New G6 Long Range vs EV5 Air SR: Australian family and charging choice
G6’s current rapid charging and declared range favour frequent longer trips; EV5 Air SR deserves the first quote if its exact equipment and range cover your routine.
Charging-led trips or a simpler Air specification?
Choose the New G6 Long Range first if frequent intercity trips make its current rapid-charging capability and larger declared range useful, and the family actually fits its cabin and boot. Choose EV5 Air Standard Range first if 400 km declared WLTP range covers your planned stops and its included seating, controls and lower driveaway estimate meet the household’s needs. The Air is a specific entry grade: it does not inherit GT-Line’s panoramic roof, surround-view camera or ventilated seats.
Do not call the G6 A$6,810 dearer by subtracting the two advertisements. Its A$56,800 MSRP is before on-road costs and chosen extras; Kia’s A$49,990 is a conditional driveaway estimate. The decision needs two current delivered quotations and a realistic route, not just the fastest headline recharge.
Current Australian G6 Long Range and MY26 Air SR
The selected XPENG is the New G6 RWD Long Range: 80.8 kWh gross LFP battery, 218 kW, 440 Nm and standard 20-inch wheels. Its Australian configurator identifies this variant independently of the AWD Performance and Standard Range cards. Earlier G6 comparisons using an 87.5 kWh NMC battery do not describe this order.
The Kia is the MY26 EV5 Air 2WD Standard Range, with its 64.2 kWh LFP battery and front-wheel drive. It is not the 88.1 kWh Air Long Range, Earth AWD or GT-Line. Both have current local sales and test-drive routes; the availability of the required colour, production specification and delivery date still needs a dealer response.

Match the delivered contracts before deciding the premium
XPENG’s current Australian configurator maps A$56,800 MSRP to the RWD Long Range. Registration, stamp duty, dealer delivery and selected options are not established as included in that number. No postcode-specific delivered quotation has been obtained here.
Kia advertises EV5 Air SR driveaway estimated from A$49,990 until 31 October 2026 at participating dealers. Its terms include 12 months’ registration, a CTP estimate for a private buyer with a good driving record, stamp duty, statutory and dealer delivery charges. Individual circumstances can change the amount; the offer is for private buyers.
The separate A$2,000 cashback is a purchase-price reduction for eligible in-stock new or demonstrator EV5s bought and delivered from 1 September to 31 October, while stocks last. It is an alternative to the 1.88% comparison-rate finance campaign, not an automatic additional saving on every estimate. Ask whether any benefit is already included in the contract before deducting it. The finance campaign has its own 20% minimum deposit, application/settlement dates, eligibility and loan conditions; an advertised comparison rate is not your total loan cost.
Request the same paint, delivery date and required accessories on both cash proposals. Put finance, trade-in valuation and any campaign benefit on separate lines. The final cash gap is unknown until those two written totals exist.

What changes when you settle into these exact grades
The G6’s selected configuration lists a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and 10.25-inch driver display, with a phone key, UWB remote and NFC card key. The current model presentation promotes ventilated and heated front seats and a comfort-focused cabin; confirm the production specification and demonstrate the controls on the car offered. A digital-key list does not establish that your phone or preferred backup routine works reliably.
The EV5 Air’s Australian MY26 table gives a powered driver’s seat with lumbar support, a manual front passenger seat, heated front seats and three-cell driver massage. Its rear seats recline and split 60:40. The panoramic display combines 12.3-inch instruments, a five-inch climate monitor and 12.3-inch infotainment. Wired and wireless phone projection are listed.
Air does not include the smart power tailgate, panoramic sunroof, surround-view monitor, HUD, wireless phone charger or ventilated front seats shown higher in the range. Front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera are included. If one missing item is essential, obtain a different grade’s complete quote rather than treating a GT-Line photograph as Air specification.
Bring both drivers and connect the phones you use. Check a temperature change, a camera view and a navigation instruction without a salesperson performing every step. A comfortable driving position and an understandable parking routine are useful regardless of the car’s screen size.

The school run needs a full cabin, not a larger litre total
XPENG declares 571 litres behind the rear seats and 1,374 with them folded. Kia gives 513 litres VDA behind the seats, 1,714 folded and a separate 67-litre front compartment with a 25 kg limit. We have not established an identical measurement method for XPENG’s figure or loaded the cars together. Do not add front and rear spaces to manufacture one interchangeable luggage box.
Fit the child restraints behind the normal driving positions and load the pushchair, sports bag and shopping while every needed seat remains available. Check whether the items fit below the luggage cover, where the charge cable goes and how much opening height the garage permits. The EV5’s reclining rear backrests are useful only if the actual passenger and luggage arrangement still works.
Kia lists three top-tether anchors and two ISOFIX positions; verify that your restraints suit the intended seating positions in each car. The Air’s manually operated tailgate is also worth trying with the family member who will load it. Practical access can be a reason to choose or reject a car even when both paper volumes appear adequate.

525 and 400 km are route-planning references
The current Long Range G6 configuration declares 525 km WLTP on its standard 20-inch wheels. EV5 Air SR declares 400 km combined WLTP. That gives the G6 more declared distance between full-charge references, not a guaranteed motorway or winter advantage of exactly 125 km. Speed, temperature, load, climate use and battery condition affect both.
Start with the actual weekend route and the chargers you can use, leaving a reserve for an unavailable site or a detour. A car that reaches your usual destination and can charge there may be more convenient than a longer-range car needing an awkward stop. Conversely, frequent longer legs can make G6’s extra declared range valuable before considering peak charging power.
XPENG’s current configuration states up to 451 kW DC and a 12-minute 10-80% session under conditions. Kia’s MY26 Air SR table gives approximately 36 minutes from 10% to 80% using a 350 kW charger, or about 57 minutes using a 50 kW charger. The 350 kW label describes Kia’s test charger, not the EV5’s vehicle-side acceptance. Neither result is our Australian road-trip measurement.
Those shared percentage endpoints make the published sessions relevant to discuss, but the battery sizes, test conditions and infrastructure are different. Check charger capability, battery preparation, arrival state of charge and likely queuing. Do not convert the peak-power ratio into a proportionate reduction in every stop.

Overnight recovery is a separate question from rapid charging
G6 Long Range lists 11 kW AC and a 5%-100% reference of 9.2 hours. EV5 Air SR has a 6.6 kW single-phase onboard charger; Kia lists about 9 hours 43 minutes from 10% to 100% using a 7 kW supply. These are different windows and supplies, not a matched home-charge race. Installing a higher-rated wall unit does not make the Air accept more than its onboard limit.
Ask a licensed electrician about the available circuit, supply and installation permissions where you park. The practical requirement is to restore the energy you used during the available off-peak or overnight period. We have not measured either car’s charging losses or derived an electricity bill from gross battery capacity.
If home charging is unavailable, price and walk through your regular public option before ordering. Include the time needed to get there, the tariff and whether the car can stay connected when you need it. G6’s rapid capability is useful only when a suitable working charger is actually accessible.
The entry grade still needs an ownership quotation
Obtain the applicable Australian warranty documents, battery-capacity terms, service schedule, roadside rules and insurance quote for the actual car. We have not completed an equivalent long-term servicing, repair-time or resale comparison, and a larger dealer count or warranty headline alone would not prove a lower ownership cost.
Kia’s Air table includes numerous assistance systems and front/rear parking sensors; the G6 configuration also lists active driver assistance. Demonstrate the alerts and controls and read the limitations. We have not reconciled two applicable crash-test reports to rank safety here, and no assistance list removes the driver’s responsibility.
Current Australian documents and a family-use decision
This comparison uses Australian manufacturer material checked on 21 October 2026 UTC, including Kia’s MY26 specification. It is documentary research: we have not driven, charged or measured these cars together. Older Australian G6/EV5 comparisons establish why buyers cross-shop them; their older G6 battery, prices and test results are not adopted as current hardware evidence.
Put G6 Long Range first if its confirmed range and suitable rapid-charging stops change your frequent trips, and its cabin passes the same family trial. Put EV5 Air SR first if its range is enough, the actual Air equipment works and its final delivered quotation preserves the value you expected. If the Air is missing something essential, revise the grade and quote openly. Continue with other Australian buying guides.
Australian buyer questions
- Is this the older G6 with the 87.5 kWh battery?
- No. The selected Australian New G6 RWD Long Range has an 80.8 kWh gross LFP battery, 218 kW and standard 20-inch wheels. An older NMC G6 review cannot supply its current charging or range specification.
- Is the G6 exactly A$6,810 more expensive?
- No. A$56,800 is the G6 MSRP before on-road costs and selected extras; A$49,990 is a conditional EV5 Air SR driveaway estimate. Two matched delivered quotations are needed before calculating an actual premium.
- Can I take A$2,000 off every EV5 price and also use the finance offer?
- The cashback has in-stock purchase and delivery conditions and is an alternative to the finance campaign. They cannot be combined. Ask the dealer whether any reduction is already included in the written price; do not deduct it twice.
- Does EV5 Air have the sunroof and surround-view camera?
- The current MY26 Air table excludes those higher-grade items. Air does have front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. The power tailgate, HUD, wireless phone charger and ventilated front seats are also not Air inclusions.
- Does 12 minutes versus 36 prove my charging stop will be 24 minutes shorter?
- No. Both published references cover 10%-80%, but use different cars, battery sizes, infrastructure and test conditions. Charger capability, battery state, temperature and queues affect a real stop. Neither number is our measured session.
