Smart #1 vs Smart #5 (UK 2026): Same Brand, Two Very Different Cars

The Smart #1 and Smart #5 share a brand and a joint-venture parent (Geely–Mercedes), but they answer entirely different questions. The #1 (from £29,960) is a compact electric SUV — 4.27 metres long, up to 273 miles WLTP, 150 kW DC charging — suited to city dwellers and commuters who occasionally need family space. The #5 (from £39,800) is a full-size family SUV — 4.70 metres, 630-litre boot, up to 367 miles WLTP, and (on Pro+ and above) 400 kW DC charging that delivers 10–80% in 18 minutes. Both carry a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, an 8-year/125,000-mile battery warranty and a 3-year vehicle warranty. The verdict

Size settles this, not the badge. Four adults, luggage and a tow bar mean the #5: 630 litres of boot against 313, 1,600 kg of towing on every trim, and from the £43,800 Pro+ a 10 to 80 per cent stop in 18 minutes. If the car is mostly one or two people around town, the #1 Pro+ at £36,960 is £6,840 less, returns about 3.7 miles per kWh where the #5 managed 2.4 in a winter test, and stays under the £40,000 road-tax threshold.

Who makes them — and is the brand safe to buy?

Both the Smart #1 and Smart #5 are products of the same company: Smart Automobile Co., Ltd., a 50-50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz (design and brand) and Geely Automobile Group (manufacturing, platform engineering). They are built in Xi'an, China, at Geely's highly automated 'lights-out' factory with an annual capacity of up to 300,000 vehicles. UK sales and servicing run through Smart UK Automotive Ltd, backed by the Mercedes-Benz authorised partner network.

The #1 uses Geely's SEA2 platform — the same architecture under the Volvo EX30. The #5 uses the newer SEA3, shared with the Polestar 4 and Zeekr X. Brand survival risk for both is very low: Geely and Mercedes-Benz are both Fortune Global 500 organisations, and neither has shown any sign of winding down the Smart JV.

In China both models are marketed under the Smart 精灵 (Spirit) name. UK buyers get right-hand drive, localised infotainment (the 'Leo' AI assistant replaces China's Doubao AI), and the same core hardware. There are no DVSA safety recalls on either model as of July 2026.

Size and practicality: the numbers that matter

This is the clearest divide between the two cars. The Smart #1 is a compact SUV — 4,270 mm long, 1,822 mm wide — comparable in footprint to a Volkswagen ID.3 or Hyundai Kona Electric. The Smart #5 is a full-size family SUV at 4,695 mm long and 1,920 mm wide, closer to a Tesla Model Y in dimensions.

The boot difference is dramatic. The #1 offers 313–323 litres with seats in the standard position (the small frunk adds only 15 litres, enough for charging cables). The #5 delivers 630 litres — nearly double the #1 — expanding to 1,530 litres with seats folded, plus a genuinely useful 72-litre frunk on RWD trims (reduced to 47 litres on AWD models because the front motor takes up space). On rear-seat legroom, the #5's extra 150 mm of wheelbase translates to noticeably more adult-rear-passenger comfort.

Towing tells a similar story: all Smart #5 trims tow 1,600 kg braked, whereas on the #1 you need at least the Pro+ (£36,960) to get towing at all. The Pure and Pro #1 variants cannot tow.

If the car spends its life in urban commuting with occasional family use, the #1 is the more sensible choice — it is easier to manoeuvre, easier to park, and lighter (1,780–1,900 kg vs 2,200–2,378 kg for the #5). If you regularly carry four adults and luggage, or tow, the #5 is the one to have.

What Chinese owners say about the two Smarts

Both cars are sold in China by the same joint venture, which makes for an unusually clean Chinese comparison: the same maker, the same dealer network and the same complaint platform on both sides. The catch is age. The #1 has been on sale for years and has the file to show for it, while the #5 is new enough that its rating rests on a handful of reviews. Read the complaint counts rather than the ratings if you want the more solid of the two signals.

Price and range

The Smart #1 range starts at £29,960 (Pure, 49 kWh LFP, 193 miles WLTP) and climbs to £44,960 (BRABUS AWD, 66 kWh NCM, 248 miles WLTP). The most popular trim is the Pro+ at £36,960, giving 260 miles WLTP from a 66 kWh NCM battery. The £39,660 Premium adds a heat pump and head-up display.

The Smart #5 range starts at £39,800 (Pro, 76 kWh LFP, 289 miles WLTP). For most buyers the step-up to the Pro+ at £43,800 is worth taking: it adds the 100 kWh NCM battery, 367 miles WLTP, and — critically — the 800V architecture with 400 kW DC charging. The Pro uses a 400V system capped at 150 kW. The £47,300 Premium adds an augmented-reality head-up display. The AWD trims (Pulse, Summit, BRABUS) sacrifice around 30 miles of WLTP range compared with the equivalent RWD Pro+/Premium.

One pricing detail has moved in the buyer's favour: from April 2026 the VED Expensive Car Supplement starts at £50,000 for an electric car, not £40,000. Only the £51,800 BRABUS #5 now attracts it, at £440 a year in years two through six — £2,200 over the five. The Pro and the Pro+ are taxed identically.

Charging and real-world range

The Smart #5's 800V architecture (on Pro+ and above) is its headline technical advantage. On a 350 kW public charger, the 100 kWh battery can go from 10–80% in approximately 18 minutes. That is class-leading for a family SUV: faster than a Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, or Polestar 2. In Electrifying.com's test the Brabus hit a 145 kW peak on a 150 kW unit. On the Pro (400V, 150 kW cap), 10–80% takes around 30 minutes — broadly the same as the Smart #1.

The trade-off is real-world efficiency. The #5's bluff, tall body and heavy kerb weight (2,200–2,378 kg) mean it uses more electricity per mile than its range figures suggest. Auto Express recorded 2.4 mi/kWh in a winter test — resulting in around 179 miles of real-world range from the 74.4 kWh usable Pro battery. Electrifying.com's Brabus test returned just over 3 mi/kWh. For context, the Tesla Model Y returned 3.6 mi/kWh in the same Auto Express winter test as the Pro.

The Smart #1 is meaningfully more efficient. What Car? recorded ~3.8 mi/kWh in mixed conditions with the Premium (equivalent to around 235 miles real-world range from the 62 kWh usable NCM pack). At 70 mph motorway speeds that dropped to 3.0 mi/kWh. It is not class-leading for efficiency, but it is substantially better than the #5.

Buyers who regularly use public rapid charging and cover long distances will benefit from the #5's 800V architecture. Buyers who mostly charge at home and use the car for commuting or shorter trips will find the #1's better efficiency translates into lower electricity bills over three years.

Warranty and safety

The warranty package is identical for both models. Smart UK Automotive Ltd (V4.2.0, 21 March 2025) offers: three years' vehicle warranty with unlimited mileage (extendable by one year through the Integrated Service Package); eight years or 125,000 miles on the high-voltage battery with a 70% State of Health floor; eight years or 100,000 miles on core EV components (motor, control units); and 12 years of unlimited-mileage corrosion protection.

Note on the Smart #5 specification page: it currently lists the battery warranty as 8 years/100,000 miles and core components as 8 years/125,000 miles — which is the reverse of the legally binding warranty terms document, and the reverse of what is stated on the #1 specification page. EV Database and the warranty terms document both confirm the correct figures: battery = 125,000 miles, core components = 100,000 miles. Buyers should rely on the warranty terms document rather than the #5 specification page.

On safety, the #1 and #5 both hold 5-star Euro NCAP ratings, though from different test years with different protocols. The #1 was tested in 2022 (adult 96%, child 89%, VRU 71%, safety assist 88%). The #5 was tested in 2025 under the tighter revised protocol (adult 88%, child 93%, VRU 84%, safety assist 92%). These scores are not directly comparable across protocols — both cars achieved the top five-star rating. No DVSA safety recalls have been issued for either model as of July 2026.

Company car and salary sacrifice

For company car drivers and salary-sacrifice users, both cars qualify for the beneficial EV BiK rates set by HMRC. In 2026/27 the rate for pure-electric vehicles is 4%; it rises to 5% in 2027/28 and 7% in 2028/29.

The Smart #1 Pro+ at £36,960 OTR (P11D approximately £36,905 from EV Database) gives a 2026/27 BiK value of approximately £1,476. A 20% income-tax payer pays around £295 per year; a 40% payer around £590 per year.

The Smart #5 Pro at £39,800 (P11D approximately £39,745) gives a 2026/27 BiK value of approximately £1,590 — roughly £115 more annually per year for the same taxpayer brackets.

On salary sacrifice, the VED Expensive Car Supplement now starts at £50,000 for an electric car, so only the £51,800 BRABUS #5 attracts it. Every other Smart #5 and every Smart #1, the BRABUS #1 included, escapes it.

For pure salary-sacrifice value, the Smart #1 Pro+ (£36,960, no ECS, 260 miles WLTP) is the strongest proposition in the Smart range — it undercuts the #5 Pro on P11D by roughly £2,840, which at 4% BiK saves a 40% taxpayer around £227 per year versus the #5 Pro.

Which should you buy?

The Smart #1 and Smart #5 do not genuinely compete with each other for the same buyer. They solve different problems.

**Buy the Smart #1 if:** Your priority is keeping costs manageable (from £29,960), you live or work in a city and value a compact footprint, you mostly charge at home overnight, and you do not regularly carry four adults with luggage or tow. The Pro+ (£36,960) is the most rounded choice — it unlocks the 66 kWh NCM battery, 22 kW AC charging, 260 miles WLTP and towing. Its real-world efficiency of ~3.7–3.8 mi/kWh keeps pence-per-mile costs lower than the #5.

**Buy the Smart #5 if:** You need a proper family SUV — think school run with sports kit, or regular four-up motorway runs. The 630-litre boot, extra wheelbase for rear passengers, and 1,600 kg towing across all trims make it the more practical all-rounder. If you regularly use the public rapid-charging network, the 800V/400 kW architecture on the Pro+ (£43,800) and above makes long-distance travel significantly less stressful than on the #1 — 18 minutes from 10–80% changes the calculus of a motorway stop. Accept that real-world efficiency will lag rivals: winter range of around 180–225 miles from the 76 kWh Pro is the honest number.

**For company car / salary sacrifice:** The #1 Pro+ (£36,960, no ECS) offers the best combination of low P11D and reasonable range in the Smart line-up. The #5 Pro (£39,800, narrowly under the ECS threshold) is the only #5 trim that avoids the additional road-tax hit.

**Both models share:** 5-star Euro NCAP, 8-year/125,000-mile battery warranty, 3-year vehicle warranty (shortest in class at this price tier for the #5), the same Geely-Mercedes backing, and OTA update capability. Neither has attracted DVSA recalls as of July 2026.
