OMODA 5 Knight petrol vs JAECOO E5 Pure: is charging worth the switch?

The petrol Knight starts at the lower OTR reference; E5 Pure needs dependable charging and a matched quote. Compare the exact UK versions without treating a PCP grant as a cash discount.

The verdict

Choose the OMODA 5 Knight petrol if the lower published purchase reference and a fuel-stop routine suit your household, particularly when dependable charging is missing. Put the JAECOO E5 Pure first if you can charge where the car regularly parks and want an electric SUV without relying on the advertised finance grant as a cash discount. Both need a test with your passengers and two properly itemised quotes. The OMODA 5 here is the petrol Knight, not OMODA E5 or the SHS-H hybrid; the JAECOO is E5 Pure, not JAECOO 7 or petrol JAECOO 5. That naming distinction changes the mechanics, price and daily routine. We have not driven the pair or proved that an energy saving will repay the purchase difference.

Which routine fits your household?

Published OTR reference: OMODA 5 Knight: £24,040 | JAECOO E5 Pure: £27,505 | Confirm matched cash quotations; the PCP grant is separate.

Energy routine: OMODA 5 Knight: petrol, no mains charging | JAECOO E5 Pure: battery-electric, needs mains charging | Choose a routine you can sustain.

Seats: OMODA 5 Knight: five | JAECOO E5 Pure: five | Test child seats and access; equal seat counts do not establish equal comfort.

Gearbox: OMODA 5 Knight: seven-speed DCT automatic | JAECOO E5 Pure: single-speed automatic | Test low-speed response; no joint road test here.

Range evidence: OMODA 5 Knight: no electric range claim | JAECOO E5 Pure: 248 miles WLTP | Laboratory reference, not guaranteed motorway distance.

These are starting points for a purchase decision, not a calculation of total ownership cost. A cash quote, finance example and laboratory reference answer different questions. Keep their conditions attached rather than treating the most attractive number in each advertisement as one combined offer.

Keep the cash references separate from the grant

OMODA's current UK offer identifies the petrol Knight as 147 PS, 1.6 turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Its published vehicle reference is £24,040 on the road. JAECOO's E5 Pure offer explicitly labels £27,505 as OTR Cash Price. Subtracting those references gives £3,465, an editorial difference before personalised paint, extras and any confirmed cash terms; it is not a payback target established by our testing.

The E5 example lists a £3,000 JAECOO EV Grant within its PCP deposit. That does not establish that every cash buyer can deduct it. We have not obtained unconditional cash-grant terms, and do not call the E5 a £24,505 cash car. The PCP examples use different interest rates and final payments: comparing their monthly amounts would not settle which is cheaper to own.

Both pages say eligible orders from 1 October 2026 until withdrawal, subject to availability, with retail and credit conditions. Obtain the actual cash total first; if financing, match deposit, term, mileage and intention to keep or return the car. Check the optional final payment, fees and total payable. No stock VIN, paint choice or delivery date has been confirmed. OMODA offer; JAECOO offer.

The E5 needs a charging plan, not a petrol-range contest

The current UK JAECOO technical table gives E5 Pure 248 miles WLTP, a 60.9 kWh battery label and up to 80 kW DC charging. The finance page rounds its model description to 61 kWh. We retain those source labels instead of inventing a usable-versus-total battery explanation. The technical table's 27-minute charging statement covers 30 to 80 per cent, not a larger 10 to 80 per cent window and not a full battery.

WLTP is a laboratory reference. Speed, weather, load, heating and the reserve you keep can change a journey, while a peak charging limit does not describe the whole session. Plan a regular long trip with a primary charging stop and an alternative. Check access, payment and parking restrictions, as well as the vehicle's battery preparation and the time spent leaving the main road.

The OMODA petrol Knight does not offer a comparable mains-powered electric distance. We have not sourced a matched real-world petrol consumption test or electricity-use test, so neither an invented tank range nor a brochure-based annual saving decides this comparison. Price the installation before deciding the electric premium is small

For the E5, start with where the car already spends time. A driveway, dependable workplace charger or suitable overnight location is more useful than a charger you would need to visit specially every week. Ask an installer about the available supply, protection, cable route and permissions, then obtain a written price for the work. Do not assume the vehicle's OTR reference includes installation or that every publicly advertised charger suits your routine.

The E5 technical table identifies CCS Type 2. Confirm the supplied cable and charging equipment on the order, and try the position of the port against your parking space. Without home charging, look at access hours and the tariff of the sites you would genuinely use. If these remain uncertain, the petrol Knight is our simpler starting point. It still requires buying fuel; convenience does not establish a lower lifetime bill. E5 connection and local specifications; OMODA petrol model.

Two five-seat SUVs still need different family tests

Both local manufacturers describe five-seat cars, but a seat count is not a packing test. Take your child seats, usual luggage and regular rear passengers. Check door opening, rear foot space, belt access and whether the driver can retain a comfortable position with a child seat behind. Try the controls and phone connection you will use daily, rather than choosing from the largest display in a promotional image.

Be precise about grade. Knight and Pure are the selected versions, so do not credit either with a feature demonstrated only on Noble or Luxury. The JAECOO range page contains petrol and electric columns; the OMODA page contains petrol, electric and hybrid variants. Ask the retailer to mark the equipment that belongs to the exact vehicle on your quote. We have not established an identical luggage-volume method for these two cars and do not award a boot winner from unrelated catalogue numbers. OMODA grade tables; JAECOO grade tables.

Insurance and servicing can change the purchase order

Get insurance quotes for the exact petrol Knight and E5 Pure using the same driver, address, mileage and level of cover. We have not verified matching insurance-group entries and will not borrow one from a hybrid or another trim. A group would not determine your premium in any case. Keep insurance, charging work and expected servicing in the budget before spending the apparent vehicle-price saving.

JAECOO's current technical table lists a seven-year or 100,000-mile vehicle warranty and separate eight-year or 100,000-mile battery cover. Those durations are advertised contract boundaries, not evidence of how long a battery will last or a promise that every repair is covered. Ask for exclusions and applicable servicing requirements, and request the current OMODA petrol contract on the same basis. Obtain written service estimates and identify the workshop you would actually use.

For a company-car decision, get the exact taxable/P11D specification and an employer calculation; a retail OTR or PCP deposit is not a personal tax bill. We have not calculated Benefit-in-Kind, repair delays, depreciation or a total-cost winner. JAECOO warranty table; current OMODA order reference.

China-side evidence

An overseas review must identify the right powertrain

No verified China-market owner cohort or complaint dataset has been used to rank these UK cars. We have not interviewed owners, measured long-term reliability or inferred resale values from an isolated online report. A review of an OMODA E5 electric car does not establish how the OMODA 5 petrol Knight behaves; a JAECOO 7 plug-in hybrid is another vehicle again.

If an overseas report raises a useful concern, turn it into a local question. Match generation, motor, battery, software and equipment before applying it to your order. During the test, check low-speed control, warning sounds, visibility and operation of the driver aids in a safe setting. The relevant starting points are the UK OMODA petrol table and UK JAECOO E5 table, followed by the exact unit and contract offered to you. A manufacturer's equipment list is evidence of declared fitment, not our measurement of assistance performance.

Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.

Turn the shortlist into two comparable offers

Before booking the tests, decide who will use the car and who pays for it. A private cash purchase, a PCP intended to end in ownership and a company-car arrangement require different comparisons. Keep the chosen route consistent across both vehicles. Do not justify an unaffordable purchase by combining an expected fuel saving, a conditional deposit benefit and a resale value that nobody has guaranteed.

Ask each retailer to provide the complete model and grade, colour, vehicle amount, included fees, optional accessories, any finance-dependent discount and expected delivery. If finance is relevant, request the total amount payable and the cost of retaining the vehicle at the end. A lower monthly figure can simply defer more of the bill.

Then make the practical checks with the same people and luggage: parking clearance, rear access, child seats, controls and visibility. For the E5, add a written installation estimate or a dependable alternative charging arrangement. Set aside enough time to understand the driver aids rather than trying to assess them in traffic. If either offer changes the version, repeat the equipment check. These steps turn the OMODA offer and E5 offer into a decision about the cars you can actually buy.

How to use this comparison

We read the current UK manufacturer offer pages and model tables on 18 October 2026 UTC. The model choices are OMODA 5 Knight petrol and JAECOO E5 Pure battery-electric. Prices retain their published OTR labels, while the E5 PCP grant remains separate because unconditional cash eligibility has not been established. The £3,465 difference is a subtraction of those references, not a guaranteed transaction saving.

This is documentary buying research, without a joint drive, charging test, workshop survey or personalised quotation. We do not equate laboratory range, peak charging power or advertised warranty duration with measured experience. Choose the petrol Knight when its simpler energy routine and final quote fit; choose the E5 only when reliable charging and the actual car make the switch worthwhile. Confirm equipment, total price and delivery in writing before committing.
