JAECOO 7 SHS-P Luxury vs MG HS PHEV SE: is the UK premium useful?
The MG SE starts lower on checked UK advertised OTR references and offers a longer official electric range. JAECOO’s documented DC option is a conditional reason to spend more.
The verdict
MG SE is the initial value choice for reliable overnight charging. JAECOO Luxury is conditional on useful DC access or a better household fit.

What would make the premium worthwhile?
The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid SE is the stronger starting point for a family that can charge overnight and wants the lowest checked advertised entry price. JAECOO 7 SHS-P Luxury is the more interesting alternative when opportunistic DC charging would genuinely help your week, or its cabin passes a family test that the MG fails. That is a conditional buying recommendation, not a claim that we have driven these cars or measured their fuel bills.
Do not compare the JAECOO's cheapest model-page headline with the selected MG. The relevant JAECOO is the front-wheel-drive plug-in Luxury; the lower-priced SHS-H Pure is a different, non-plug-in hybrid. Equally, MG's HS Hybrid+ is not the plug-in SE considered here. The model badges look similar while the way you charge and use the cars differs substantially.
Two UK orderable PHEVs, with different advertised price references
The prices were re-read from UK sources for this 19 October local-date article. JAECOO's manufacturer offer names Luxury and gives an OTR cash price of £35,170. It also presents a PCP example, but the cash figure is our purchase reference. The offer covers eligible retail orders from 1 October 2026 until withdrawn, subject to availability. A low monthly payment does not remove the final payment or establish that finance will be approved.
Toomey MG's current range section lists the HS Plug-in Hybrid SE from £33,495 on the road. Its separately promoted Trophy finance example is a different trim and transaction. We do not borrow that deposit contribution, discounted finance price or monthly payment for an SE cash comparison. These are two advertised starting references, rather than binding quotes for identically optioned cars delivered to your address.
Subtracting those references gives £1,675. That amount is useful as the extra purchase hurdle the JAECOO must justify, not a guaranteed invoice difference. Paint, accessories, trade-in treatment, order timing and a retailer discount can change it. Request the named trim, full delivered cash total, deposit refund conditions and an expected delivery date in writing before treating either as the cheaper available car. No retailer has confirmed a particular allocation for this article.

A longer electric routine versus a different way to replenish it
MG's official UK model page gives up to 75 miles of electric-only WLTP combined range from a 24.7 kWh battery. JAECOO's current UK SHS-P table gives 56 miles WLTP and a battery entry of 18.3 to 18.4 kWh. Its descriptive copy rounds the capacity to 18.3 kWh. We retain that small source presentation difference; it does not create two independently verified battery variants or a usable-capacity comparison.
The published range references differ by 19 miles. They are laboratory comparison figures, not promises for a cold motorway trip with children, luggage and cabin heat. Nevertheless, their practical implication is clear: if an ordinary return journey stretches beyond the JAECOO's comfortable electric envelope, the MG is the first car to investigate for covering more of it without petrol. If your routine fits comfortably within both, paying for theoretical spare range may matter less than parking, comfort and the actual quote.
JAECOO documents 40 kW DC capability and a 20-minute 30-to-80-per-cent session. It also lists 6.6 kW AC charging, with 25 to 100 per cent taking160 minutes. Those are different energy windows. Neither is a complete empty-to-full time, a guarantee of your public-charger stop, or evidence that the car accepts its peak continuously. We did not obtain a clean current MG SE primary specification for an equivalent DC session, so we do not assert that it has no DC socket or award a measured charging-speed victory.
For a driver with reliable overnight charging, returning home and plugging in is more useful than designing the week around rapid charging a PHEV. For someone who regularly pauses at a compatible charger anyway, the JAECOO's documented DC option may have value. Check the socket and exact supplied vehicle specification with the retailer. Do not buy it on the assumption that a motorway charging stop will necessarily cost less than continuing on petrol.

Price the electricity you will actually use
A PHEV only delivers the electric part of its appeal when it is plugged in often enough. A household with a driveway, a suitable installation and a tariff that suits its timetable has a different proposition from an apartment resident relying on paid public charging. Ask an installer for the cost of the actual electrical work; a car's advertised charging power does not establish that your property can provide it.
Here is a deliberately illustrative calculation, not consumption measured in either car. Assume 30 kWh bought at the meter for 100 electric miles, including charging losses. At8 p/kWh that is£2.40; at 30 p it is£9; at 75 p it is£22.50. The assumption is held constant to show how strongly tariff choice affects the answer. It does not demonstrate equal efficiency or predict your winter range. Replace it with your own observed meter use once you own the car, or with a clearly attributed independent test when one covers the exact specification.
The £1,675 advertised purchase-reference gap therefore has no honest universal fuel-saving payback. MG already starts lower on the references used here; JAECOO's case needs a practical benefit rather than an invented saving against the cheaper car. Conversely, choosing the MG solely to save that gap would be false economy if the household cannot comfortably use its cabin or if the actual final quote changes. Compare annual insurance, scheduled servicing and financing totals for the same driver, mileage and ownership period. A representative APR is not your approval or total household cost.
The family test is more useful than a litre contest
Take your child seats, pram and typical weekly luggage to both showrooms. Adjust the front seat for the taller driver first, then check rear access, the space needed to buckle a child and whether the door can open in your usual parking bay. A brochure's seat count cannot tell you whether three particular occupants fit comfortably. Keep charging leads in the luggage assessment so an apparently usable boot does not depend on leaving essential equipment at home.
On the test drive, include low-speed parking, a familiar rough surface and the junctions you use daily. Try the demisting controls and the route to the settings you will change often. Assess assistance warnings without assuming a list of assistance features proves better calibration. None of these observations has been performed by CathayEV for this comparison, so no ride, refinement or touchscreen winner is asserted.
Also confirm the selected SE's standard equipment. MG's current model page marks several attractive cabin items as Trophy-only. A picture of that trim does not upgrade the cheaper SE. Ask the JAECOO retailer the same question against the Luxury order sheet, rather than a petrol Luxury, Black Luxury or overseas specification. If the feature that wins the comparison costs extra, put its price into the delivered totals.
China-side evidence
Keep current UK specifications separate from mixed technical feeds
The most material source problem here is version mixing. Toomey's commercial range table identifies a current SE price, while its automated engineering block includes older-looking dimensions. That block is not used to establish the current car's size, charging hardware or battery. MG's accessible official model text is the source for the battery and WLTP reference. Direct access to that site failed in this refresh; the indexed official text was readable, with its own crawl date retained in our research receipt.
JAECOO's site places petrol, SHS-P and SHS-H columns together. We matched the plug-in Luxury column instead of treating the lowest headline, a different power output or a self-charging battery as interchangeable. This matters more than a generic China-market reputation claim. We verified no matched Chinese owner cohort, complaint denominator or winter charging trial for these exact UK specifications. Overseas owner posts cannot establish UK reliability rates. They also cannot resolve a disputed dealer field. For a particular car, seek the UK order specification and applicable recall or service-campaign status through the proper local channel, without assuming a campaign exists.

How this UK buying conclusion was reached
This is a desk comparison of named UK vehicles and current commercial references, prepared on 19 October 2026 local date. Fresh source retrieval occurred on 18 October UTC; that is not a new publication date for the underlying documents. Older figures, conditions and indexed crawl dates are preserved separately in the research records. We have not driven either vehicle, requested finance, secured stock or measured charging, fuel use or luggage space.
The shortlist addresses a real local search signal and a UK comparative buying result, rather than an invented monthly-volume claim. The final decision remains simple: start with the lower-priced MG SE when home charging and the cabin work for you; investigate the JAECOO's premium when its documented replenishment option or your physical family assessment supplies a specific reason. If neither has a convenient charging routine, reassess whether a plug-in car is the right powertrain before choosing between these two.
