A new-car family choice starts with seats and energy

Start with smart #1 Premium if a sliding rear bench, standard head-up display and access to suitable 22 kW three-phase AC charging solve your family routine. Consider ATTO 3 EVO Design if its split-fold rear seat and separate front storage fit your load, you value ventilated front seats, and its declared DC capability suits frequent charging stops. Confirm both new-car quotations and the actual ordered specification before choosing: neither current cash total is closed here.

The useful distinction is how these features work together over a normal week. A family may need more rear legroom on school days and more luggage space with fewer passengers at weekends. Another may keep child seats in place and prefer to store charging equipment separately. Those are different loading arrangements, so a bench demonstration is more useful than comparing the biggest published boot number.

Charging creates another split. A Premium that can use a suitable three-phase AC point while you work has a different appeal from a car replenished mainly at motorway DC stations. If both spend every night on the same lower-power home supply, the advertised AC difference may rarely matter. Choose the capability your locations can actually supply.

Conditions behind the decision

Test the bench with your passengers and child seats; moving it forward does not create extra legroom and luggage space simultaneously.

These are selected-grade equipment references, not a shared comfort test; do not add Excellence features to Design.

A suitable installation and supply are required; Premium’s capability does not halve charging time on an ordinary single-phase home connection.

The charge window matches, but these are separate manufacturer references, not a guaranteed five-minute stop advantage.

Compare the two complete new-car proposals; earlier used-car values and expired campaigns do not price these orders.

Order EVO Design and Premium by their exact names

The BYD in this comparison is the new ATTO 3 EVO Design: rear-wheel drive, 74.8 kWh Blade LFP battery and a declared 230 kW motor. It is not the earlier front-drive ATTO 3, and it is not the AWD EVO Excellence. The current dedicated UK EVO page and linked specification distinguish these choices. A classic ATTO 3 review or a photograph of Excellence does not establish Design’s equipment.

The current smart UK page labels its technical, exterior and interior equipment sections as #1 Premium. Its charging footnote excludes Pure and Pro from the higher AC and DC capabilities, so those lower grades must not be substituted into the Premium proposal. We do not complete the currently offered Premium’s battery capacity, motor output, range or delivered model year from an older stock listing.

Both brands provide current order, configuration or retailer routes. Confirm the grade, build, colour, equipment and delivery date on the actual new-car order. A stock link or a live campaign does not reserve a vehicle, and a brochure publication date is not the model year of your delivered car.

Try the sliding bench before awarding a space winner

Premium’s current equipment description identifies a sliding rear bench. That allows you to redistribute the space between rear passengers and luggage. Try its positions with the front seats set for the regular adults. A useful movement for an occasional adult passenger may cease to be useful once a particular child restraint or pushchair is installed. Follow the car and restraint instructions rather than moving seats solely to maximise a brochure volume.

EVO Design lists a 40:60 split-fold rear seat, with no sliding-bench adjustment specified in the selected sheet. It also declares 490 litres of rear boot space, rising to 1,360 with the rear seats folded, plus a separate 101-litre front compartment. The front storage can be useful for items you want away from family luggage, but it does not turn the rear opening into one continuous 591-litre compartment.

We have not established a Premium boot volume on a matched seat position and measurement method here. Nor have we loaded these cars together. Take the same bags, keep the required seats available and check the opening, floor and access to the charging cable. A folded-seat maximum is irrelevant when those seats must carry passengers. If neither arrangement works, the right conclusion is to broaden the body-style search.

This is a new-car equipment and packaging decision. If you are inspecting an earlier registered example instead, the used ATTO 3 guide covers a different purchase task; do not carry its classic-model specifications into an EVO order.

Design’s ventilation and Premium’s HUD are specific differences

The EVO Design column includes powered front seats, heating and ventilation for both front occupants, dual-zone air conditioning, a heat pump, powered tailgate and front and rear parking sensors with a 360-degree camera. These are useful features to request in the demonstration vehicle. Design does not include the panoramic sunroof, rear-seat heating or W-HUD that the sheet assigns to Excellence.

Premium’s current UK list includes powered and heated front seats, a head-up display, Panoramic Halo Roof, heat pump and a Beats system with 13 speakers. Its page also describes matrix headlamps. We do not infer front-seat ventilation or a particular current battery from that list. Check the actual Premium build on the order rather than assuming all photographs show the vehicle being supplied.

If front-seat ventilation matters on your regular journeys, Design has a clearly identified reason to be tried first. If keeping driving information in a head-up display or adjusting rear space is more useful, Premium supplies a different reason. Neither feature list measures seat support, camera quality, sound quality or ease of use. Adjust both seats, pair your phone and try the controls while stationary before assigning value to the equipment.

22 kW AC is useful only at a place that can deliver it

EVO Design has an 11 kW onboard AC charger. smart’s current Premium-applicable footnote gives up to 22 kW AC with a three-phase supply and around three hours from 10 to 80% under optimal conditions. It explicitly assigns a lower single-phase capability to Pure and Pro, so the grade and installed charger matter.

A 22 kW public AC point at a workplace, destination or regular stop may make Premium’s capability relevant while you are already parked. Check access rules, available output, tariffs and whether the point shares power. The advantage disappears if the supply or station is the bottleneck. It does not follow that Premium charges twice as quickly from a normal single-phase home installation.

For home charging, obtain an assessment of the supply, circuit, protection and installation permissions. Confirm the cable and hardware supplied with each order. BYD’s published AC session uses a different start and finish percentage from smart’s example, so we do not compare those session times as equivalent tasks. The practical question is whether the available parking period replenishes your own normal use.

The same 10-80% window still needs different test conditions

BYD declares up to 220 kW DC and a 25-minute 10-80% session for EVO. Its footnote describes a 25°C ambient test and recommends a high-performance station rated at 350 kW or above, while noting battery temperature, starting charge and station power allocation. That is a declared test reference, not a promise that every UK charger will deliver that session.

smart gives up to 150 kW DC and approximately 30 minutes from 10 to 80% under optimal conditions for the Premium-applicable specification. The percentage window matches BYD’s, but the tests were not conducted together. We do not turn the five-minute difference in the documents into a measured advantage at every stop, or assume a peak power remains available for the whole session.

For regular long journeys, identify the actual stations, an alternative stop and a reasonable arrival reserve. Include access, waiting and payment time. If the charging hardware on your route rarely offers the required output, the headline difference may be less useful than it appears. If high-output stops are frequent and convenient, EVO’s declared capability is a legitimate reason to investigate that route in more detail.

Close the new-car order after the family demonstration

Obtain the complete cash total for the exact Design and Premium, with paint, accessories, delivery and any required charging equipment separated. Neither current cash proposal is established here, so there is no supported price premium or payback calculation. Do not price these new orders from a used classic ATTO 3 or an expired smart promotion.

BYD’s current EVO retail campaign covers eligible participating-retailer orders from 7 October to 31 December 2026, subject to availability. It advertises down to 0% APR over a 49-month PCP, but a complete personal example is still required. Deposit, mileage terms, optional final payment and total payable belong on the proposal. A finance headline is not a cash discount.

Choose Premium when the sliding bench and identified standard equipment demonstrably fit the family, especially if compatible three-phase AC charging is part of the week. Choose Design when its front-seat ventilation and separate storage fit better and its declared DC capability serves your routes. This documentary comparison uses current UK sources checked on 20 October 2026; we have not performed a shared road, loading or charging test. For another task, see other buying guides.

Questions before ordering

Is this the earlier ATTO 3 against a used smart #1?
No. It selects a new UK ATTO 3 EVO Design with rear drive, 74.8 kWh and 230 kW against a current Premium order. Earlier used-car prices, front-drive specifications and condition checks answer a different purchase task.
Does EVO Design have Excellence’s HUD and panoramic roof?
No. The selected UK sheet makes the panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats and W-HUD unavailable on Design. Design does list powered, heated and ventilated front seats. Keep the equipment schedule tied to the ordered grade.
Does Premium’s sliding bench guarantee more room for everyone?
It lets you redistribute rear passenger and luggage space. Moving it forward does not create both advantages at once. Test the actual passengers, restraints and luggage with the front seats in their normal positions.
Will Premium charge at 22 kW from an ordinary home supply?
The up-to-22 kW reference requires a compatible three-phase supply and charging installation. A station or home supply can limit power. It does not imply twice the charging speed on a normal single-phase connection.
Is EVO guaranteed to save five minutes at every rapid-charge stop?
No. The two makers quote 25 and 30 minutes for 10-80%, but under separate conditions. BYD’s reference includes 25°C and a suitable high-output station. Actual battery, starting percentage and charger conditions can change the result.
