Leapmotor B05 Design vs Renault Megane techno MY27: which UK hatch?

Two orderable UK electric hatchbacks around £30,000. Compare the named grades, grant-adjusted prices, boots, charging windows and driving priorities before signing.

The verdict

The Renault Megane techno MY27 makes the more practical UK family hatch on the published boot figure and current grant-adjusted starting price. Choose the Leapmotor B05 Design if its rear-drive character, standard panoramic roof and larger screen matter more to you, after obtaining a fresh written quote for both cars.

Buy the B05 if

Choose the B05 Design if you want the stated 300-mile WLTP range, rear-wheel drive and its single, heavily equipped trim, and its narrower boot is enough for your luggage.

Buy the Megane techno MY27 if

Choose the Megane techno MY27 if a 440-litre quoted boot, standard heat pump and Google's built-in navigation suit your regular journeys, subject to confirming the Electric Car Grant in your actual order.

Which UK cars does this compare?

This is the one-trim UK Leapmotor B05 Design with the 67.1 kWh battery against the new Renault Megane E-Tech electric techno comfort range 220hp MY27 with the 67 kWh battery. The B05 is already offered through UK dealers and the Megane has a live UK configurator, stock link and reservation path. That is stronger evidence of a real buying choice than a global model announcement. An older Megane MY26 advert, an esprit Alpine quote or a China-market Lafa 5 specification would change the comparison, so none is silently substituted here. Stock and delivery timing still depend on postcode, colour and written dealer confirmation.

The price comparison needs two fresh quotations

Renault currently displays £28,245 for a Glacier white techno MY27, including a £3,750 Electric Car Grant; its configurator says metallic paint is excluded. Leapmotor's launch information lists £30,495 OTR, and its UK site advertises a £1,500 LEAP-GRANT, making the indicated retail figure £28,995 for qualifying orders. On those specifically stated bases Renault is £750 lower. This is not a permanent price ranking: one figure depends on a public grant and the other on a manufacturer promotion, while dealer fees, options, finance and eligibility can move the amount you actually pay. Ask each dealer for the same cash, on-the-road and finance breakdown on the same day, then compare total payable rather than the monthly payment alone.

Similar range does not mean identical charging stops

Both published WLTP claims sit close to 300 miles: Leapmotor says up to 300 miles and Renault says up to 306 miles for the techno. Neither is a winter motorway promise. Leapmotor's UK model specification quotes a maximum 174 kW DC input and 30 to 80% in 18 minutes. Renault quotes 15 to 80% in 24 minutes with a standard 165 kW charger. The windows start at different states of charge, so treating 18 versus 24 as a head-to-head charging race would be misleading. Plan a familiar trip in both route planners, check real charger availability and ask how each car preconditions its battery before taking a long-distance claim as a buying reason.

Measure the boot before admiring the screen

The clearest practical separation in the published specifications is luggage space. Leapmotor gives the B05 a 345-litre rear boot, while Renault's techno specification lists a 440-litre minimum boot. The methods and underfloor treatment need checking in the actual cars, but the stated 95-litre gap makes the Megane the first one to test if you regularly carry a buggy, large suitcase or sports kit. The Renault is about 4.2 metres long; the B05's 1,880 mm quoted body width is worth checking against a narrow drive or garage. Bring the same luggage and child seat to both dealers. A larger listed boot is useful evidence, not proof that every awkward item will fit.

Choose the controls and driving feel you will live with

The B05 is rear-wheel drive and Leapmotor quotes 6.7 seconds to 62 mph. Its one UK trim includes a panoramic roof, heated seats, a 14.6-inch central display, phone mirroring and a 360-degree camera. The Megane is front-wheel drive and Renault quotes 7.6 seconds for the configured techno, with a standard heat pump, heated front seats and the 12-inch openR link system with Google built-in. The B05's acceleration is a measurable advantage; the usefulness of each interface is personal. Try entering a destination, changing cabin temperature and turning off an unwanted warning in both cars while parked, then test the ride and steering on the same roads.

China-side evidence

What the China-market Lafa 5 can and cannot tell a UK buyer

Leapmotor sells a related hatchback in China as the Lafa 5. Autohome currently displays a 4.53 user score for that model, but it is a self-selected platform rating rather than a controlled UK reliability study, and it does not identify the UK B05 Design as the same tested trim. Its quality-survey page says the owner sample is insufficient for a faults-per-100 result. Chinese listings give 500 to 605 km range across different domestic versions under their own test standard; that cannot be converted into the UK car's WLTP 300 miles or used to predict a UK winter journey. The Renault techno MY27 is assessed here from its UK materials, not by inventing a comparable Chinese Megane owner sample.

Where included, owner reports and complaints are individual accounts, not representative surveys; recalls apply only to the vehicles and markets stated in each notice. Check the source, market and date of each claim.

Insurance, warranty and tax belong in the written quote

Leapmotor's UK press information gives a four-year or 60,000-mile vehicle warranty and an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty for the B05. It also lists a £30,430 P11D value and 4% 2026/27 benefit-in-kind band; that is not a personal tax bill. A current MY27 Megane warranty, insurance group and fleet P11D value should be verified against the exact car offered, not copied from an older MY26 price guide. Neither manufacturer's pages we used establish an underwriter premium for your driver and postcode. Obtain actual insurance quotes on the vehicle registration or exact specification, ask for the full warranty documents, and compare service and finance costs before calling either hatch cheaper to own.

Our decision and the limits of this comparison

For a UK buyer placing a new order now, start with the Megane techno MY27 if boot space, a heat pump and the current grant-adjusted cash price lead your list. Start with the B05 Design if you want its quicker rear-drive performance, single-trim equipment and screen-led cabin. Then make the decision on two written quotations, an insurance quote and a back-to-back drive. This is an editorial comparison of published manufacturer data, not our road test or a measured charging trial. Figures and grant wording were checked on 24 October 2026; the dated UK GSC snapshot shows B05 model-level interest but does not establish search volume for this exact pair. Inventory, grant rules and finance offers may change.

Questions UK buyers ask

Is the B05 price a Government Electric Car Grant price?
The £28,995 figure cited here includes Leapmotor's £1,500 LEAP-GRANT, a manufacturer offer. Ask the dealer whether it applies to your order.
Does the £28,245 Megane price include the grant?
Yes. Renault's current techno MY27 configurator says it includes a £3,750 Electric Car Grant and excludes metallic paint.
Is 18 minutes versus 24 minutes a fair charging comparison?
No. Leapmotor quotes 30 to 80% while Renault quotes 15 to 80%, so the advertised durations cover different battery windows.
Which has the bigger stated boot?
Renault quotes 440 litres for the techno, against Leapmotor's 345 litres for the B05. Test the shape with your own luggage.
Do Chinese Lafa 5 owner scores prove UK B05 reliability?
No. They are self-selected China-market signals from related vehicles, not a controlled UK study of the B05 Design.
