MG4 Urban Comfort Long Range vs CUPRA Born V1 58kWh: UK price and charging

A selected MG configuration, a conditional CUPRA grant headline and a charging footnote for a different battery: compare the UK cars before ordering.

The verdict

Start with the MG4 Urban Comfort Long Range if purchase budget and carrying awkward everyday luggage lead your decision. Test the Born V1 58kWh if its longer published WLTP range and heated front seats justify the higher written quotation. First straighten out the price basis: the MG configurator showed £25,995 in Arctic White, while CUPRA lists £35,995 OTR before its stated grant deduction. Neither a finance saving nor a real-world range advantage has been measured here.

Buy the MG4 Urban Comfort Long Range if

You want the lower displayed configuration price and can use its underfloor storage; confirm the exact Long Range charging specification.

Buy the CUPRA Born V1 58kWh if

You value the V1 equipment and published range enough to request a higher quote, with any grant eligibility confirmed separately.

The Urban and the new Born are the cars to request

These are two UK-catalogue electric hatchbacks, but the names need care. MG sells an Urban alongside the separate MG4 EV; a quotation, road test or charging figure for the latter does not automatically describe the Urban. We selected Comfort Long Range and the displayed 53.9kWh powertrain in MG’s live configurator. For CUPRA, the reference is the new Born V1 with the 58kWh battery and 190PS designation in its UK price list. The older 59kWh e-Boost and the current 79kWh versions are different specifications. Both brands provide UK shopping or test-drive routes. Those pages establish a local offer, not a guaranteed delivery date, unregistered stock allocation or acceptance of your order.

Separate the displayed configuration from the grant headline

Record the configuration before comparing the bottom line. MG’s live selection showed £25,995 with Arctic White and Comfort Long Range displayed; this is the selected online configuration, not a dealer-confirmed all-in cash offer. CUPRA’s May 2026 UK list separates a £35,995 recommended OTR figure from £34,495 with the stated Electric Car Grant deducted. The latter requires the relevant eligibility and order conditions; it is not an unconditional manufacturer price cut for everyone. Do not subtract the two website headlines and call the answer a saving. Ask both retailers to itemise colour, delivery and registration charges, applicable support, order date and the final cash amount before comparing finance interest or monthly payments.

Open the lower compartment before deciding what the litres mean

The MG’s headline luggage figure includes a lower storage compartment. That space can be useful for cables and small bags, but a pram or rigid suitcase must fit through the opening and lie where you can actually reach it. CUPRA publishes its own boot capacity without establishing an identical measurement exercise between these two cars. We therefore leave the boot score tied rather than declaring a measured space winner from the larger number. Bring the same pram, travel cases and child seat to both appointments. Check whether the parcel shelf can stay fitted, whether accessing the lower floor means unloading everything, and whether rear passengers retain the legroom they need with the front seats set for your drivers.

Use the right battery column and keep a winter reserve

For a household choosing one electric car, published range is a starting point for route planning. MG describes its 53.9kWh battery family as offering up to 258 miles WLTP. The selected Born V1 58kWh line states up to 300 miles. Neither number is a forecast for a cold motorway journey with passengers, luggage and heating. Battery labels also need a definition: CUPRA identifies net and gross capacity separately, while we have not established that MG’s displayed number uses the same basis. Do not calculate a usable-capacity advantage by subtracting the badges. Map the longest regular trip with a reserve, choose workable stops and then decide whether paying more for the Born’s published range serves that trip.

The MG charging footnote names a different battery version

MG’s model page presents a 28-minute charging headline, but its accompanying qualification assigns that 10-80% time to Comfort Standard Range using a 150kW charger under specified conditions. This comparison selects Comfort Long Range. We do not silently transfer the Standard Range promise to it. Ask the retailer for the dated charging specification of the actual Long Range vehicle. CUPRA’s 58kWh battery table lists a 26-minute 10-80% session at 105kW; that is a manufacturer test condition rather than a charging stop we have reproduced. Queueing, battery temperature, starting charge and power sharing can change a journey. Confirm the supplied cable, socket and your regular home or public charging arrangement for each quoted car.

Try the equipment included in these trims

Do the test drive in the equipment level you intend to buy. MG’s model text marks heated seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging and a surround-view camera as Premium Long Range features, so they should not be assumed present on this Comfort Long Range selection. The Born V1 equipment list includes heated front seats and a rear-view camera; a top-view camera shown elsewhere belongs to a different specification. Sit in each car after pairing your own phone, then find the demister, temperature control, reversing view and driver display without assistance. A larger screen does not establish easier operation. If a particular feature settles the decision, put it on the written order rather than relying on a promotional photograph.

Read the battery promise separately from the vehicle headline

MG’s current UK warranty page presents a seven-year factory-warranty headline and links the detailed conditions. We could not retrieve that linked PDF in this check, so its mileage cap and battery-capacity terms remain unconfirmed here. CUPRA’s live UK page states five years and up to 90,000 miles for the vehicle. Its price-list warranty text separately describes battery cover for eight years or up to 100,000 miles, with a conditional degradation remedy below 70% measured energy content. These are different coverages, not a guarantee that every loss of range or wear item is repaired free. Obtain the current warranty booklet for the supplied vehicle and ask about servicing, exclusions, diagnosis and the workshop that would handle a claim.

Check assistance behaviour without inventing a crash-test ranking

Use the road test to check what the car asks of the driver. Try a normal parking manoeuvre, read the reversing display and learn how assistance settings are recalled, with the retailer explaining their limits. We do not award a safety winner by copying a range-wide star headline onto an unchecked version or by counting equipment names. If a crash-test result matters to your decision, verify the assessment date, tested vehicle and applicability to the ordered specification before relying on it. Likewise, published motor output cannot establish braking distance, ride comfort or wet-road behaviour. Drive both over a route you know, including a rough surface and a safe joining manoeuvre, before paying extra for a specification sheet.

China-side evidence

Keep overseas names and owner stories attached to their own cars

The Urban must also be kept separate from the older MG4 when researching owner experiences. A search result with a familiar badge can describe a different platform, battery, software release or sales market. This comparison has not established a representative Chinese owner sample, a comparable complaint rate or a conversion of an overseas range figure into UK use. The Born’s UK specification and warranty are not evidence of a China-market ownership record either. We use the locally offered versions documented above and leave those overseas outcomes unresolved. A specific report can still be useful as a question to take to the retailer, but it should not become a reliability verdict or a numerical score without a matched vehicle and sample.

Where included, owner reports and complaints are individual accounts, not representative surveys; recalls apply only to the vehicles and markets stated in each notice. Check the source, market and date of each claim.

Leave with two written quotations and one charging plan

Sources were checked on 23 October 2026, UK time. This is a comparison of current UK manufacturer pages and the dated CUPRA UK price list, not a road test, an insurance quotation or a calculation of total ownership cost. The practical recommendation is conditional: favour the MG when the lower quoted purchase cost and accessible storage solve your needs; retain the Born when its documented equipment and published range are worth the extra amount in your actual offer. Both still need a viable charging routine. Before committing, collect the exact model-year specification, availability, price basis, grant or manufacturer-support conditions, cable provision and warranty booklet. Check insurance for the precise registration or derivative, rather than assuming the policy cost from another MG4 or Born.

Questions before ordering either electric hatchback

Is the MG4 Urban the same car as the MG4 EV?
No. MG markets the Urban alongside the separate MG4 EV. This page selects Urban Comfort Long Range with the displayed 53.9kWh powertrain; another MG4’s specification should not be substituted.
Is the Born V1 £34,495 without conditions?
CUPRA’s dated UK list shows £35,995 OTR before the stated £1,500 Electric Car Grant deduction and £34,495 after it. Confirm eligibility and the applicable order terms with the retailer.
Can the selected MG Long Range charge in the advertised 28 minutes?
The model-page footnote assigns that 10-80% time to Comfort Standard Range. We have not verified the same promise for Comfort Long Range, so ask for its dated charging specification.
Do the boot figures prove the MG holds more family luggage?
MG’s up-to-577-litre figure includes 98 litres under the floor; CUPRA declares 385 litres. Without an identical measurement and a fit check with your luggage, those figures do not prove usable capacity for your household.
Which warranty lasts longer?
MG advertises a seven-year factory headline, but the linked detailed terms could not be retrieved here. CUPRA states five years/up to 90,000 miles for the vehicle and separate conditional battery cover. Obtain both current booklets before comparing protection.
