MGS5 EV Essence 62 vs Kia EV3 Light SR: equipment and the right NZ build
Start with MG for heated seats and powered loading, Kia for a shorter body and dual-zone climate. Confirm the MG build and price before combining its new brochure with an older dealer offer.
Start with the equipment you will use, then confirm the MG build
I would start with the MGS5 EV Essence 62 if heated front seats, an electric driver's seat and a powered tailgate would earn their keep every week. The July 2026 New Zealand brochure gives this version a useful convenience package that EV3 Light SR does not match. I would put the Kia first if its shorter body and dual-zone climate control matter more, and the household is happy with manual cloth seats and no seat heating.
There is an important condition on that MG recommendation: the price and the car must belong to the same build. The current Ebbett listing combines a $52,990 plus on-road-cost reference with older motor and range figures. The MY26 manufacturer brochure describes a different specification. Joining the lower-looking price to the newer figures would create a deal we have not verified. Ask for that identity and the delivered quote before treating the MG as the cheaper choice.
Essence 62 and Light SR are the selections, not their better-equipped neighbours
The MG selected here is the rear-wheel-drive, 62 kWh Essence in the New Zealand MY26 brochure, which states that its data was current in July 2026. Its technical column lists 150 kW, 350 Nm and 450 km combined WLTP. The 49 kWh Essence column instead has 125 kW and 335 km. The cover, New Zealand warranty wording and specification disclaimer identify the local document despite the regional file host.
The live dealer's Essence 62 card still says 125 kW, 250 Nm and 425 km WLTP alongside $52,990 plus ORC. That conflict does not prove which hardware a particular stock car has. The manufacturer document also says it is a general guide rather than an offer for a particular vehicle. Require the quote to state build, model year and the applicable specification; do not decide that the dealer's car has received an upgrade just because the battery name is unchanged.
The Kia selection is Light Standard Range, front-wheel drive, with a 58.3 kWh gross NCM battery and a 150 kW motor. Earth, GT-Line, Light Long Range and GT have their own columns. Their heated or powered seats, heat pump and surround-view equipment do not become Light SR equipment through a shared gallery. Both brands have local sales or enquiry routes; no assigned VIN, stock allocation or delivery date was checked here.

Do not subtract the old MG card from the Kia price
Kia's current national table shows NZ$55,520 plus ORC for Light SR. That is a reference, not two complete cash proposals. The MG listing's NZ$52,990 plus ORC belongs with the conflicting older specification just described. We have not closed a current price for the selected MY26 MG, so we do not calculate a $2,530 saving or a price for each extra feature.
The Kia EV Confidence terms in the current specification page offer eligible vehicles $0 ORC, 15,000 km of Road User Charges and a $0 three-year/45,000 km service plan. Registration must occur between 1 October and 31 December 2026, while stocks last. It excludes demonstrators, government, used, fleet and rental purchases, cannot be combined with another special offer and may be withdrawn or changed. Ask the dealer to identify eligibility and every inclusion in the proposal. It is neither a cash rebate nor confirmation that any particular car can be delivered in time.
Compare the actual cash total including paint, accessories, registration and any remaining charges. If borrowing, ask for the same deposit and term and compare total repayments as well as fees. The expired July-September Kia promotion quoted in older reviews is not this October package. Neither the vehicle reference nor a service promotion settles insurance, electricity costs or depreciation.

The MG makes a clear comfort case; the Kia has its own daily-use advantages
The MG Essence column marks heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way electric driver's seat and a four-way manual passenger's seat. It also includes a powered tailgate with a foot-kick function, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera and a wireless phone charger. Those are concrete reasons to test it if cold starts, changing drivers or loading shopping are recurring tasks. It does not give the passenger an electric seat simply because the driver's seat is powered.
The Light SR columns list manual cloth front seats, a rear camera and front and rear parking sensors. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, surround-view monitoring, a wireless phone charger and a heat pump are not marked for Light SR. That does not make it unusable: dual-zone climate control, rear ventilation, navigation, phone integration and interior V2L with an exterior NZ-socket adaptor are documented. MG's brochure specifies single-zone automatic climate control and rear vents. Two people who prefer different temperatures may value the Kia more than a sunroof.
Try the controls, seat adjustment, tailgate and camera in the cars being quoted. A feature list cannot establish how easily you can lift a child, use a mobility aid or reach the screen. Check phone compatibility as well; a wireless charger is not a promise that every handset will work. Neither manufacturer's assistants replace an attentive driver.

The Kia is shorter; neither boot figure proves the family fit
MG's published length is 4,476 mm, against 4,300 mm for Light SR: Kia is 176 mm shorter. That gives you a reason to measure a tight parking space. Their listed widths, 1,849 and 1,850 mm, are effectively alike for this purpose; door opening and mirrors still matter. We have not demonstrated that either is easier to park or has the better turning circle on your driveway.
MG publishes 453 litres with the seats in place and 1,441 folded, without establishing a common method here. Kia labels its 460/1,251 litres VDA and lists a separate 25-litre front compartment. Seven nominal litres between the upright figures do not tell you which holds a pushchair, and a front compartment cannot enlarge the rear opening. Both have a split-fold rear seat; set the front seats for the actual occupants before testing the same bags and any child seats.
Both documents list a tyre repair or mobility kit. Do not plan a remote journey on an assumed full-size spare. Ask what is supplied, what the kit can repair and how roadside support applies to the journey. That is a more practical ownership check than ranking cabins by catalogue litres.
450 versus 436 km is not a measured trip advantage
The current MG brochure's 450 km combined WLTP belongs to the selected 62 kWh MY26 specification; Kia declares 436 km combined WLTP for Light SR. The 14 km catalogue difference does not guarantee a longer winter trip. MG's older 425 km dealer figure stays separate, and Kia's 58.3 kWh is explicitly gross: we do not infer a usable-energy advantage by subtracting the battery labels.
MG declares a 6.6 kW onboard AC charger, up to 150 kW DC and an estimated 19.3 minutes from 30 to 80% at 25°C. Kia lists up to 10.5 kW AC, approximately five hours 20 minutes from 10 to 100% on an 11 kW AC supply, and around 29 minutes from 10 to 80% at up to 100 kW DC. Those fast-charge intervals start at different percentages. The figures do not show that MG saves 9.7 minutes on an equivalent stop, or that either maintains its peak power throughout the session.
For home charging, first establish the supply, installation, included cable and time available overnight. A building's 11 kW socket does not make MG's onboard charger accept 11 kW. For regular intercity use, plan the route and a reserve using suitable stations rather than treating either laboratory range as your destination guarantee. No common route, charging curve or electricity bill was measured for this article.

Separate the warranty headline from the conditions
MG's New Zealand brochure describes seven years unlimited kilometres as standard for eligible personal-use vehicles, with a three-year MG service-activated extension taking coverage up to ten years or 250,000 km, whichever comes first. Fleet, government and rental exclusions and the full terms remain relevant. It is not an unconditional ten-year warranty that can simply be assigned to any stock car.
Kia's brochure summarises seven years/150,000 km for the vehicle and eight years/160,000 km for the high-voltage battery, whichever occurs first, under the programme's terms. Have each dealer attach the applicable coverage, battery-capacity conditions, servicing obligations and assistance to the exact order. These are contract summaries, not evidence of fewer faults or faster parts supply.
Both sources document airbags and driver assistance. We have not established a common applicable crash-test comparison for these exact delivered builds, measured assistant performance or obtained comparable local failure and resale data. A review's praise and an owner's story can suggest questions; neither substitutes for the local specification and the support contract.
What this comparison actually establishes
Sources were rechecked on 20 October 2026 UTC. The current downloads of the MG MY26 and Kia May 2026 brochures match the archived research files. The current Ebbett card and Kia table retain their prior visible content. MG's model page could not be reopened in this check; we do not present it as a successful new full-page reading. The manufacturer brochure and current dealer enquiry evidence are kept distinct from the earlier model-page reading.
The New Zealand Moku EV3 review explicitly discusses MGS5 Essence 62 as an alternative. We read its complete local comparison context, including its 4 August 2026 date. Its older MG price/specification and expired Kia promotion are not our current authorities. A small New Zealand-filtered search signal helps select the model topic; it does not measure monthly demand for this pair or predict results for this page.
This is buying research, not our own road, charging, crash or family-fit test. I would proceed with MG only after the quoted build and price match the desired equipment; I would proceed with Kia only after its manual-seat specification and current offer suit the household. If either quote changes the version, repeat those checks. The New Zealand guides can help broaden the shortlist when neither works.
Questions to settle before ordering
- Is the $52,990 MG listing a confirmed price for the new 150 kW specification?
- No. The current dealer card pairs that reference with 125 kW and 425 km WLTP. The July MY26 brochure lists 150 kW and 450 km for Essence 62. Obtain a build-matched current quote rather than combining the two.
- Does EV3 Light SR have heated seats and a powered tailgate?
- Those items are not marked for Light SR in the local table. It has manual cloth seats, a rear camera and front/rear sensors. Do not borrow Earth or GT-Line equipment.
- Does 19.3 minutes against 29 make MG the proven faster charging stop?
- No. MG quotes 30-80% at 25°C; Kia quotes 10-80% under its stated charging conditions. Different intervals and conditions do not measure a comparable stop.
- Is Kia offering 45,000 km of RUC with this purchase?
- The current October-December EV Confidence terms specify 15,000 km of RUC and a separate three-year/45,000 km service plan, subject to eligibility, registration, stock and exclusions. Do not reuse the older promotion.
