BYD Seal U DM-i vs MG HS Plug-in Hybrid: which is the better UK buy?
MG HS Plug-in Hybrid SE is our value-first starting point when you can charge regularly. BYD Comfort earns its extra spend when its actual family fit and quoted specification suit you better.
The verdict
Start with MG HS Plug-in Hybrid SE for a value-first shortlist when you can charge regularly. Its current displayed starting OTR price is lower, with a similar published electric-range reference. Choose BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort when its seats, controls, equipment or your actual quote earn the extra spend. Neither needs to win by two brochure miles.

Compare today’s versions and price bases before reading the monthly payment
This comparison selects the UK BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort and MG HS Plug-in Hybrid SE. The BYD Boost and all-wheel-drive Design have different batteries or drivetrains; MG HS petrol and Hybrid+ are separate powertrains. A cheap HS headline is not automatically the plug-in hybrid discussed here.
On18October2026, the current Toomey range page displayed MG HS Plug-in Hybrid SE from £33,495 on the road. MG’s indexed UK configurator and brochure menu showed the same starting amount. The dealer page also retained a different Trophy finance example. We use the labelled SE range price, rather than treating every finance box on the page as an interchangeable cash offer. Ask which model year and exact specification the dealer will supply.
The identified Lookers BYD Comfort offer displayed a cash price of £34,991.02, against an RRP of £36,995, with terms for 7 October to 31 December 2026. A PCP deposit contribution is separate from the cash price and must not be deducted again. These displayed references put the MG about £1,500 below the BYD before any personalised discount or quote difference.
That comparison is a dealer cash offer against a displayed starting OTR reference, not two guaranteed matched transaction prices. Get written totals covering paint, delivery, registration, accessories and your chosen payment route. MG’s old indexed £32,495 finance table and test-drive voucher carry registration terms ending 30 September 2026; we have not treated that expired incentive as a current saving. The old £35,205 BYD media overview is also not used as a current price.
Seventy-five versus seventy-seven miles is not a useful deciding margin
BYD’s UK model material quotes up to 77 miles of electric range for Comfort. MG’s current UK model text specifies up to 75 miles WLTP combined, with a 24.7 kWh battery. Those references put both in a similar electric-commute category. They do not establish that either will cover the entire quoted distance on a cold, fast or heavily loaded journey.
For a daily route comfortably inside both published ranges, concentrate on whether you can recharge where you park. A reliable overnight or workplace routine matters more than the two-mile advertised difference. If the commute approaches the limit, leave a reserve and investigate relevant independent cold-weather or motorway evidence for the exact delivery versions. We have not measured a common-route electric-range result here.
Both cars retain a petrol engine for journeys beyond their charged electric operation. That flexibility does not make charging irrelevant. Once your routine leaves little opportunity to plug in, a long electric-range headline says less about what you will actually spend on fuel. Compare their charge-depleted operation with other hybrids before committing to either PHEV.
The Vehicle Certification Agency explains why plug-in-hybrid fuel figures require careful reading. A weighted WLTP mpg result combines electric and fuel operation under a defined procedure. It is not the petrol economy you can assume after the charge has been used. We therefore do not announce a running-cost winner by comparing two very large weighted mpg numbers.

Build the fuel and electricity budget from your routine
Use a deliberately simple illustration before asking for a model-specific estimate. Suppose an electric 100 miles takes 30 kWh from the wall, including charging losses. At 8p/kWh that costs £2.40; at 30p it costs £9; at 75p it costs £22.50. These are arithmetic scenarios with chosen inputs, not efficiency measurements, current tariff recommendations or official figures for either car.
The purpose is to show why access to inexpensive charging can outweigh a small difference between brochure ranges. Replace the assumed energy and prices with your own tariff and a relevant test for each car. A public charger’s convenience and tariff can make a very different proposition from an overnight home supply. Do not assume every mile in a real PHEV journey will be electric simply because the initial battery was charged.
For a household budget, separate electric miles, petrol miles, standing costs, insurance, servicing and the cost of installing charging. The lower advertised purchase price is meaningful only alongside the actual finance terms or cash total you will pay. A smaller monthly payment can conceal a larger deposit, balloon or mileage restriction.
We have not established complete current matched UK insurance-group and P11D data for these exact delivery versions. Obtain an insurance quote and, for a company car, ask payroll or the fleet provider to use the correct model, certified figures and tax year. An old press-release tax percentage is not a current personal tax calculation.
Make the boot and seating comparison with your own equipment
BYD’s UK material lists the Seal U at 4,775 mm long and quotes up to 425 litres of luggage space with the rear seats upright. That gives a useful catalogue reference, but a large exterior does not by itself guarantee that the family’s awkward items fit more easily.
We did not verify a matching current MG SE boot specification from a readable UK primary document during this check. Some live dealer technical fields mixed older body dimensions with a newer price, while the manufacturer’s June 2026 range PDF could not be retrieved. We have left those unverified MG figures out rather than assigning an older car’s capacity to the quoted delivery model.
At the appointment, keep the front seats in the positions your household actually needs and fit the child seats before loading the pram or luggage. Check the boot opening, underfloor area and whether the parcel shelf can remain in place. Then try the rear centre position and inspect access around the child seat. Those checks can justify buying the BYD even when the MG’s displayed starting amount is lower.
Ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact car’s climate controls, parking views and phone connection. Equipment varies by trim and model year. A video of an HS Trophy is not proof that every feature appears on the SE quote; nor does a BYD Design demonstration establish the Comfort’s drivetrain or performance.
MG has the longer stated time cover; BYD the higher basic distance cap
MG’s UK dealer summary gives a seven-year/80,000-mile vehicle warranty, whichever comes first. BYD’s January 2026 UK update gives six years/150,000 km for the basic vehicle warranty. The BYD kilometre cap is about 93,200 miles by conversion, so neither policy wins every use pattern: MG has the longer stated duration and BYD the higher stated distance ceiling.
Those headline limits are not interchangeable with battery terms, roadside assistance or a guarantee that every component is covered throughout. BYD’s current update separately states eight years/250,000 km for the Blade Battery, with at least 70% state of health under its policy. We do not infer an identical MG battery capacity remedy from its seven-year vehicle headline.
Before deciding, obtain the warranty booklet, model-specific service schedule and written confirmation of the warranty start date. Discuss annual mileage honestly and check the local authorised service arrangement. For a buyer keeping either car beyond the normal finance term, those practical terms and access to repairs matter more than simply counting the years in an advert.
China-side evidence
Do not transfer owner evidence across HS powertrains or BYD trims
This article’s MG is the UK plug-in hybrid with the manufacturer’s 24.7 kWh battery reference. A Chinese-market discussion of an HS-related vehicle, a petrol HS or the much smaller-battery HS Hybrid+ is not automatically evidence about this UK specification. The same discipline applies to Seal U material: Comfort, Boost and all-wheel-drive Design must stay attached to the correct battery and drivetrain.
We have not used an independently verified, matching Chinese owner cohort to claim a UK reliability rate or a model-wide fault pattern. Any future owner report would need its market, model year, powertrain, battery, software and use case checked first. The buying conclusion here rests on the stated UK price bases and daily charging routine. It does not claim that a badge, a sales total or an isolated overseas complaint establishes reliability.
Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.
The buying decision and the limits of this comparison
This is a desk-based UK comparison checked on 18 October 2026. It uses BYD UK material and the identified current dealer offer, MG’s indexed manufacturer text and configurator, and directly read UK dealer pages. Some MG manufacturer pages and itsJune 2026 PDF returned access errors; we do not claim to have downloaded or visually inspected that brochure. Current price references are separated from expired finance and voucher terms.
Start with a current MG SE quote if you can charge reliably and want to minimise the upfront spend. Keep BYD Comfort on the shortlist when the test appointment reveals a real advantage in fit, controls or the exact equipment you want. Choose by two matched written totals and your own loading and charging routine. We have not conducted a road test, common packing exercise or comparative reliability study, and no hypothetical cost calculation is presented as a manufacturer result.
