Used values favour Tesla by a wide margin: a flooded second-hand market means Model Ys can be found on Carwow from £17,885, whereas early Atto 3s start around £20,000 pre-EVO. On raw list price, BYD wins the headline number, but Tesla's residual values make the lifetime cost calculation more nuanced.
Across comparable entry-level trims the two cars are virtually neck-and-neck: the Atto 3 EVO Design scores 316 miles WLTP to the Tesla Model Y Standard's 314 miles. That statistical tie masks a wider story, however. BYD's AWD Excellence variant drops to 292 miles, whereas Tesla's Premium AWD stretches to 391 miles — a 99-mile advantage if you're willing to pay an extra £9,000+. Real-world figures are lower for both: the RAC achieved around 260 miles from the Atto 3 EVO in mixed conditions; Carwow recorded 242 miles from the Model Y Standard. Both cars are heavily dependent on large touchscreens and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, yet their philosophies differ sharply. The BYD EVO runs a native BYD OS on a 15.6-inch fixed touchscreen — the largest in the compact SUV class — with integrated Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not supported, a limitation for some buyers migrating from other brands. Insurance groups are a watch point: the original Atto 3 sat in group 38, and the EVO's substantially higher performance (313–449 PS) is likely to push it higher. Tesla's Model Y Standard typically sits in groups 40–44 depending on trim; neither is cheap to insure. Servicing costs are broadly comparable: BYD recommends annual service or every 15,000 miles for EVs, with no engine oil changes; Tesla similarly requires annual checks. BYD's lack of a dedicated charging network means public rapid charging is pay-per-use on third-party networks at rates typically between 45–80p/kWh versus Tesla Supercharger rates of approximately 50–60p/kWh.
BYD's warranty offering is genuinely class-leading: six years or 93,750 miles for the vehicle and eight years or 155,350 miles for the battery pack, with a contractually guaranteed State of Health (SOH) of at least 70% — that final clause matters, since BYD will remedy degradation below that threshold. Tesla offers a significantly shorter basic vehicle warranty of four years or 50,000 miles, though the battery is covered for eight years (100,000 miles for Standard; 120,000 miles for Long Range), with a 70% SOH guarantee matching BYD's. As of December 2025, BYD operates 125 franchised dealership sites across the UK — a network that has grown from zero to 125 outlets in under 30 months and is targeting further expansion in 2026. Tesla operates a smaller number of service centres supplemented by mobile service vans that can perform many repairs at the owner's home or workplace. For en-route reassurance, the Tesla Supercharger network (over 1,500 UK-accessible chargepoints) remains the most reliable rapid-charging infrastructure in Britain.
