Omoda E5 EX vs Kia EV3 Light SR NZ: equipment and the complete offer

EX adds powered and heated conveniences; Light SR needs a complete quote with campaign conditions. Compare the actual grades and keep E5 specification conflicts visible.

Start with the conveniences you need, then compare the delivered offers

E5 EX deserves the first visit if powered front seats, heated rear seats, a 360-degree camera and powered tailgate would make your family routine easier. EV3 Light SR deserves the first visit if you are comfortable with manual cloth seats and a rear camera, and its layout, controls and complete purchase proposal work better for you. Do not buy the Light expecting the heat pump, powered tailgate or seat ventilation of a higher EV3 grade.

The Kia has the higher current vehicle reference, but its qualifying October-to-December campaign includes ORC, RUC and servicing benefits. Those need matching to your order rather than subtracting as cash. E5's current battery and motor descriptions also need resolving against the actual unit. Neither a six-kilometre difference between laboratory range labels nor a one-minute charging-time subtraction settles this choice.

EX and Light SR are the exact local selections

The national E5 page and Blackwells advertise EX from NZ$44,990 plus ORC, above BX. Kia's NZ table identifies Light SR at NZ$55,520 plus ORC, with front-wheel drive, 150 kW and a 58.3 kWh gross battery. Light LR, Earth, GT-Line and GT occupy separate columns. The local-inspection warning for GT is not a statement that Light SR is awaiting a local launch.

These are current NZ sales and test-drive routes, not allocations or delivery promises. Have the order name the grade, battery, build and model year, paint, equipment and expected registration date. In particular, a generic E5 specification and a picture of an EV3 GT-Line do not establish what will be delivered. We have not inspected or reserved either car.

EX adds conveniences that are absent from Light SR

EX's NZ equipment includes powered driver and front-passenger adjustment, a powered tailgate, 360-degree camera, Sony eight-speaker audio and a power sunroof with retractable shade. Blackwells explicitly assigns heated front and rear seats and a heated wheel to EX. Demonstrate them with the people who will use the car; an equipment advantage only helps if it solves a regular task.

The Light SR column in Kia's current specification table has manual front seats in cloth, rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines and front/rear parking sensors. It marks heated front seats, heated wheel, wireless phone charger and surround-view monitor absent. Powered tailgate and heat pump are also absent in Light SR. Front-seat ventilation belongs to higher grades, not a free inclusion at the Light's price.

Light SR still has dual-zone climate control, rear ventilation ducts, navigation, phone integration and six-speaker audio. Try the controls and connect your own phone, especially if a familiar function is important. If you need a Kia grade with the EX conveniences, obtain that grade's quote separately. Silently adding GT-Line equipment would change both the product and the financial question.

Match the campaign to registration, not just a price headline

NZ$55,520 minus NZ$44,990 is NZ$10,530 between two advertised vehicle references. It is not a difference between two complete delivered cash proposals. E5 excludes ORC, and Kia's table also says plus ORC while the separate Kia EV Confidence campaign can include zero ORC for a qualifying purchase. Keep both statements and have the dealer explain which applies to your order.

The current Kia terms cover registration from 1 October to 31 December 2026, while stocks last. They include zero ORC, 15,000 km of RUC and a zero-cost three-year/45,000 km service plan. Demonstrators, government, used, fleet and rental purchases are excluded, and the offer cannot be combined with another special offer. Kia can change or withdraw it. A planned delivery outside the registration window therefore needs a fresh written proposal.

Ask for the full cash total, paint, accessories, registration and other charges, together with the precise included benefits and their conditions. Do not turn RUC kilometres or a service plan into a further cash discount or assume every future service is covered. If financing, compare deposit, fees, term, final payment and total payable. We have no equivalent credit or ownership-cost study to show that either vehicle repays the reference difference.

Resolve E5’s source conflicts before making a battery argument

Omoda's current national base specification says 58.9 kWh, while Blackwells' current base says 61 kWh before EX additions. Kia explicitly labels 58.3 kWh as gross. There is no verified common usable-capacity basis, so those figures do not establish which car gives you more accessible energy. Nor do we invent a gross-versus-usable explanation for the E5 discrepancy.

Current E5 pages give 150 kW and 340 Nm, whereas the dated NZ MY25 sheet gives 155 kW and 288 Nm. Those are unresolved version or documentation differences, not permission to combine the largest power and torque values into one car. Ask for the specification tied to the EX offered if those details affect the decision.

E5's current headline is 430 km WLTP-EST; Light SR's table gives 436 km combined WLTP. The small nominal difference is not proof of six extra kilometres on a winter motorway trip. Load, weather, speed, battery condition and your arrival reserve matter. We have not completed a matched route, efficiency or battery-capacity test, and we do not compare Light LR's range at the SR price.

Twenty-eight and 29 minutes start at different charge levels

E5 currently advertises 28 minutes from 30% to 80%. Kia's Light SR figure is approximately 29 minutes from 10% to 80% on the stated SR charger reference of up to 100 kW; its 50 kW station example takes approximately 55 minutes for 10% to 80%. Subtracting the two fastest headlines would compare different energy windows, not establish a one-minute winner.

The E5 MY25 sheet gives a different 30-minute reference using a 130 kW station. That describes a station in the test reference, not a guaranteed vehicle peak. Older E5 sheets also contain different AC/DC specifications. Confirm the current EX's inlet, charging hardware and supplied equipment instead of using an older or overseas sheet to fill the gap.

Kia states an onboard AC maximum up to 10.5 kW, and approximately five hours twenty minutes from 10% to 100% on an 11 kW supply. Your home circuit may provide less. Obtain an installation assessment and check compatible public sites and alternatives for your actual routes. Neither rated power nor a manufacturer session includes every temperature, queue or charging loss.

Keep the passengers in place when trying the luggage

EV3 Light SR is listed at 4,300 mm long and 1,850 mm wide; the E5 page gives 4,424 mm and 1,830 mm. The Kia is shorter on these figures but not narrower. Check mirror conventions, door opening and the turn into your own parking area. A rear camera or surround-view image helps observation, not physical clearance.

Kia's table gives 460 litres VDA with seats up and 1,251 folded, plus a 25-litre front compartment. The dated E5 MY25 sheet identifies 300 litres VDA to the cargo cover. We have not established identical height and configuration limits for a common volume comparison. Do not turn the subtraction into a measured practical space advantage; bring the normal buggy, bags and child restraints instead.

Set the front seats first, retain the rear places you need and check buckle access, loading opening and whether the cover closes. Kia lists a temporary mobility kit. E5's dated MY25 sheet lists a full-size spare and excludes BX's front compartment on EX because of heat-pump placement; confirm the equipment on the current offered build. We have not performed this joint family-fit trial.

Separate a rating label, assistance and the contract

Kia's Light SR column lists forward collision avoidance, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic assistance, smart cruise with stop-and-go and lane assistance. It also cites a five-star ANCAP rating using the 2025 standard. Omoda markets assistance and a five-star label locally. We have not matched both proposed units to a common applicable assessment and protocol, so those labels do not support a safety ranking in this guide.

Have the seller explain the controls and operating limits. Assistance does not make either car autonomous or guarantee a successful intervention. Check the equipment and software actually installed, including the phone functions you will use; a specification entry or OTA promise is not a completed demonstration.

E5's detailed local material distinguishes seven-year vehicle and eight-year battery cover alongside a broader eight-year banner. Obtain the NZ documents for EX; its dated PDF's Australian links do not establish NZ contractual terms. Obtain the Kia warranty and full service-plan conditions too. The promotional plan does not prove reliability or cover every repair, and we have no comparable claims, repair-delay or resale study.

Choose the specification you will actually use

Choose E5 EX first if its powered access, heating and seating equipment make everyday use easier, the family fits and the seller closes its important build-specific uncertainties. Its lower vehicle reference is a reason to request a quote, not to overlook the battery and motor discrepancies or assume that all dated equipment is fitted to current stock.

Choose EV3 Light SR first if its manual-seat and rear-camera specification is enough, its layout works better for you and its complete proposal justifies the extra outlay. Verify campaign registration timing and inclusions before relying on them. If a heat pump, powered tailgate or heated seats are essential, this Light is not the Kia specification that answers your requirement. Compare the appropriate higher grade separately rather than buying on an image of it.

NZ sources, date and research limits

Current New Zealand model, dealer and specification sources were read on 20 October 2026 UTC: E5, Blackwells and Kia EV3. The linked E5 MY25 sheet keeps its document date, and the older MY24 sheet remains historical evidence rather than a current price or hardware authority. Current availability means there is a local sales route; no unit has been allocated through this research.

Driven Car Guide's 21 March 2025 NZ EV3 first drive explicitly lists Omoda E5 among its alternatives. Its launch prices and driving impressions are historical context, not our experience or today's quote. This guide contains no own driving, charging, luggage or ownership test. Use other buying guides with the relevant market and version in mind; the recommendations above remain conditional on the actual cars and offers.

Questions about EX and Light SR

Does EV3 Light SR include a heat pump and heated seats?
The current NZ Light SR column marks the heat pump, heated front seats, heated wheel and powered tailgate absent. It has manual cloth front seats. Higher-grade equipment must be quoted separately.
Are Kia’s zero ORC and the plus-ORC table contradictory prices?
The table is the vehicle reference. The separate qualifying campaign includes zero ORC, 15,000 km RUC and a three-year/45,000 km service plan, with registration and buyer conditions. Get the exact delivered proposal rather than combining or subtracting benefits as cash.
Does a 29-minute Kia session lose to E5’s 28 minutes?
No. Kia quotes approximately 29 minutes from 10% to 80%, while E5’s current claim starts at 30%. E5 also has dated hardware and time differences. No matched charging result has been established.
Is E5 definitely 61 kWh or 58.9 kWh?
The current dealer and national base descriptions differ, and EX inherits each base specification. Their capacity definitions and build correspondence have not been reconciled. Kia’s 58.3 kWh is explicitly gross, so it does not resolve the E5 discrepancy.
