MG4 Urban Essence 54 vs Mazda3 GSX: charging, RUC and the family hatchback

A New Zealand electric or petrol automatic hatch: exact local versions, delivered-price limits, family loading and the RUC line that an electricity-only budget misses.

Choose the routine first: home-charged MG or petrol Mazda

Put MG4 Urban Essence 54 first if reliable charging fits where you already park and its actual cabin and loading arrangement suit the household. Put Mazda3 GSX first if you want a five-seat automatic hatch without planning charging stops. Neither recommendation depends on pretending their similar headline prices are two identical drive-away quotes.

The selected MG is the New Zealand MY26 battery-electric Essence 54. The Mazda is the current local GSX with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and six-speed automatic; it is not a hybrid, Homura or a 2.5-litre alternative. Both have local sales routes. This is a buying comparison from documents and current offers read on 19 October 2026 UTC, without a joint road test.

For either, take the family and difficult luggage to the demonstrator. For the MG, make the charging and RUC budget work before counting a saving. For the Mazda, price the fuel routine and total delivered order. If one fails a practical requirement, a small-looking difference between from-prices should not rescue it.

Similar starting references still need equivalent delivered quotes

Farmer Autovillage's current New 2026 range lists MG4 Urban EV Essence 54 from NZ$38,990 plus on-road costs. The local technical guide identifies MY26 Essence 54. This establishes an authorised local offer and exact specification reference, not a particular colour in your driveway or a final cash invoice.

Mazda's current New Zealand page lists GSX from NZ$38,890. Its linked July 2026 brochure identifies GSX as SKYACTIV-G 2.0 front-wheel drive. We have not established that the Mazda headline includes the same registration, delivery and other charges excluded from MG's plus-ORC reference. The hundred-dollar-looking headline gap therefore does not decide which car is cheaper to take home.

Request two written cash totals for identified vehicles, including paint, registration, delivery, accessories and any other charges. For MG add the proposed charging equipment and installation separately. Compare financing afterwards using deposit, fees, interest, term and final payment, rather than taking a lower weekly amount as a lower purchase cost.

Have the order state the car's model year, grade, battery or engine, options and collection date. The Mazda brochure's publication month is not proof of the offered car's model year, and a current dealer page does not reserve an MG VIN. Exact stock allocation and delivery remain unconfirmed.

An electric 54kWh hatch against a 2.0-litre petrol automatic

The New Zealand MG specification lists a 54kWh LFP battery, 118kW motor and 250Nm for its electric propulsion. Its 405km combined WLTP reference belongs to Essence 54. Do not transfer a different MG4's battery, rear-drive layout or charging specification because the badges share MG4.

The Mazda brochure gives the selected 1,998cc petrol engine 114kW and 200Nm, front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic. Its recommended fuel is 91RON or greater, up to E10. The GSX is not the old Takami mild hybrid or a 2.5-litre SP25 or Homura. A generic page image or a feature panel for a higher grade cannot define the car being quoted.

Power figures do not establish ride quality or a family overtaking result. Test driving position, controls and low-speed response in each, using a representative load within the vehicle's limits. Our recommendation is about an energy routine and practical fit that you can check, not a promise that one feels faster or more comfortable.

405km WLTP does not remove the charging task

The MG's 405km WLTP combined is a laboratory reference. Speed, weather, heating, passengers and the arrival reserve affect your trip. Start with the journey most likely to stretch the car, identify actual sites and an alternative, and check access, connector, payment and opening hours. A site on a map is not a guarantee that a working connector will be free when you arrive.

The local guide specifies a combined Type 2 connection, up to 87kW DC and a 6.6kW onboard AC charger. Its thirty-minute DC estimate is from ten to eighty per cent at 25°C. It is not a complete stop including detour or queue, and a larger station rating does not raise the vehicle limit. References to a faster charger or another market's MG are not substituted here.

Home charging is useful when the car can replenish energy during time it would already spend parked. Check the supply, circuit, protection and cable route with an installer, and settle permissions for a shared or rented space. If that is unresolved, include the public-charging routine in both time and money.

Mazda3 does not require an external charging point. Its routine is petrol stops, which can suit changing routes and uncertain parking. That simplicity does not prove lower operating costs; it removes a practical task that some households cannot reliably perform.

Budget for RUC as well as electricity

The current NZTA rates table lists NZ$76 including GST per 1,000km for the relevant light powered two-axle RUC category up to 3,500kg. The MG guide's gross vehicle mass is 2,258kg. The rates page also lists a NZ$12.44 online or NZTA-app administration fee per licence. Those are separate lines: a transaction fee is not the distance rate.

Your cash outlay depends on the licence distance bought, existing distance remaining and the number of transactions, not just a division of annual mileage. Keep the applicable RUC and licence requirements alongside the charging budget. Do not import UK vehicle-tax assumptions or compare the MG with petrol as though electricity were its only road-use expense.

For energy, use your actual distance, paid electricity at home and publicly, and a realistic wall-energy requirement that includes charging losses. Mazda's New Zealand reporting reference is the parenthesised 6.6L/100km 3P-WLTP value in its brochure. This is a converted reporting result, not a new physical test conducted by us. The document retains the underlying laboratory provenance separately: its footnote explains the NZTA formula used to convert NEDC to three-phase WLTP. The reporting reference does not guarantee your consumption.

No personal tariff, fuel price, mileage or measured use has been supplied, so we publish no annual saving or payback. Add insurance, servicing, tyres, finance and any charging installation to the proper ownership budget. A nominal catalogue-price difference cannot tell you which total will be lower.

Try the opening and the rear seat, not just the litre total

MG declares 382 litres with the seats in place and lists 98 litres of underboot storage separately. Mazda's 295-litre VDA reference is with all seats upright up to the window line. We have not established matching load boundaries or a common measuring procedure. Do not simply add the MG storage lines and translate the result into extra suitcases.

Take the pram, work bags or mobility aid, leave the passenger places you need in use and see where the charging cable will go. Check the tailgate opening and loading height, then sit the family behind the normal front-seat positions. Five-seat capacity does not prove that three restraints fit or that the centre place is comfortable for your passenger.

MG is listed at 4,395mm long and Mazda at 4,460mm. The 65mm difference is editorial subtraction of published exterior lengths, not a turning-circle or cabin-space measurement. Measure the actual gate, bay and door clearance. A shorter exterior and a larger declared boot can both look attractive on paper without solving the one awkward task that matters to your household.

Keep Essence and GSX separate from their flagship images

MG's Essence 54 guide lists heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a heat pump, a 360-degree camera and its specified driver-assistance package. Those are reasons to check the exact equipment in a demonstrator; they do not establish comfort, winter range or warning calibration on their own.

For Mazda, keep the GSX equipment list on the order. The current range also presents higher-grade Bose, seat and camera features; do not assume they belong to GSX. Try the controls, phone connection, rear visibility and restraint installation in both cars. Driver aids remain aids, and no crash-rating winner is awarded here from an unverified test configuration.

Ask for the vehicle and battery warranties, service schedules and assistance applying to the delivered units. Identify the workshop that will handle a fault and request maintenance and insurance prices. Dealer warranty headlines and another market's terms are not a local contract. We have no matched repair-time, depreciation or failure sample that supports a reliability winner.

How this New Zealand decision was prepared

The offer references are Farmer's current new-car range and Mazda NZ's current GSX page. The MG technical guide states MY26 and information correct at March 2026; Mazda's linked brochure is July 2026. Their relevant grade, technical, equipment and dimensional pages were read visually as well as through text. The document dates are retained, not converted into a fresh vehicle test or a guaranteed build year.

NZTA's current RUC rates and administration-fee table was actually read in a normal browser. The manufacturer's and dealer's figures retain their conditions. The length difference is editorial arithmetic, while the recommendations concern household use. There was no joint driving, charging, consumption, crash or reliability test and no stock reservation or finance application.

Match delivered quotes, test your family load and prove the charging plan before paying a deposit. If charging remains impractical, Mazda3 GSX is the clearer first visit. If it works and the MG's actual cabin and equipment solve your tasks, MG4 Urban Essence 54 deserves the first trial. That is a conditional shortlist, not an unsupported total-cost winner.

Frequently asked questions

Is this another MG4 battery version?
This comparison selects the local MG4 Urban Essence 54 BEV. Do not transfer batteries or specifications from another MG4; confirm the ordered drivetrain and unit with the retailer.
