Why the Chinese nameplate is not a UK specification
The ATTO 3 EVO is a substantial UK hardware revision of the original ATTO 3, with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and a 74.8 kWh battery. MG now sells two distinct UK cars under the MG4 name: the front-drive E3-platform Urban and the rear-drive MSP-platform MG4 EV. A China-market Yuan PLUS or MG4 owner score cannot establish the reliability of these delivered UK builds, and the older page’s complaint totals had no matched sales denominator. We have removed the implied brand-wide reliability winner. Ask each dealer for the exact model year, battery, software and warranty documents instead.

Price, range, charging and luggage
Checked 28 October 2026. The comparable long-range pair here is BYD ATTO 3 EVO Design and MY26 MG4 EV Premium Extended Range. Their manufacturer launch references are £38,990 and £32,995 OTR respectively; the MG figure is from its February introduction, while MG’s current brochure landing page now says the MG4 EV range starts from £30,495 without identifying the Extended Range price. Do not treat the £32,995 launch quote as today’s cash offer. MG claims 338 miles WLTP combined against BYD’s 316: a 22-mile or 7.0% catalogue advantage relative to BYD, calculated as 22 / 316. The launch-list gap is £5,995. Neither is a road-test or finance quote.

Do not mistake the MG4 EV Urban for Extended Range
MG4 EV Urban is a separate front-wheel-drive E3 car, with a 43 kWh Standard Range and a 54 kWh Long Range. MG publishes up to 258 miles WLTP for Urban Long Range and a 479-litre main boot plus a distinct 98-litre underfloor area. Its October-December finance page shows a £23,495 OTR Standard Range reference, with conditional finance and grant terms; that is not the 338-mile MG4 EV. The rear-wheel-drive MY26 MG4 EV Premium Extended Range has the 77 kWh pack, 338-mile claim and 388-litre boot. Decide whether your benchmark is minimum cash outlay or long-distance range before comparing either to BYD.
MG states more range; BYD states a shorter stop
Both headline ranges use WLTP combined, so 338 minus 316 gives the MG4 EV Extended Range a 22-mile stated lead. The BYD publishes a 220 kW DC peak and a 25-minute 10-80% charge; MG quotes 40 minutes for the 77 kWh Extended Range. MG’s separate 25-minute claim on its main model page applies to the 64 kWh Premium Long Range on a 150 kW charger, not the 338-mile Extended Range. Do not move the faster time between MG trims. Charger capability, starting battery temperature and charging curves still affect a real stop. Get a route-specific charging plan before paying for either claim.

Boot shape and cabin use matter beyond litres
BYD lists 490 litres in the rear and a separate 95-litre front compartment for ATTO 3 EVO. MG now lists 388 litres behind the rear seats of the refreshed MG4 EV; the older 363-litre number on this page was not the current model page figure. The published rear-boot difference is 102 litres, or 26.3% relative to MG: 102 / 388. Check actual luggage openings, rear child-seat fit and your parking space; a hatchback can still be easier to load in some settings. The BYD Design lists a heat pump, surround-view camera and Vehicle-to-Load. MG lists wireless phone mirroring, physical climate controls and heated seats on its current MG4 EV page. Verify trim details in writing.
Match each rating and warranty to the delivered car
Euro NCAP’s 2022 five-star BYD ATTO 3 crash test predates the extensively revised EVO; its 2025 Good assisted-driving result applies to a 2025 model-year ATTO 3, not automatically to EVO. Euro NCAP lists a 2022 five-star MG 4 Electric crash result and a September 2026 facelift review, while the separate MG4 EV Urban received its own 2025 five-star result. Check applicability to your exact VIN and do not rank unlike protocol years as if they were head-to-head tests. BYD’s UK EVO sheet gives six years/93,750 miles vehicle cover and eight years/155,350 miles battery cover. MG states seven years/80,000 miles for MG4 EV/Urban vehicle cover; request battery and exclusion terms for the ordered car.

Compare the written total, not a monthly headline
MG’s current range landing page and the earlier launch announcement use different price dates; BYD’s Design reference is likewise its March launch OTR. The displayed MG4 Urban finance example includes a manufacturer contribution, an MG-funded grant and conditions, so it cannot stand in for a cash price of the 338-mile Extended Range. Request same-date written OTR and PCP total-to-own figures, annual-mileage limits, insurance for the exact registration, tyre and service quotes. Neither this article nor unmatched China owner complaints can quantify the UK failure rate of these current builds. If you charge mostly at home, the MG’s smaller launch-list total may matter most; for frequent rapid charging, model actual stop time and tariffs.
Which should your household test first?
If your ceiling is close to £30,000, start with MG4 EV Urban or Premium Long Range and accept that neither is the 338-mile Extended Range. If you want the longest published WLTP claim in this pair, try the MY26 MG4 EV Premium Extended Range first. If you need an SUV stance, more quoted rear-boot room or frequent rapid charging, try the ATTO 3 EVO Design first. The warranty choice depends on years versus annual mileage: MG’s basic clock is longer, BYD’s stated basic mileage cap is higher. Take your own luggage and get a current quote before deciding.
