New G6 Long Range vs iX1 xDrive30: Australian charging and family fit

G6 Long Range for a useful DC route and normal-seat load; iX1 xDrive30 for its body and AWD task. Compare exact builds and full quotes, with BMW’s current range discrepancy retained.

The verdict

Put New G6 RWD Long Range first if its declared DC charging capability and normal-seat luggage arrangement serve your trips, and rear-wheel drive meets your needs. Put iX1 xDrive30 first if its 4,500 mm body and all-wheel-drive layout suit your parking and driving task better. Close both exact vehicle specifications and complete Australian quotes before choosing: the G6 card price is not a confirmed driveaway total, and the BMW cash proposal is still to obtain.

Charging stops, parking and a complete quote come first

These cars answer a real Australian family-shopping question without requiring the same answer for every household. A car that fits the garage but does not carry the regular load is a poor match. So is a fast-charging specification when the route cannot supply it. Start with passengers, parking and regular stops, then ask each dealer to quote the exact vehicle that passed those checks.

Do not choose the BMW solely because an AWD badge sounds more reassuring, or the G6 solely because its peak charger number is larger. Tyres, conditions, installation and the actual journey remain part of the decision. We have not driven, loaded or charged the two together, so the judgments below concern declared specifications and the practical checks they suggest.

Select the current Long Range and xDrive30

The selected XPENG is the current New G6 RWD Long Range card: 218 kW, 440 Nm and an 80.8 kWh gross LFP battery. Its reference range is 525 km WLTP on the listed 20-inch wheels. It is not the older G6 Long Range with different battery chemistry and charging hardware, and it is not the current AWD Performance card that appears alongside it. The exact build belongs on the order.

The BMW is iX1 xDrive30 with AWD. The current technical page also contains eDrive20 data, which must not be substituted because it has a different drivetrain. For xDrive30, BMW distinguishes 225 kW nominal output from a temporary increase to 230 kW lasting less than ten seconds. We do not present that temporary rating as continuous power or compare it as a sustained advantage over the G6.

Both current Australian sites provide buying or retailer routes. A live configurator establishes a route to enquire about the model; it does not confirm a particular VIN, delivery slot or identical equipment across production months. Ask for the exact build and specification schedule before paying a deposit.

Test the regular five-seat load before using folded-seat figures

BMW lists a 4,500 mm body length and 2,104 mm width including mirrors. Measure the garage opening and the space needed to open doors, remove child restraints and reach the charging point. A vehicle fitting between two walls does not establish that passengers can get out comfortably. Check the actual G6 in the same parking space rather than mixing a mirror-inclusive BMW figure with an unrelated body-width measurement.

The current G6 Long Range card declares a 571-litre boot, or 1,374 litres with the rear seats folded. BMW gives 490-1,495 litres, depending on configuration. These references are useful for choosing what to inspect; they are not a shared loading test. The larger normal-seat number and the larger folded-seat number belong to different cars, so there is no single capacity winner for every seating arrangement.

Bring the pram, cases or work equipment used most often. Keep all required passenger seats available and check whether the cable remains accessible beneath the load. For family use, the opening, floor and restraint access may matter more than a maximum with seats removed from service. A dealer demonstration can reveal a mismatch before ownership, without pretending the published litres measure the same load plane.

12 and 29 minutes are references, not guaranteed stops

XPENG declares up to 451 kW DC and a 12-minute 10-80% session for the selected New G6 Long Range. BMW declares up to 130 kW DC and 29 minutes for the same percentage window. The window matches, but the tests are separate. We do not claim that every G6 stop saves seventeen minutes, or that either car sustains its peak power throughout the session.

XPENG notes the effects of starting charge, battery and vehicle condition, ambient temperature and charger type. BMW gives its charging reference at 23°C after a preceding drive and also qualifies it by usage and conditions. The station’s available output, shared power and access can change the usefulness of the advertised capability. A lower-output stop can limit a car with a much higher peak rating.

Before favouring the G6 for long journeys, identify actual high-output sites on your usual route and a backup if one is occupied or unavailable. Include the arrival reserve, queue and payment time. Its declared capability is a reason to plan that route, not a promise about the complete travel day. If most charging happens while the car is already parked at home, the DC difference may matter only occasionally.

Check the fitted AC charger and the range reference

The G6 card lists 11 kW AC. BMW’s technical page gives 11/22 kW AC alternatives, but that does not establish a 22 kW onboard charger as standard on the vehicle being offered. Have the retailer identify the installed hardware and any option charge. Suitable three-phase supply is needed to exploit higher AC capability; an ordinary lower-power installation can be the limiting factor. The published AC session windows also differ, so we do not compare them as equal tasks.

Range needs similar care. The selected G6 card gives 525 km WLTP on R20 wheels. BMW’s current xDrive30 overview says up to 410 km WLTP, while its current technical page has an xDrive30 block showing up to 400 km. Ask which approved wheel and vehicle configuration applies to the actual quote. We retain that discrepancy rather than selecting the more convenient number and calculating a guaranteed range gap.

BMW’s 64.8 kWh entry does not resolve gross versus usable capacity in the cited field; XPENG explicitly labels its 80.8 kWh figure gross. Subtracting them would therefore create an unsupported energy comparison. For your route, retain a sensible charging reserve and account for speed, load and weather. None of these declared figures guarantees the distance travelled between stops.

Compare the delivered equipment, then try its controls

The selected G6 card lists rear ISOFIX, seven airbags, a surround-view system and parking assistance. It also describes driver-assistance functions and separate central and driver displays. XPENG qualifies availability by production month and the actual vehicles sold. Confirm which functions are enabled on the offered build and try the relevant controls while stationary. Driver assistance does not remove the driver’s responsibility.

BMW’s current model page illustrates cabin, parking and assistance equipment, some of it as optional packages. Images of a panoramic roof, seating feature or assistance display do not make each item standard on every xDrive30. Ask the dealer to distinguish standard equipment, fitted options and subscriptions or services that require separate confirmation.

With children, try the restraints and normal front-seat positions in both demonstration vehicles. With bulky work gear, check access to the boot and cabin after loading. A camera image or feature count cannot establish visibility, restraint fit, comfort or real assistance performance. The useful comparison is the equipment on the two actual proposals and how it works for the regular occupants.

A card price and finance rate do not close the purchase

The current G6 Long Range card displays A$56,800. It is a model-card reference here, not a confirmed personalised driveaway total. Obtain a written proposal showing paint, delivery, statutory charges, accessories and any charging equipment. We have not established the current cash total for the selected iX1 xDrive30, so there is no supported price difference or ownership payback calculation.

XPENG advertises a 2.88% fixed consumer-loan rate and a 2.88% comparison rate, with a maximum three-year term and no balloon option. The legal example for the comparison rate is a A$30,000 secured loan over five years; it is not your personal three-year repayment schedule. Approval, charges and the actual amount financed still matter. Eligible new and demonstrator New G6 models must meet the manufacturing-date restriction, and applications must be received and settled by 31 December 2026. Stocks, participating dealers and other offer conditions apply. A rate is not a cash discount.

Choose the G6 when the exact RWD Long Range specification, useful luggage arrangement and available DC route fit the household. Choose xDrive30 when its body and AWD layout meet a specific need and its equipped proposal is acceptable. If neither fits the parking, load or charging plan, broaden the search. This documentary comparison uses Australian sources checked on 20 October 2026; it is not a shared road or charging test. See other buying guides.

Questions before requesting the final quotes

Is this the older G6 Long Range or the current New G6?
It selects the current Australian New G6 RWD Long Range card with 218 kW, 440 Nm and an 80.8 kWh gross LFP battery. Older battery and charging figures, and the current AWD Performance card, do not describe this selection.
Does BMW’s 230 kW rating mean continuous output?
BMW describes 225 kW nominal output and a temporary increase to 230 kW for less than ten seconds. We keep that qualification and do not present the temporary rating as continuous power.
Will the G6 always save seventeen minutes at a DC charger?
No. The makers quote 12 and 29 minutes for 10-80% under separate conditions. Starting charge, battery temperature, station capability and other factors change the actual session and complete stop.
Does every iX1 xDrive30 have 22 kW AC charging?
The current technical page lists 11/22 kW alternatives. Confirm the onboard charger fitted to the actual order and any option cost; the page does not establish 22 kW as standard on every offered car. A compatible supply is also necessary.
Can I use A$56,800 and 410 km to calculate a complete value winner?
No. The G6 card price is not a confirmed driveaway proposal, the BMW cash total is unknown here, and BMW’s current overview and technical page show different xDrive30 range references. Close the actual configurations and quotes rather than manufacturing a precise price or range advantage.
