Leapmotor T03 vs BYD Dolphin Surf Boost: low price or more range?

Start with T03 for a short city commute and tight parking. Surf Boost adds a larger reported boot and more range, with current UK price conditions kept clear.

The verdict

Start with the T03 when keeping purchase cost and parked length down matters most. The Surf Boost earns a place for its larger reported boot, 200-mile WLTP combined rating and stronger declared DC charging. Its extra outlay is harder to justify for a short commute with dependable home charging.

The exact UK cars, checked on 22 October 2026

This comparison selects the UK T03 with the 37.3 kWh battery, identified as MY27 in Leapmotor's currently linked retailer specification sheet, and the UK Dolphin Surf Boost with the 43.2 kWh battery. Both are battery electric cars. The Surf Active has a smaller battery; the Comfort has a more powerful motor. Neither substitutes for the Boost in this decision. In particular, the Comfort's 9.1-second acceleration figure is not the Boost's.

The cars remain represented by current local model and ordering material: Leapmotor publishes a detailed retail offer for orders from 1 October to 31 December 2026, while BYD's UK configurator currently offers a selected Boost 43.2 kWh/200-mile configuration and the exact Lookers listing describes a brand-new Boost to order. That establishes a current order route, rather than a particular car waiting for collection. Ask for the model year and battery on the supplied order, especially if a retailer offers older stock. The UK model page still links the specification used below, but its current Boost comparison still identifies four seats. BYD's separate European five-seat update should not be substituted for that UK specification. These are buying references checked on 22 October, not reserved vehicles or guaranteed delivery dates.

Read the T03 saving once, and keep cash separate from PCP

Leapmotor's detailed current example gives a £16,295 OTR vehicle price and a £2,500 LEAP-GRANT manufacturer saving, producing £13,795 OTR for the Caribbean Blue T03. Its current MY27 specification table repeats those three numbers and identifies that colour as free. The manufacturer saving is restricted to qualifying UK resident private retail customers; fleet, business and Motability sales are excluded. Do not subtract it a second time from the £13,795 figure. The offer's OTR definition includes VAT, delivery to the retailer, number plates, first registration and 12 months' Vehicle Excise Duty; insurance and charging are separate.

There is a material document inconsistency: the same linked specification sheet still carries a £3,000 grant footnote ending on 30 September 2026. That expired wording does not establish an extra current discount. Our purchase reference follows the present detailed quarterly offer and the current table, with written confirmation needed from the retailer.

BYD's current UK configurator displays £21,975 for the selected Boost 43.2 kWh version. The full OTR scope of that configuration price has not been verified, so it is a manufacturer price reference rather than a completed personal offer. Separately, the exact Lookers Boost listing displays £21,975 RRP and a £20,534.36 advertised vehicle price. The price is displayed separately from the £259 monthly PCP alternative, rather than identified as a finance total. However, we have not verified an explicit cash/OTR basis or its full current terms, so treat it as a dealer advertisement awaiting a complete quote. It is not BYD's guaranteed nationwide transaction price. Comparing the T03's £208.98 PCP instalment with the Surf's £259 instalment would also miss deposits, interest, mileage and final payments. Use two completed cash quotations, or compare the full payable amount and identical usage assumptions for finance.

The Boost buys a modest range margin, not a different class of car

The current UK T03 material declares up to 171 miles WLTP combined. BYD's UK technical table gives the Boost 200 miles WLTP combined, alongside 43.2 kWh. The difference is 29 declared miles. The Boost's much larger 305-mile city-cycle figure answers a different test question and should not be set against the T03's combined figure. The battery capacities are manufacturer labels, not a measured comparison of usable energy.

For a short return commute, that extra rated range may matter less than whether you can plug in reliably while the car is parked. A household travelling an illustrative 40 miles a day could investigate both cars rather than paying for the larger battery automatically. That is a shopping scenario, not a promise about either car's winter range or how many days it will run between charges. Motorway speed, cold weather, heating, load and battery condition can alter the result.

The Boost also declares 12.1 seconds from 0 to 62 mph against the T03's 12.7. Those figures give little reason to buy the BYD as a dramatic performance step. Spend the test drive on joining your actual roads, visibility and control use, rather than assuming that its larger battery means a much quicker car.

A shorter body versus a larger published boot

The T03 is 3.62 metres long; the Surf is 3.99 metres. That 37 cm body-length difference is a concrete reason to try the T03 first if a short driveway, shared parking bay or the space behind a garage door limits the car you can buy. It does not prove an easier turning circle, better visibility or less effort at every manoeuvre. Park each demonstrator in the troublesome space and check that the doors and tailgate can open.

Leapmotor reports 240 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and BYD reports 308 litres for the Surf. The larger BYD number makes it the more promising first appointment for a bulky pushchair or regular shopping load. We have not established a common measurement method, so it is not evidence that a particular item fits or that every extra reported litre is useful. Take the same bags, mobility equipment or pushchair to both cars with the seats positioned for the passengers who will actually travel.

BYD's current UK Boost comparison table and the UK specification sheet still linked on 22 October both identify four seats. Separately, BYD announced five-seat versions for its European 2026-model-year update on 28 September, saying four- and five-seat versions would coexist according to local markets. The European announcement does not establish that a five-seat Boost is the car supplied by a UK retailer. Confirm the registered seat count and child-seat installation on the actual order before paying, especially if you need a fifth place.

Compare the same charging window and the charger you can use

The T03 currently declares up to 45 kW DC charging and a 36-minute 30 to 80% session. The Surf Boost declares up to 85 kW DC, 30 minutes from 10 to 80%, and 22 minutes from 30 to 80%. Comparing 36 minutes with 22 minutes uses the same stated battery window. Comparing the T03's 36 minutes with the BYD's 30 minutes would quietly change the starting charge and hide part of what the larger car offers.

Those are manufacturer claims under their own conditions, not a back-to-back charging test. BYD's footnote specifies a suitable CCS2 DC charger above 100 kW and above 500 V, with a suitable 25°C ambient temperature, to achieve its maximum charging speed. Leapmotor also conditions its figures on the charger, cable, battery and temperature. An 85 kW peak is not 85 kW throughout the session, and a more powerful public charger cannot force a car to accept more than it allows.

The Boost's 11 kW AC maximum is another qualified figure: BYD's five-hour 0 to 100% example assumes an 11 kW three-phase supply. It does not make a single-phase home installation deliver 11 kW. For a home-charging city car, obtain the installation assessment and the T03's actual AC capability before attaching a money value to that specification. Confirm the supplied build against these currently published UK references. For frequent public charging, investigate the Surf first, then check the actual stations on your route and a backup stop.

Spend the price difference on things that change the routine

The T03's lower purchase reference does not mean a bare cabin. Its current UK sheet lists a panoramic glass sunroof with a powered blind, a 10.1-inch central screen, adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera with rear parking sensors. Those are useful reasons to sit in the actual car before assuming that a more expensive rival supplies every feature you need. They are equipment descriptions, not proof of comfortable seats, effortless screen controls or superior driver assistance.

Try the parking view in poor light, adjust the driving position and operate the demister and navigation before committing. A useful daily control can matter more than a screen dimension. Ask the retailer to demonstrate your own phone rather than treating Bluetooth, built-in navigation and smartphone mirroring as interchangeable features. BYD's current UK model page expressly lists Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; equivalent integration on the supplied T03 remains unverified here.

The Leapmotor sheet describes four years of vehicle cover as three years plus one additional year, and eight years of battery cover, subject to terms. Do not turn headline years into a guaranteed repair, free servicing or a resale value. Obtain both cars' full applicable warranty and service requirements, an insurance quotation for the exact supplied version, and a workable local workshop arrangement. These costs remain outside the advertised purchase references above.

China-side evidence

Keep overseas ownership claims separate from these UK versions

A Chinese-market price, owner score or charging video does not establish the ownership result for either selected UK car. Our buying evidence is the UK MY27 T03 material and the UK Boost specification; it does not provide a matched long-term reliability study or a forecast of three-year resale values. An apparently identical name in an overseas review is not enough to transfer battery, software, charging or equipment claims to a retailer's UK order.

That leaves a practical choice for a household depending on one vehicle: weigh the published purchase commitment against support you can actually reach. Ask how diagnosis, parts and replacement transport are arranged, and whether an alternative workshop can handle the supplied car. The presence of assistance features does not establish a crash-test winner, remove the driver's responsibility or demonstrate that warning behaviour will suit you. Test the warnings and controls during the UK demonstration rather than buying an assumed overseas experience.

Where included, owner reports and complaints are individual accounts, not representative surveys; recalls apply only to the vehicles and markets stated in each notice. Check the source, market and date of each claim.

Which one earns a place in your household?

For a second car doing short urban trips with dependable overnight charging, start with the T03. Its smaller body and lower published purchase reference solve two direct constraints. If it carries the actual passengers and luggage, a more expensive battery does not automatically improve the week. Keep enough budget for the home-charging work, insurance and the unexpected costs that neither advertised vehicle price covers.

For one small car carrying larger bags and taking regular trips beyond the immediate area, start the demonstration schedule with the Surf Boost. The larger reported boot, extra WLTP combined range and shorter declared DC session are relevant benefits. Decide whether you use those benefits often enough to accept the completed purchase commitment. A rare holiday may justify a different travel arrangement rather than spending more on every school run; that is a household budget choice, not an assumed rental saving.

For a buyer without dependable home or workplace charging, first map an ordinary week's charging appointments and a backup for each. Neither the official range difference nor a quoted peak rate establishes that a particular public charger will be working and free. If the regular return journey is an illustrative 130 miles, do not base a winter plan on consuming nearly all of either combined-test figure. Check the actual route, weather margin and possible stop before selecting the car.

How to use the figures and finish the purchase

This is a document-based UK comparison checked on 22 October 2026, using current manufacturer model material, the currently linked specifications and the exact dealer Boost advertisement. The linked Surf sheet's filename dates to September 2025, so the selected Boost and its comparison table were also checked in the current UK configurator. They confirm the 43.2 kWh/200-mile reference and four seats; the actual supplied build must still match the order. We have not conducted a road test, measured either battery, compared a winter route or timed a charging session. WLTP combined is kept separate from WLTP city; the charging comparison uses the same 30 to 80% window. Published boot figures remain attributed because a common measuring method has not been established.

Before ordering, put the exact model year, battery, colour, final OTR total, saving eligibility and realistic delivery position on the same written offer. For finance, include the deposit, every instalment, final payment, interest, mileage and return conditions. Set those beside an actual insurance quote and any charging-installation work. That produces a purchase decision for your household. The T03's conflicting expired grant footnote, need to confirm the supplied Surf build and the unconfirmed Boost cash/OTR terms are reasons to settle the written terms before paying, rather than reasons to invent a precise saving.

Questions about the T03 and Surf Boost

Which has the lower advertised purchase reference?
The current T03 example is £13,795 OTR after a qualifying £2,500 saving. BYD's selected Boost configuration displays £21,975; full OTR scope is unconfirmed. Lookers separately advertises £20,534.36 with cash basis and complete terms unconfirmed. Compare written offers before calculating your saving.
Does the UK Surf Boost have 200 or 305 miles of range?
BYD lists 200 miles WLTP combined and 305 miles WLTP city for the Boost. Compare the 200-mile combined figure with the T03's current 171-mile WLTP combined figure. Neither is a guarantee of real motorway or winter range.
Is the Surf Boost the quicker car to charge?
Its declared DC 30 to 80% session is 22 minutes, compared with the T03's 36 minutes. The respective peak figures are 85 kW and 45 kW. Conditions differ and these are manufacturer claims, so a particular charging stop may not reproduce them.
Which is the shorter car, and which has the bigger reported boot?
The T03 is 3,620 mm long, against 3,990 mm for the Surf. Published seats-up boot figures are 240 and 308 litres respectively. The common measurement method and actual luggage fit are unconfirmed, so try the same load in both.
Can I subtract another £3,000 from the T03 offer?
No additional saving is established. The detailed current offer and MY27 price table show £16,295 less £2,500, giving £13,795 OTR. The same specification sheet retains a conflicting £3,000 footnote ending on 30 September 2026. Confirm the current written retailer terms and do not deduct the saving twice.
