litre front boot. Tesla's current local Model Y page lists 4,792-mm length: a 38-mm smaller exterior length on paper. It states 1,982 mm width with mirrors folded and 2,129 mm extended, which cannot be ranked against BYD's 1,925-mm body width. Tesla's 2,138-litre cargo total is likewise not a rear-seat-up volume comparable with the BYD's 500 litres. If one vehicle must carry a pram, two child seats, a week's luggage and a still-usable passenger seat, fit all of them to both demonstration cars. Measure parking access, lift-over height, rear door opening and cabin comfort yourself. Neither a longer wheelbase nor a larger maximum cargo total proves easier daily packing.

Do not buy a tow vehicle from a generic model page

BYD's dated NZ grade sheet gives Premium a 750-kg braked trailer rating; the Performance version's 1,500 kg cannot be transferred to Premium. Tesla's New Zealand owner's manual describes a five-seat Model Y family maximum of 1,588 kg for specified wheel and occupant conditions and says the permitted trailer and tongue weights depend on the car's tyres and loading. That manual maximum is a useful screening question, not the exact local VIN's legal plated rating or a fitted towbar. Ask the sellers for the order-specific tow approval, approved hardware, ball load, payload after five occupants, trailer's actual laden mass and warranty terms. Range with a trailer was not measured and should be planned with a larger reserve. For a family that tows regularly, the apparent manual difference warrants a dealer document check before it can become a buying verdict.

Inspect screens and small ownership details on the exact cars

BYD NZ highlights a 10.25-inch driver display, rotating 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a V2L discharge adaptor and a broad comfort list. Its general feature panels may mix grades, so confirm Premium-specific seat and display equipment on the order sheet rather than importing Performance-only items. Tesla's current NZ Model Y page shows a 16-inch centre touchscreen and 8-inch rear touchscreen for the Premium family. Tesla's configurator makes the mobile charger an extra and says no charging equipment is included. These details can matter more than a nominal screen-inch difference if the family uses phone navigation, children use the rear screen or an apartment owner needs a portable cable. In a stationary demo, pair your actual phones, adjust climate, test parking view and check where the charging cable will live. V2L is not proof the BYD can serve as a compliant house backup, and Tesla's optional assisted-driving packages are not assumed to be included.

Both ANCAP five-star results need a build check

ANCAP's 2025 Sealion 7 five-star assessment covers the stated New Zealand variants. Its current 2025 Model Y five-star assessment covers the five-seat two-row car built from February 2025 and sold from May 2025; it does not automatically cover the six-seat Model Y L or a 2022-rated predecessor. The overall star count is not proof that both have identical child-restraint geometry or intervention tuning. Take your restraints and test rear seating, visibility, parking alerts and driver-assistance settings on the offered build. Ask for the VIN and standard-safety schedule when a discounted stock car is proposed. We have not independently crash-tested either one.

Calendar years, kilometres and actual repair support

The current BYD NZ page advertises six years or 150,000 km of vehicle warranty and eight years or 160,000 km on the traction battery. Tesla NZ publishes five years of basic coverage without a kilometre limit, and eight years or 160,000 km for the Model Y Premium RWD battery and drive unit with at least 70 per cent capacity retention, subject to its terms. BYD's extra basic-warranty calendar year may suit modest-distance ownership; Tesla's unlimited basic kilometres may suit a driver covering very high annual distance. Neither headline settles the service schedule, exclusions, local parts, nearest approved high-voltage shop or appointment wait. Request each VIN warranty booklet and a nearby service appointment estimate. Roadside-assistance terms and courtesy transport should be priced and checked separately. No observed repair-time advantage is claimed.

Both pay road-user charges; electricity and quotes decide the rest

NZTA currently prices the standard Type 1 light two-axle distance licence at NZ$76 per 1,000 km including GST. Both of these electric SUVs would ordinarily need RUC in the light-vehicle class, so this is a shared line, not a Tesla or BYD advantage. At an illustrative 15,000 km per year, the base distance charge is NZ$1,140 before administration; an online NZTA app purchase adds NZ$12.44 per licence at the checked rate, and fees can vary by purchase method and number of licences. For energy, an example 20 kWh/100 km from the wall would need 3,000 kWh a year before any extra losses; NZ$0.25/kWh would cost NZ$750, while NZ$0.60/kWh would cost NZ$1,800. The two tariffs and consumption are assumptions, not either car's test or an actual NZ charger quote. Insert your own home/public mix, insurance, tyres, servicing, registration, depreciation, finance and charging-equipment costs. A device that is not included or a different RUC licence purchase pattern can overturn a small vehicle headline gap. No five-year ownership-cost winner can be claimed without real quotes and usage.

Who should take which test drive first?

For a family whose real intercity routes are well served by Tesla's live supported stops, begin with Model Y Premium RWD, then see whether its final local drive-away quote and paid charger equipment fit the budget. It is quicker on the makers' 0-100 km/h numbers. For a household already satisfied with nearby compatible charging and wanting BYD's V2L, driver display and longer basic warranty in years, begin with Sealion 7 Premium. The BYD's 16-km WLTP difference is too small to promise a real trip advantage; Tesla's generic AWD charging and cargo headlines cannot settle this RWD purchase. If you tow, obtain the exact plate and approved towbar rather than relying on a family-manual ceiling. Both share NZ$76/1,000 km base RUC, so focus on charger access, electricity price and all-in vehicle quote. Bring child seats and luggage, test a typical charge stop, ask both sellers for VIN-level paperwork and compare written delivered cash and finance terms before paying a deposit. This is a sourced desk analysis, not our matched NZ road test.

China-side evidence

Do not transplant a China-market Sealion 07

The BYD in this comparison is the New Zealand Premium RWD shown on the local distributor page and dated grade sheet. A Chinese Sealion 07 price, CLTC range, battery configuration, software feature or owner complaint may refer to a different car. None is substituted for New Zealand specifications or owner outcomes here. We do not have a matched NZ owner cohort for repair time or long-term degradation of these exact versions. Check the NZ VIN, written equipment and local warranty, and treat overseas anecdotes as questions to ask rather than measured evidence for a purchase.

Where included, owner reports and complaints are individual accounts, not representative surveys; recalls apply only to the vehicles and markets stated in each notice. Check the source, market and date of each claim.

Sources, dates and open questions

Checked on 27 October 2026: current New Zealand BYD and Tesla version pages, BYD March grade sheet for tow rating, Tesla owner's manual for its conditional family ceiling, Tesla charging and warranty help, NZTA RUC table, both 2025 ANCAP reports, September 2026 NZTA-derived registration coverage, the dated NZ Trends panel and local comparator results. The model-level registrations support interest but do not rank all Chinese EVs; the Trends index and the site's small GSC sample do not give exact-pair monthly volume. The 2025 NZ pair video is intent evidence only. Prices are different headline bases, the NZ Tesla referral-bearing checkout sample is not a universal quote, Tesla AWD range/charge statements are excluded, and BYD's March price is superseded. We did not obtain matched road consumption, charge curve, live tariff, two same-postcode orders, insurance, actual trailer approval or measured pram fit. Recheck all stock, prices, RUC rates, charge-site access and equipment before ordering.

Five questions to settle before paying

Is the Model Y really cheaper than Sealion 7 in New Zealand?
Tesla's NZ$67,900 vehicle headline is NZ$1,090 below BYD's current NZ$68,990 MSRP plus ORC, but the on-road, delivery, equipment and finance bases are unmatched. Get two written same-postcode drive-away offers.
Does road-user charge favour either EV?
Normally no. NZTA's checked Type 1 light-vehicle base rate is NZ$76 per 1,000 km for both, plus the applicable licence administration fee.
Can the BYD use a Tesla Supercharger?
Some NZ Tesla sites admit other EVs, not every site. Confirm the exact stop in Tesla's app or map, connector, access and current price before planning it for the BYD.
Can this Sealion 7 Premium tow a 1,500-kg trailer?
The dated NZ grade sheet assigns Premium 750 kg braked and Performance 1,500 kg. Never use the Performance rating for Premium. Check the actual VIN, towbar and loaded trailer.
Does Tesla's 2,138-litre cargo number beat BYD's 500-litre boot?
Those numbers use different cargo definitions. Bring the real pram, child seats and bags to both cars and compare the usable seat-up space.
