OMODA 5 SHS-H Knight vs Yaris Cross Icon: the UK OTR gap

Two non-plug hybrids, a £1,690 advertised entry-price gap, and the new 2027 Icon Hybrid 130. Compare the quoted cars, screen sizes, wheels and warranty conditions.

The verdict

Start with the OMODA if keeping the advertised entry OTR price below £26,000 and getting the larger listed central display matter most. Put the new Yaris Cross Icon Hybrid 130 alongside it if its controls, driving response and your local Toyota service arrangement justify a higher quotation. Neither needs plugging in. The £1,690 difference between current entry references is a shopping starting point, not a guaranteed saving on the supplied cars or their running costs.

Name the hybrid Knight and the new Icon, not just the badge

The OMODA here is the UK OMODA 5 SHS-H Knight. It is the self-charging petrol hybrid, rather than the 1.6-litre petrol Knight or the battery-electric E5. The national model page separates those powertrains. Lookers also lists the 1.5T SHS-H Knight 1DHT as a brand-new car to order, which establishes an active UK sales route rather than a promise of a vehicle sitting at your nearest showroom.

For Toyota, this is the new 2027-model Yaris Cross Icon Hybrid 130. Toyota announced orders on 26 August 2026 and stated customer deliveries from September. Its current UK model page shows 130 DIN hp. Earlier 2026 Icon price lists showing 116 hp are a different reference; do not use those figures as the specification of the new car in this comparison. Ask both retailers to put the model year, powertrain, grade, colour and expected delivery on the quotation.

A listing or order opening does not establish your local allocation, collection date or the equipment on a particular stock car. Those details matter especially when an older registration-year car is offered beside a newer model-year order.

Use the OTR gap before looking at monthly payments

The current OMODA model page advertises the SHS-H from £25,755 OTR. The matching Lookers Knight listing uses £25,755 as its RRP and cash price. Toyota’s current UK entry reference is £27,445, also the Icon OTR figure in its new-model launch table. Subtracting those published starting points gives £1,690. It is not a dealer discount, a comparison of finance repayments, or a forecast of money left after ownership.

Toyota explains that its base-grade OTR reference includes VAT, first-year Vehicle Excise Duty, delivery, plates and registration, while extras such as paint and personalisation are excluded. OMODA’s pricing table separately builds up its OTR figure from retail price, delivery and registration-related charges. Have each retailer itemise the final supplied-car quotation, including any paint, accessories, fees and incentives, before treating the difference as your budget headroom.

The Lookers page also contains a PCP example with its own deposit, optional final payment, mileage allowance and offer period. That is a different way of paying. A lower monthly headline can leave a larger final payment or different ownership position. Compare the full proposals on the same basis; neither a monthly headline nor this entry-price subtraction establishes the cheaper contract.

A larger declared output is a reason to test, not to assume

Both cars use petrol and an electric hybrid system without an external charging routine. This removes the need to arrange a charge point for either shortlist entry. It does not turn petrol into free energy, or give either car the electric-only trip promise of a battery-electric vehicle. OMODA’s SHS-H is also different from the SHS-P plug-in label used elsewhere in the group.

OMODA lists 224 PS for the SHS-H. Toyota lists 130 DIN hp for the new Yaris Cross powertrain. Keep the manufacturers’ stated output units and system descriptions attached to those figures; do not add engine and motor ratings together. The figures do not demonstrate how smoothly either car joins traffic, how it sounds on a hill, or how easily you can judge its response in a tight car park.

I would drive the same urban and faster-road route with the same usual passengers. Try gentle pull-away, a normal merge, low-speed manoeuvring and a hill if one is part of your week. Pay attention to the transition between engine and electric assistance rather than choosing from the larger output number alone. We have not driven or measured this pair.

Compare the screen you will operate, not the most expensive trim

The linked UK OMODA handbook lets the reader select O5 - Knight SHS-H. That selected column lists a 12.3-inch central display and a 12.3-inch instrument display. The new Toyota launch specification gives Icon a 9-inch multimedia touchscreen. The relevant comparison is therefore the central display you will use; the OMODA instrument screen is not a second central screen that should be added to its size.

A larger display gives more physical area, but its dimensions do not establish that menus, lettering or routine operations are easier for you. Set your normal driving position and ask for a demonstration of navigation, a phone connection and the climate controls. Work through the same short tasks while parked. Check whether you can return to the required page without an unwanted sequence of taps.

Do not bring equipment from OMODA Noble or Toyota Excel into this grade comparison. If a feature changes your decision, ask for the order’s equipment list and a demonstration in the actual derivative. An attractive showroom car is not proof that its equipment is included on your quoted car.

Put the wheel sizes into a tyre quotation and a rough-road drive

The selected OMODA Knight SHS-H handbook column lists 18-inch alloy wheels. Toyota’s new Icon specification lists 16-inch alloys. That is a useful difference to take to a tyre retailer and to a test drive; it is not, by itself, a measured ride-comfort or tyre-cost result.

Record the full tyre size and load specification on each offered car before requesting replacement prices. Diameter alone is not enough to identify the tyre you would buy. Include the kind of potholes, speed humps and road surfaces you actually encounter in the drive, keeping tyre pressures and vehicle condition appropriate.

Then load the people and bags you normally carry. We have not established a matched seat-position and boot-measurement comparison for these exact derivatives, so there is no luggage-volume winner here. Check passenger access, the back-seat position you need, and the bags with those seats occupied. Do not exchange usable passenger space for a larger advertised maximum you would never use.

Do not turn a range-wide MPG number into an Icon payback claim

The OMODA UK SHS-H model page gives 52.2 mpg. Toyota’s current new Yaris Cross page gives a 55.3 to 64.1 mpg range across the model line and says figures vary with grade and conditions. The Toyota range is not a measured result for the particular Icon you will collect. Request the specification and consumption reference applicable to that car before making a like-for-like fuel calculation.

Your annual distance, route, driving conditions and petrol price then determine how much a consumption difference would matter. We have not inserted an assumed annual mileage or petrol tariff, and we have not calculated a break-even distance for the £1,690 entry-reference gap. A catalogue economy claim cannot demonstrate which of two complete purchase proposals costs less over your chosen ownership period.

Get insurance quotations on the actual registrations or derivatives and ask for service-plan prices separately. Finance, insurance and maintenance differences can change the answer even when an advertised petrol-use figure looks promising. Those are quotation tasks, not numbers to fill in from an unrelated trim or country.

Read a fixed vehicle-warranty headline beside the activation conditions

OMODA’s linked UK brochure describes a vehicle warranty of seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with no mileage limit for the first three years. Toyota’s current Service Activated Warranty page describes eligible services activating cover until the next scheduled routine service, with eligible services available until the vehicle reaches ten years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

These are different structures. Toyota’s headline is not an unconditional ten-year factory warranty requiring no further action, and OMODA’s headline is not proof that every component and every kind of use receives identical cover. Ask for the supplied car’s vehicle and hybrid-component terms, exclusions and servicing obligations. The battery-electric warranty material on a manufacturer’s wider website should not be transferred to these petrol hybrids.

For a buyer who already has a convenient Toyota service relationship and is willing to maintain the eligible-service routine, that arrangement can justify keeping Icon on the shortlist despite the higher entry reference. If the OMODA quotation is more attractive, check who will actually service it and how a warranty appointment is arranged. Neither warranty duration establishes future repair speed, local parts availability, resale value or reliability for this pair.

Resolve the handbook and model-page differences before ordering

The combined OMODA model-page equipment tables and the linked live handbook do not agree on every Knight equipment entry. The selected live SHS-H handbook shows six speakers and front-seat heating and ventilation, while the corresponding model-page material read gives different audio and heating details. We therefore do not promise a particular speaker count or ventilation package as a reason to buy this car.

That discrepancy is a practical quotation question. Ask the retailer to attach the equipment list for the allocation, identify any running specification change, and demonstrate the feature that matters to you. The 12.3-inch central display and 18-inch alloys used above are consistent in the materials inspected. That consistency should not be extended to unrelated equipment by assumption.

The same care applies to assistance systems and cameras. A feature illustrated on a higher grade is not established on Icon or Knight just because both carry the same model badge. No crash-test rating from an unmatched market or derivative, and no claimed camera angle, is used to declare a safety winner in this comparison.

China-side evidence

Keep the evidence attached to the UK cars

This decision concerns current UK derivatives and UK purchase conditions. A different overseas OMODA specification, a Toyota grade sold in another country, or a foreign price translated into pounds does not establish the equipment or amount payable here. We have not established matched Chinese-market versions, dated Chinese prices or an attributable owner-rating sample for this pair.

Those gaps remain gaps. They are not zero prices or evidence of poor owner satisfaction. The material above supports a UK shortlist and the questions to resolve with the retailers; it does not establish cross-market specification equivalence or a measured ownership verdict.

Leave the second visit with two comparable proposals

This is documentary research checked on 22 October 2026, UK time. It uses current national model pages, Toyota’s 26 August 2026 new-model release, OMODA’s linked UK handbook with Knight SHS-H selected, an active UK Knight dealer listing, and the named warranty descriptions. The handbook’s revision date is not stated in the material inspected. We have not performed a test drive, consumption measurement or physical fit test.

My first shortlist choice would be the OMODA when its lower entry reference leaves useful budget headroom and its screen suits the driver. I would keep the new Icon beside it when the Toyota driving response, controls and local servicing arrangement prove more useful in person. Paying extra solely because one car says hybrid makes little sense here: both already remove the external charging task.

Before ordering, get the allocation and delivery terms, the written equipment list, the full OTR proposal, the intended payment structure and the service/warranty conditions. If the quotations differ from the starting references, make the decision again using the cars actually offered.

For a different powertrain decision, see our petrol OMODA Knight versus JAECOO full hybrid comparison. If charging is now practical, compare the JAECOO E5 Pure with BYD ATTO 2 Boost. Our UK buying guides give other local alternatives; the Yaris Cross versus ATTO 2 guide is a different pair with its own dated specification, so do not carry its older Icon figures into this 2027 decision.

Questions to settle before choosing

Do either of these hybrids need plugging in?
No. This comparison selects the OMODA 5 SHS-H full hybrid and Yaris Cross Icon Hybrid 130, not an OMODA E5 battery-electric car or a plug-in hybrid.
Is the new Yaris Cross Icon still the 116 hp version?
Toyota’s 26 August 2026 announcement makes Hybrid 130 standard across the 2027 range. The new Icon here is that version; older 2026 Icon 116 hp price lists are not substituted.
Is the OMODA guaranteed to save £1,690?
No. £1,690 is the arithmetic difference between the £25,755 and £27,445 advertised entry OTR references. Options, dealer proposals, finance and running costs can change your actual difference.
Can I assume all the Knight equipment shown online is included?
No. The model-page and linked handbook equipment entries do not all agree. Obtain the equipment list for your allocation; this article does not promise a speaker count or front-seat ventilation package.
Does the Toyota warranty mean ten years of unconditional cover?
No. The named Toyota scheme is service activated, with eligibility and scheduled-service conditions. Read the supplied car’s terms alongside OMODA’s separate vehicle-warranty terms.
