Our take
The MG4 EV Urban is the front-drive hatch MG sells under the MG4 name, not the rear-drive MG4 EV it is often confused with. MG is owned by China's state-backed SAIC Motor. It suits buyers who want a practical, roomy EV for town and the commute. The Urban Essence 54 is listed at $38,990 plus on-road costs and quotes 405 km WLTP, which covers most weekly driving. The trade-off is DC fast charging: the peak of 87 kW is modest, so longer trips mean slower stops. The car and its battery are both covered by a long warranty with no kilometre limit, which reassures private owners.
