Omoda E5 EX vs Geely EX5 Complete NZ: convenience, family fit and the quote
Try the E5 EX first if its powered tailgate, sunroof and heated rear seats matter. Try EX5 Complete if its seating layout suits your family. Confirm the E5 battery conflict and both delivered quotes before ranking value or charging.
Start with the features your family will actually use
I would visit the E5 EX first if a powered tailgate, sunroof and heated rear seats are priorities. I would visit EX5 Complete if its cabin layout, rear-seat arrangements and driving position work better for the people using the car. The Geely's larger published body is a reason to try it with the family, not proof that it wins for usable space.
Both are battery-electric SUVs sold through New Zealand channels. Neither avoids the need for a workable charging routine. The E5 EX has the lower published vehicle reference, but two plus-ORC prices are not complete delivered quotes. There is also an unresolved E5 battery specification conflict. I would settle that identity before using a charging-time or battery-capacity comparison to justify either purchase.
EX and Complete are specific NZ grades
Omoda's current national page and Blackwells identify the E5 EX at NZ$44,990 plus on-road costs, above the BX. Geely lists EX5 Complete at NZ$49,990 plus ORC; its current-linked specification sheet says the MRP includes 15% GST and excludes on-road costs. Complete is separate from Inspire Extended Range, which has a different battery and equipment.
The E5 page lists front-wheel drive, 150 kW and 340 Nm. Geely's sheet identifies Complete as front-wheel drive with 160 kW and 320 Nm. These manufacturer figures are not a measured overtaking or towing comparison. Confirm the grade, build and model year on the actual proposals: a current web link does not establish the year of every car in stock.

| battery identification | Omoda E5 EXManufacturer says 58.9 kWh; current dealer says 61 kWh. The MY24 PDF also says 61 kWh; unresolved. | Geely EX5 CompleteComplete: 60 kWh LFP in the current-linked April 2026 sheet; not Inspire Extended Range 68 kWh. |
Do not put Inspire equipment into the Complete quote
The current E5 EX pages identify a powered tailgate, a power sunroof with shade, a 360-degree camera, six-way powered driver adjustment and four-way powered passenger adjustment. Blackwells explicitly identifies heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel on EX. These are concrete reasons to test this grade, rather than simply calling it better equipped.
EX5 Complete also has heated, electrically adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel and a 360-degree monitor in its current sheet. It has rear parking sensors, but the sheet marks front parking sensors, the panoramic sunroof and electric tailgate unavailable for Complete. Those features belong to Inspire. Complete's six-speaker audio also differs from the 16-speaker system shown elsewhere on the model page.
Try the actual tailgate opening under your garage roof and the seats with your normal driving position. If front sensors or a powered boot are essential, do not assume Complete includes them because a demonstration car or promotional photograph does. Ask for the correct grade and reconsider the price rather than silently upgrading its equipment.

58.9 and 61 kWh need an explanation tied to the E5 offered
Omoda's current range section gives the BX a 58.9 kWh battery, with EX features added to that base. Blackwells still gives the BX base 61 kWh before listing EX additions. The downloadable sheet is expressly Model Year 2024, Edition 1.0 November 2024, and also gives 61 kWh. Its old EX prices are not the current NZ$44,990 reference.
We have not closed whether the discrepancy reflects a different build, a capacity definition or another change. It would be speculation to label one gross and the other usable. Ask the seller to match battery specification, charging hardware and the relevant sheet to the unit quoted. The conflict does not prove that the car lacks a battery or cannot travel; it limits a precise comparison until identity is clear.
Geely's April 2026 sheet gives Complete 60 kWh and Inspire Extended Range 68 kWh. Do not replace the Complete figure with another market's more precise capacity or the larger Inspire battery. Nor do the two 430 km laboratory references establish identical consumption, highway distance or winter reserve. We have not driven both over the same route.
Twenty and twenty-eight minutes are manufacturer conditions
Geely specifies Type 2 CCS for AC and DC, up to 11 kW AC and 100 kW DC. Its twenty-minute claim is for 30% to 80%, with the site explaining that test conditions, temperature and charger performance affect the result. The peak is not a promise of constant power throughout the session.
Omoda's current model page advertises twenty-eight minutes from 30% to 80%. The older MY24 sheet gives AC and DC hardware values, but the current 58.9-versus-61 kWh conflict prevents us automatically assigning that older hardware to every EX now offered. We therefore do not declare an eight-minute charging win, or fill the current EX specification from an overseas model.
Have the dealer confirm each unit's inlet, AC/DC limits, supplied equipment and charging conditions. At home, check installation, available electrical capacity and permissions; on a family trip, check access, compatibility, opening hours and an alternative charger. Neither published session time includes a queue or guarantees that your stop takes exactly that long.
Keep the necessary seats occupied when you test luggage
Omoda's current dimensions are 4,424 mm long and 1,830 mm wide; Geely's sheet gives 4,615 mm and 1,901 mm. These body figures help plan a visit, but do not establish mirror clearance, door opening or turning performance. Try the entrance and parking bay with the actual car, especially if the garage is already tight.
The Complete sheet identifies reclining rear backrests, a 60:40 split and child-restraint anchor arrangements. Adjust the front seats first, install your own child seats, check buckle access and have rear passengers sit in their travelling positions. A longer body or wheelbase is not proof that a particular restraint or passenger fits better.
For Geely luggage, the sheet distinguishes 302 litres with rear seats up, 410 litres expanded and 1,877 with seats folded. The old MY24 E5 sheet gives another volume, but we have not closed a common method and current-unit correspondence. Do not compare a folded or expanded configuration with an occupied five-seat layout. Load the buggy and normal bags, check access to lower storage and see what the puncture or spare-wheel equipment occupies. No common loading test was performed for this guide.
Coverage headlines do not measure ownership quality
Both brands describe seven-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle cover and eight-year battery cover in their NZ ownership material, with conditions. Omoda's short banner also uses an eight-year warranty heading, while its detailed vehicle and battery benefits distinguish the two. Obtain the certificates applicable to the unit and intended use rather than treating every headline as the vehicle term.
Geely's roadside support starts with three years and can extend through scheduled servicing, up to its stated maximum. Omoda's dealer similarly distinguishes initial roadside cover from extensions through servicing. Neither is an unconditional promise that every owner gets the maximum without meeting the programme terms.
The sources list airbags and assistance systems, but we have not independently matched both proposed NZ units to the applicable crash assessments. No safety-star ranking follows here. Test the controls and alerts with supervision. The Geely sheet retains historical OTA timing labels for phone mirroring; pair your own phone and verify the installed software rather than assuming a past scheduled date proves the feature is present. We have no measured parts-delay, reliability or resale comparison.
Five thousand dollars is a reference difference, not the delivered gap
The published NZ$44,990 and NZ$49,990 references help set the shortlist. On-road costs, GST treatment, paint, accessories and delivery must be consistent before calculating the actual cash difference. Geely's sheet lists Arctic White as standard and NZ$950 for several other colours. Ask Omoda for the matching paint and roof configuration rather than applying the cheapest reference to any colour.
Geely's 1.88% finance illustration uses a 36-month term, 20% deposit and an assumed NZ$1,500 ORC, plus establishment, registration-of-security and dealer fees and a weekly maintenance fee. Its repayments and total are a financed example, not a universal cash ORC or a vehicle driveaway quote. Request a separate cash offer and the full credit schedule; a weekly amount is not the acquisition cost.
For ongoing costs, use your own distance, actual consumption, electricity prices, charging losses and public-charging mix, along with applicable road-user charges, insurance and maintenance. We have not closed those household inputs. A lower vehicle reference does not establish a monthly saving or a payback period.
The useful choice after the two demonstrations
Continue with E5 EX if its convenience features solve everyday tasks, the family fits and its delivered proposal works, after the battery and charging specification is explained. Continue with EX5 Complete if its seat layout, controls and loading arrangement work better for you, and the extra delivered cost is justified by those demonstrated benefits.
If you require an electric tailgate or panoramic roof on the Geely, compare the appropriate Inspire proposal afresh. If the E5 seller cannot identify the specification on a decisive point, keep that uncertainty in the decision. Neither the similar range labels nor the badge should decide a purchase that fails your parking, charging or family task.
Sources and limits
Documentary sources checked on 19 October 2026 (UTC): current NZ manufacturer and Blackwells E5 pages, the explicitly dated MY24 Omoda sheet, and Geely's current page and April 2026 specification sheet. We preserved the battery discrepancy and the dates of older documents. Current sales and enquiry routes do not prove a particular unit is allocated or available immediately.
The NZ 66 Magazine article places these models in a local shortlist, but its May 2025 driving event was in Australia. We did not adopt its launch prices, service offer or opinions about space, efficiency and ride as current NZ facts or our own tests. This guide includes no joint driving, charging, loading or ownership study; the final proposals and practical demonstrations remain decisive.
Questions NZ buyers ask
- Is the current E5 EX battery 58.9 or 61 kWh?
- The national base specification says 58.9 kWh, while the current dealer base and the dated MY24 sheet say 61 kWh. We have not resolved that as a gross/usable distinction or a build change. Ask for the specification matched to the EX quoted.
- Does EX5 Complete include the electric tailgate and panoramic roof?
- No, those are marked unavailable for Complete in the current-linked NZ sheet and offered on Inspire. Complete does have heated powered front seats and a 360-degree monitor. Confirm the actual grade demonstrated.
- Does the twenty-minute Geely claim prove it charges eight minutes faster?
- No matched test establishes that. Both quoted windows are 30–80%, but the E5 hardware identity is unresolved and charger, temperature and battery conditions matter. We do not turn the manufacturer claims into a guaranteed stop-time difference.
- Is the delivered price difference exactly NZ$5,000?
- Not established. The current references are NZ$44,990 + ORC and NZ$49,990 + ORC. Ask for matching cash proposals including tax treatment, paint, on-road costs, accessories and delivery before calculating the actual gap.
