Leapmotor B05 vs Smart #1 UK (2026): value engineering meets German design

The Leapmotor B05 is built by Leapmotor (零跑汽车), a Chinese EV start-up in which Stellantis holds a 21% equity stake and 51% of the international joint venture. For UK buyers, that Stellantis backstop matters: the dealer network, parts supply and warranty administration sit within a system that includes Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall. Brand-exit risk is as low as it gets among Chinese EV names in Britain.

The Smart #1 is a Geely–Mercedes 50/50 joint venture, engineered and manufactured in China on Geely's SEA platform — the same architecture as the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X. Mercedes handles design and brand; Geely handles manufacturing at Xi'an. For UK buyers, Smart re-launched in 2023 with a separate dealer network, not the Mercedes one. Brand-exit risk is low-to-medium: the JV is profitable but Chinese Smart volumes are modest, and if either partner re-prioritises, the brand sits awkwardly between its two parents.

Neither brand has collapsed; both are in growth mode. But the ownership structures are very different — and they produce very different ownership experiences.

The Leapmotor B05 is a single-trim proposition in the UK. At £30,495 OTR, the current LEAP-GRANT — Leapmotor's own £1,500 discount, separate from any government subsidy — brings the effective retail price to £28,995. Confirm the grant remains available when you order: it was set to run to 30 September 2026 but Leapmotor has extended promotional offers before. The PCP headline is £299 per month over 48 months with a £999 deposit at 0% APR. Company car drivers will appreciate the 4% BiK rate (2026/27) on a £30,430 P11D — around £24/month for a 20% taxpayer. WLTP range is 300 miles; real-world winter estimates from EV Database sit around 199 miles (cold, combined), rising to around 270 miles in mild conditions. DC charging peaks at 174 kW — 10–80% in roughly 24 minutes.

The Smart #1 is more complex. There are five UK trims from £29,960 (Pure, 193-mi LFP) to £44,960 (BRABUS AWD). The one most UK buyers should consider is the Pro+ at £36,960, with the 66-kWh NMC battery and 260-mile WLTP range. DC charging peaks at 150 kW (NMC), and the 22-kW AC onboard charger is a genuine differentiator — faster home and destination charging than most competitors. The BRABUS AWD (£44,960) delivers 3.9 seconds to 62 mph if that matters to you. Warranty: 3 years vehicle, 8 years / 125,000 miles battery. The vehicle warranty is simply too short for some buyers — price that into your decision. Euro NCAP 5-star (2022): adult protection 96%, one of the strongest results in its year.

The Leapmotor B05 is the better-value engineering proposition. You get RWD, 300 miles of WLTP range, 174-kW DC charging and a Stellantis-backed dealer network for effectively under £30k. The Alfa Romeo–influenced chassis (Stellantis input on tuning) gives it a driving character that UK reviewers — Top Gear and What Car? included — found genuinely engaging. The boot is small for its class (345 litres), the safety tech can be intrusive at low speed, and the Euro NCAP result, though expected to be five stars, is not yet officially published. The 4-year warranty beats the Smart #1 but trails the 7-year norms of MG and Kia.

The Smart #1 Pro+ justifies its higher price in specific ways: 22-kW AC charging is rare at any price; the Mercedes-influenced design retains strong street presence; Euro NCAP 5-star is confirmed and clean; and the dual-motor BRABUS satisfies performance buyers. But the 3-year vehicle warranty is a material negative — at £36,960 you expect more. The 0% manufacturer complaint reply rate on 车质网 in China is a flag to monitor, though UK service infrastructure may differ. The base LFP trims (193 mi) are poor value — if you're considering a Smart #1, the Pro+ is the minimum rational choice.

Choose the B05 if: you prioritise value, range, and fast charging at the lowest outlay; you use salary sacrifice; you want the Stellantis parts network. Choose the Smart #1 Pro+ if: the 22-kW home/destination AC charging suits your lifestyle; you value the Mercedes design pedigree and confirmed NCAP; you can live with the 3-year warranty.
