BYD Dolphin vs MG S5 EV: Which Affordable Chinese EV Is Right for You?

Both cars come from Chinese state-owned enterprises with deep government backing, but the ownership stories diverge sharply from there.

BYD — Build Your Dreams — is the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer and the only car company on the planet that makes its own batteries, chips, motors and power electronics under one roof. It reported a gross profit margin of 23.1% in 2025, ahead of Tesla. The Dolphin is built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0, a purpose-built EV architecture that underpins everything from the Atto 3 to the Seal. Vertical integration means BYD controls quality across the entire supply chain.

MG is owned by SAIC Motor (SSE: 600104), China's largest state-owned automaker and a Fortune Global 500 company ranked #138 in 2025. SAIC posted net profit of RMB 10.1bn (+506%) in 2025 — a dramatic financial recovery. MG has been SAIC's primary export brand for decades and has built a formidable UK presence: 155–160 dealer sites, a 2024 UK registration record of 81,536 units (4.18% market share, 10th by brand). Neither company is going anywhere.

In short: both are Very Low survival risk. The question is not whether your warranty will be honoured — it is which car fits your life.

Both cars sell in China in fundamentally different forms to what reaches the UK — a fact with real implications for reading Chinese owner intelligence.

The BYD Dolphin sold in China is shorter (4,070–4,150 mm vs the UK's 4,290 mm export body), available in multiple battery sizes down to 30.72 kWh, and offered with a 70 kW base motor that the UK never receives. Chinese owners rate the Dolphin 4.50/5.0 on Autohome across 4,224 reviews, praising range, suspension comfort, and low running costs. But they flag a small boot (consistently the top gripe), wind noise, and interior smell on new cars. The 车质网 complaint rate of 31.4 per 10,000 sales is above average for the segment. A September 2024 recall of 96,714 Dolphins and Yuan Plus models for a CEPS controller fire risk is on the public record — BYD addressed it.

The MG S5 EV (sold in China as the MG ES5 / 名爵ES5) is an export-first model — only 5,265 units sold in China in its entire 2025 full year. Chinese owners score it 4.60/5.0 on Autohome (top in segment, though review volume is lower at 59). 车质网 complaints are very low — just two in its first two months. The primary China complaint is a closed infotainment ecosystem with no third-party apps. Crucially, the UK Long Range variant uses NMC chemistry (not LFP like China), enabling faster DC charging at the cost of slightly more careful state-of-charge management for long-term battery health.

For both models, the UK buyer receives a meaningfully different vehicle to what China gets — mostly to their benefit on safety, and sometimes to their detriment on smart technology.

The BYD Dolphin sold in the UK is around 220 mm longer than its Chinese sibling, with a re-engineered crash structure to meet Euro NCAP 2023 standards. The UK only receives the 60.4 kWh long-range battery and 150 kW motor — no entry-level short-range option. This is actually a positive: UK buyers get the premium configuration as standard. What the UK does not receive is BYD's God's Eye ADAS system (LiDAR-equipped, Level 2+ city NOA, available on Chinese variants from ¥99,800). The UK Dolphin's ADAS is competent Euro NCAP-spec, not the full Chinese smart-driving configuration.

The MG S5 EV is an export-first design — built with Europe in mind from the outset. The UK receives three trim levels including a Long Range NMC variant not available in China at all. The UK's 7yr/80,000 mile vehicle warranty is shorter than China's optional lifetime battery warranty (top trim only), but the 8yr/100,000 mile battery warranty is strong for the price. One notable gap: the UK does not receive the 525max 智驾版 (ADAS+ trim) available in China — UK buyers get MG PILOT at Trophy level, without the Level 2+ city-NOA available to Chinese buyers.

This is where the two cars diverge most sharply — and where the MG S5 EV's multi-trim strategy becomes either an asset or a complexity, depending on what you need.

**Pricing:** The BYD Dolphin offers one choice: the 60.4 kWh Comfort at £30,230, or the Design trim at £31,730. Simple. The MG S5 EV spans a wider range: SE Standard Range (47 kWh LFP, 211 miles) at £28,995; SE Long Range (64 kWh NMC, 298 miles) at £31,495; Trophy Long Range at £33,995. **Range:** At the comparable LR price point, the MG S5 EV Long Range wins outright: 298 miles vs the Dolphin's 265. The MG Standard Range at 211 miles is notably less than the Dolphin's 265 for essentially the same entry price — and the MG SR lacks battery preconditioning.

**Charging:** The Dolphin charges at 100 kW peak (BYD UK official; Carwow measured 110 kW). The MG S5 EV Long Range tops out at 139 kW — genuinely quick for the price, with 10–80% in roughly 24–28 minutes. Both support 11 kW AC.

**Safety:** The MG's 5-star Euro NCAP is more recent (May 2025) and scored marginally higher on adult occupants (90% vs 89%). Both are solid. The MG recency is a mild advantage.

**Warranty:** MG wins on vehicle coverage (7yr vs 6yr); BYD wins on battery mileage limit (125,000 vs 100,000 miles). Both cover 8 years on the battery.

**V2L:** Both offer 3.3 kW V2L standard. The MG S5 EV SE LR and Trophy LR upgrade to 6.6 kW — the only car here with double-rate bidirectional charging.

**Boot:** MG S5 EV wins clearly: 436 litres vs the Dolphin's 345 — a near 26% difference that matters for families and longer trips.

**Running costs:** BiK 4% for both in 2026/27. VED zero in year one for both.

**Buy the BYD Dolphin if** you want the simplest possible buying decision — one price, one battery size, one proven EV platform from the world's most vertically integrated car company. The Dolphin's BYD Blade Battery chemistry is genuinely pioneering: it passed the nail-penetration test without catching fire, it supports 100% regular charging without degradation concerns, and it carries one of the strongest battery warranty mileage limits in the segment (125,000 miles). BYD's 125+ UK dealer network is now one of the most accessible Chinese-brand networks in the country. The Dolphin's main weaknesses are honest ones: a 345-litre boot (noticeably smaller than rivals), DC charging that tops out at 100 kW while competitors go to 120–139 kW, and — per the What Car? Driver Power 2025 survey — BYD ranked 30th out of 31 brands in owner satisfaction, with after-sales service highlighted as the weak link.

**Buy the MG S5 EV Long Range if** you are a higher-mileage driver, a fleet buyer, or a company-car driver who values stronger warranty coverage and a denser dealer network (160 sites vs 125). The 298-mile WLTP range, 139 kW DC charging, 6.6 kW V2L, and 436-litre boot make the £31,495 SE LR the most well-rounded car in this comparison. SAIC's financial recovery (+506% net profit in 2025) and MG's record UK registrations mean survival risk is near-zero.

**Avoid the MG S5 EV Standard Range** if your patterns include long-distance runs: 211 miles WLTP with no heat pump and no battery preconditioning means cold-weather performance will disappoint. The Standard Range is only compelling if you charge primarily at home and can exploit the £28,995 entry price.

**The one thing to verify before signing either:** MG's EV Grant (£1,500 off, to 30 September 2026 per MG UK) and BYD's promotional pricing should both be confirmed directly with the dealer the week you purchase — Chinese brands have adjusted incentives without notice before.
