MG IM6 Long Range vs EV6 Air 84: which improves your long trip?

Quote Air first if its route, seats and charging routine already work. Choose IM6 Long Range when its supplied cabin equipment or four-wheel steering makes a useful difference.

The verdict

Choose Air first when its actual range, charging routine and manual seat adjustment meet the task at a satisfactory quote. Put IM6 Long Range first when its cabin, powered and ventilated seats or four-wheel steering materially improve your regular journeys.

Buy the MG IM6 if

You will use the selected Long Range equipment and have tested the controls and physical fit, with an acceptable delivered quote.

Buy the Kia EV6 if

Air meets the route and seating task without the richer IM6 equipment, and its completed purchase proposal suits the budget.

Quote Air first; make the IM6 equipment earn its place

Start with EV6 Air 84 if it completes your regular long trip with sensible charging reserve, its manual seat adjustment suits both drivers and its finished quotation meets your budget. Put IM6 100 Long Range first when its powered, ventilated front seats, heated rear outer seats or four-wheel steering solve something you do often enough to value. The MG's richer specification can be a reason to buy; a claimed 17-minute stop against Kia's 18-minute stop is a poor reason on its own.

Both are rear-drive electric cars with active UK sales routes. This is a comparison of the actual Long Range and Air specifications, not an IM6 Performance road test or an EV6 GT-Line S equipment list. CathayEV has not driven or charged these two cars together. A seat that feels wrong, a control you cannot use comfortably or a parking space that does not work is more important than a feature advantage you rarely use.

Long Range 100 and Air 84 are the precise UK selections

MG's current UK website links the IM6 brochure with a June 2026 filename. Its Long Range column gives 100 kWh nominal and 96.5 kWh usable NCM capacity, 300 kW rear-wheel drive and 20-inch wheels. Launch Edition's adaptive air suspension is not standard Long Range equipment. The document's final terms still carry an older publication statement, so have the current supplied specification and build confirmed on the order rather than inferring model year from a download date.

Kia's current UK Air pricing and technical tables identify the 84.0 kWh, 225 bhp rear-drive automatic on 19-inch wheels. Its published battery capacity is not presented here as a verified usable figure. AWD, GT-Line and GT-Line S have separate equipment and range entries; optional premium paint or a heat-pump pack must not quietly appear in an Air comparison.

Keep the configured retail amount separate from Kia OTR

The selected MG configurator reference is £48,495 including VAT, with Arctic White included. That establishes the retail configuration amount, not an itemised delivered quote for this household. Kia's current exact Air 84 row lists £45,635 OTR with standard paint. Its guide separately shows premium paint at £700. The row's tax and registration breakdown is not a promise that delivery-day charges or a retailer's personal offer will be identical.

Obtain two delivered cash quotes with the exact grade and options before treating the published amounts as a payable price difference. Ask about registration, delivery, paint, accessories and the validity of the proposed car. If financing, compare the complete credit agreement for the same deposit, term and mileage; a deposit contribution does not become an automatic cash discount. Do not use an IM6 lease rental or Kia P11D value as the purchase price.

388 and 361 miles describe a shortlist, not a motorway guarantee

MG publishes 388 miles WLTP combined for 100 Long Range; Kia gives 361 miles WLTP combined for Air on its 19-inch wheels. The MG's 510-mile city figure and Kia's 475-mile city figure are different operating profiles and do not describe a long motorway leg. Nominal and usable battery labels also need to remain distinct rather than being used to invent an efficiency result.

Use the declared ranges for shortlisting, then plan your actual route with weather, load and charging reserve. Check where you would stop with passengers, how much reserve you want on arrival and what happens if the planned charger is occupied or unavailable. A larger catalogue range matters when it changes that route in a useful way; it does not establish a measured winter advantage or lower cost. We have not produced a common loaded-motorway or cold-weather test.

The charger you reach matters more than the headline peak

The MG technical table declares 396 kW maximum DC capability and an estimated 17 minutes from 10 to 80% on the specified 350 kW public charger. Kia declares 18 minutes over 10 to 80% on its specified 350 kW supply; its note requires suitable 800 V charging equipment and states that battery temperature and weather affect the result. MG likewise describes standardised test conditions and variation with the battery, charger and environment.

Treat these as manufacturer sessions, not a measured one-minute advantage on your journey. Maximum power is not the average maintained through a stop. Nor does an 800 V label guarantee that every motorway charger will deliver the expected session. The manufacturers' own 50 kW examples are much longer: MG lists 1 hour 30 minutes and Kia 1 hour 16 minutes for 10 to 80%. They concern different energy quantities and source conditions, so neither becomes our equal-distance charging test.

Before purchase, inspect the chargers on your normal route, access and payment requirements, opening hours and an alternative stop. Ask both retailers to demonstrate route planning and battery preparation for a rapid charger. A cabin and navigation workflow you can use without distraction may be more valuable across a year than a small ideal-session difference.

Both support 11 kW AC; the published home examples use different supplies

The IM6 has an 11 kW onboard AC charger, but its technical table's 10-to-100% home example uses a 7 kW supply and gives 16 hours. Kia's 10-to-100% example uses an 11 kW three-phase supply and gives 7 hours 35 minutes. The start and end percentages are aligned, but the electrical supplies are not. Those entries do not prove that Air takes half the time on the same household connection.

Compare the same supply and battery window before calling either car quicker to charge at home. Ask an installer what your property can safely supply, whether three-phase service is available, and which cable, protections and installation work the quote includes. Neither a large battery nor an 11 kW onboard rating makes a standard domestic socket a suitable everyday installation. Use the actual energy you need overnight when planning the routine, with allowances for losses and interruptions.

The equipment difference is tangible; ease of use needs your own demonstration

The MG Long Range column includes a twelve-way powered driver's seat with memory and power lumbar adjustment, a powered passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outer seats, a heat pump and a hands-free power tailgate. It also lists a 20-speaker system, 360-degree parking camera and four-wheel steering. The camera and parking aids support the driver; they do not replace checking the surroundings.

Air has manual front-seat adjustment, front heated seats, a heated steering wheel, six-speaker audio, front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. It does not acquire the GT-Line S ventilated seats, surround-view monitor, premium sound or smart power tailgate just because those appear elsewhere on Kia's website. Manual adjustment can be perfectly adequate for one regular driver; frequent driver changes may make the MG memory function more useful.

Price the equipment actually supplied, then try the seat and control tasks before paying for a richer list. Set both cars up for each driver, change temperature, demist, select a destination and check charging information while stationary. MG uses a large upper display and a central touchscreen; Kia combines its dual displays with a digital infotainment/climate control panel. We are not awarding a distraction score or claiming our own usability test. A richer feature list does not excuse a control that you find awkward on repeated journeys.

Bring the luggage and try the parking turn

MG declares a 665-litre rear boot reference for Long Range with seats in place, plus a separate 32-litre front compartment. Kia's table gives 490 litres behind the rear seats without premium sound and a separate 52-litre RWD front compartment. We have not established a common luggage measurement method for these references, so we do not promise an exact extra usable volume. Put the same cases or pushchair into both while preserving the seats you need.

The MG is a substantial car: its UK sheet gives 4,904 mm length, 1,988 mm body width and 2,190 mm including mirrors. Four-wheel steering and its declared 10.18 m turning circle are worth demonstrating in your parking manoeuvre, but do not make the body narrower or create door-opening room. Kia's 11.62 m turning-circle reference alone does not show which car is easier in your particular space. Check access, visibility and tailgate clearance rather than buying from a single number.

China-side evidence

Use the UK car and contract, not another market’s specification

The relevant IM6 is the UK 100 Long Range, not an Australian Platinum, a Chinese LS6 or a Launch Edition demonstration car. The EV6 is the current UK Air 84. Equipment and software from those other versions cannot complete either order. No comparable reliability rate, insurance cost or resale forecast has been established here.

Ask the local workshop about service booking, charging faults and replacement transport for the exact car. Warranty duration is not a measured repair-time advantage. For a one-car household, a workable local support plan deserves to be considered alongside the seat, control and charging demonstrations.

Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.

Choose the car that improves a repeated task

If Air carries the household, its route and charging routine work, and manual seat adjustment is acceptable, it is a sound first quotation. Choose IM6 Long Range when the actual cabin, seating functions or parking manoeuvre give you a useful benefit worth the amount on a completed proposal. If both do the job equally well, let the verified cash or full finance terms and support arrangements decide.

This is UK documentary research checked on 21 October 2026, not a road, charging, comfort or reliability test by CathayEV. Keep each manufacturer's published conditions and the delivered vehicle specification on the order. See other UK buying guides if either car fails your practical requirements.

Questions before ordering Long Range or Air

Which exact IM6 and EV6 are compared?
UK IM6 100 Long Range RWD, with 100 kWh nominal and 96.5 kWh usable capacity, versus UK EV6 Air 84.0 kWh RWD on 19-inch wheels. Air is not GT-Line S and Long Range is not Launch Edition.
Is the MG definitely one minute quicker to charge?
No measured advantage is established. MG declares 17 minutes and Kia 18 minutes for 10-80% using specified high-power equipment and source conditions. Actual stops depend on the battery, charger and environment.
Why not compare the two home-charging times directly?
MG gives a 7 kW, 16-hour example and Kia an 11 kW three-phase, 7-hour-35-minute example, both 10-100%. They use different supplies. Compare a session on the connection available at your home.
Does Air include the same comfort equipment?
No. Air has manual front-seat adjustment and front heating. The selected MG lists powered front seats, driver memory, front ventilation, rear outer-seat heating and a power tailgate. Try the functions you would actually use; do not add flagship Kia equipment.
Can I subtract the two advertised amounts as a guaranteed saving?
No. The MG configured retail reference includes VAT but your complete delivered total needs confirmation; Kia lists a separate Air 84 OTR reference. Obtain two finished proposals with the exact car, options and charges.
