XPeng is listed, VW-backed and genuinely at the frontier of autonomous driving — but it is still loss-making and the UK footprint is small. The VW partnership is a strong signal of long-term credibility. The key watch: if deliveries stall, the UK market would be an early casualty.
The Volkswagen deal
In July 2023 Volkswagen took a 4.99% stake in XPeng for approximately €700 million — a vote of confidence from the world's second-largest automaker.
VW will co-develop two VW-branded EVs on XPeng's platform, built for China. This is a technology-licensing play as much as an investment: Volkswagen is paying for access to XPeng's software stack and XNGP autonomous-driving architecture.
Founder He Xiaopeng (何小鹏) is a serial entrepreneur who previously co-founded UCWeb (acquired by Alibaba). XPeng is listed on both NYSE (XPEV) and HKSE (9868), giving it access to capital markets — a meaningful buffer against the industry shakeout.
2023 revenue: ~¥35.8bn (~£3.8bn). Net loss narrowed to ~¥13.4bn in 2023 from ~¥91.4bn in 2022. Still loss-making, but the trajectory is the right direction.
XNGP — and the UK lobotomy
XPeng leads China on city-level autonomous driving. The UK version of the G6 gets a watered-down ADAS system. Here is what you are missing.
The UK G6 ships with XPILOT 2.5 — basic ADAS covering lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise. The Turing chip and LiDAR stack that make XNGP one of China's most capable autonomous systems are removed entirely for the European market.
This is the lobotomy story common across Chinese EVs in the UK: regulatory uncertainty around European type-approval for advanced autonomous systems means buyers pay a premium for hardware that is hobbled in software.
UK dealer network is currently limited. The G6 launched in the UK in 2024 with a small number of authorised dealers — check availability before you budget a test drive.

XPeng sits in the middle of the risk spectrum: listed, VW-backed, and genuinely at the frontier of autonomous driving — but still loss-making with a limited UK footprint. The G6's XPILOT 2.5 is capable ADAS, but a shadow of what China buyers get with XNGP. Worth considering if the G6's 451 kW rapid charging speed matters to you — nothing else at this price point comes close.
